A confident striker and a scared defender

965

John Guidetti has put himself out there by letting us know he’ll score a hat-trick in next month’s League Cup semi-final.  I’m not normally an advocate of showing confidence, if not contempt, for opponents prior to a game, but Guidetti’s comments come against a rich canvas.

The player is in a rut and will be feeling the weight of disappointment with each passing chance.  He is a goal-scorer, he’ll score again, but he needs to find the spark to fire-up the second part of his season.

You will remember Kenny Miller ran his guts out in his early months as a Celtic player but it was not until a game against oldco Rangers in September that his landmark first Celtic goal arrived.  Kris Commons has been a scoring sensation throughout his time at the club apart from his second season, when he took until April before scoring, a delightful chip over the oldco keeper.

Ahead of both of those games I knew it was all going to come together for Miller and Commons.  John Guidetti has set himself a target.  He will probably score before that game but he knows how important it is to perform at Hampden.  He is good enough to deliver on this one, don’t bet against him.

Contrast John’s comments to those last week from newco defender, Steven Smith, who said, “The fans will probably be dreading [the Celtic game]because in the big games this season, we haven’t done well. Everybody has got their opinions and are entitled to them.

“But with the results we have been having and the way we have been playing, I don’t think we can think about it too much.”

You will be hard pushed to find a clearer example of the language of failure: “dreading”, “haven’t done well” and “the way we’ve been playing”.  You normally need to work a bit to find a player’s insecurities.  It’s good of John Guidetti to mark his card on what to expect. Give me a confident striker over a scared defender any day.

The Second Annual Celtic Supporter’s Féile is on the weekend of Friday 30 January 30 – Sunday 1 February in Philadelphia.  The events include live music each day, the US premier of The Asterisk Years, with a Q&A with Paul Larkin and Graham Wilson of Beyond the Waves podcast, as well as live coverage of our first ever meeting with newco Rangers in the League Cup semi-final.

You can find more information, including how to book, here.

God bless Kano, and all other CQNers we’ve lost now.

All together in Heaven, singing this beautiful song about Glasgow, I reckon.

But for me, I knew George personally, and he’s a great loss to Glasgow, and this song will always stick in my tobacco ridden over-proud heart.

HH to all. ( I’ll probably start posting endless Matt McGinn, Shane McGowan and other stuff but wear with me!)

But I don’t think there’s any song will hit me like this now.

Thoroughly enjoyed hearing the George Donaldson tracks.

I fancy myself as a fountain of musical knowledge but had never heard of him until now. I have already checked the availability of his 2 CD’s. Very hard to get at a a reasonable price although available on download. Still rather have a hard copy. Old fashioned that way.

Thanks again for educating me. One of the reasons why I enjoy CQN. It is an education.

  5. WilliamKentigern67,

    Thank you.

George was a stalwart of the Glasgow pub scene, but very very tragically passed away in 2014 while discovering “humble” fame in the States, leaving behind a beautiful young family.

I can assure you his words on Glasgow are geniune, and his love of people and his time for them are still things we discuss emotionally.

Am delighted to hear your words, and if you want to hear more, let me know and I’ll get some CDs to you.

He had many closer friends than me, but I would still have done anything for him.

  8. WilliamKentigern67/ proudbhoy,

One of the best things I think I heard George do was his version of the Old Man. So much that I got the DVD and gifted it to the old boy for his birthday. I caught him watching it a week later and he confessed he’d been watching it all week.

Sadly, the production crew and Phil C have removed all content from online, they did so a few years ago.

Sad, as it is the best advert for Phil Coulter’s CelticThunder imo, but I’m obviously missing where the money making point is.

George didn’t hesitate in doing his own thing outside of CT and PC’s control, hence beautful covers such as his version of the Parting Glass, and his own’s songs, such as Glasgow. I think he wanted all working with him on CT to benefit more, but regardless, he just did what he always did best – sing, play, talk to people.

  15. THE SEASON

    ===========

Let’s not be in any doubt, the run in to the end of this season, a season which has provided a much higher level of competition than anyone might have expected, will be a tough one for us.

Between now and 11th April (split) we have a minimum of 15 matches, depending on cup and EL results it could be more.

Of the 15 matches, 4 are in cup competitions and only one is at home – the other three being at Hampden, Dundee and Milan.

Of the 15 matches, 11 are in the SPFL, with 5 at home and 6 away.

It is conceivable that if we are successful in the cup and EL competitions, we could be looking at 20 matches in a thirteen week period with only SEVEN being played at Celtic Park.

This is a tall order – will this schedule and challenge bring out the best – talk about a ‘baptism of fire’ for Ronny !!!!!

Robert Sarver BLASTS Rangers board for bid rejection

ROBERT SARVER has blasted the Rangers board after ending his bid to bankroll the club.

Robert Sarver BLASTS Rangers board for bid rejection..

ROBERT SARVER has blasted the Rangers board after ending his bid to bankroll the club

Robert Sarver wished the club well but was left disappointed by the decision

The American financier’s second offer to buy the stricken outfit was kicked out by Ibrox chiefs.

Sarver, owner of the Phoenix Suns basketball franchise, had tabled £20million for a controlling stake in the Championship club.

The Arizona-based banker, right, would then have spent another £16m to buy out the other shareholders before investing in the club’s future.

But the board rejected the plan after deciding it would not have achieved the necessary 75 per cent shareholder approval.

Rangers directors, however, did not come up with a counter proposal.

Sarver has now made it clear his interest is dead. And he questioned the club’s logic in selling Lewis Macleod to Brentford 24 hours after he made it clear young talent staying was a condition of a deal.

The 54-year-old said: “My first offer was to inject capital into the company on a long-term basis through a share issue. That was £18m that was to go into the club.

“But also, as a part of the conditions for my first offer, I had in it that they couldn’t sell any players.

“Then, the day after I submitted the offer, they sold one of the more promising young players, so that deal was kind of crushed.

I hope for the sake of the club and the fans, who have been very warm and supportive towards me, that it works out

    Robert Sarver

“My second offer that I came back with tried to give them more flexibility.

“I agreed to loan £6.5m to help with the short-term cash-flow issues and then give the board discretion to sell me between £16m and £20m of equity as they saw fit so they could minimise the dilution if they wanted.

“Or they could sell me more shares and put more money in the club. But regardless, my plan was to permanently capitalise the club over the next two to three years so it had the best chances to be successful in getting back to being one of the top two teams in the Scottish league.

“I’d have been good for Rangers. I’d have got them back on a firmer financial footing. As a result of the board’s continued failure to provide a counter offer or engage in any meaningful negotiations, I do not now intend to make an offer for Rangers.

“Clearly the current directors have a different path they want to go down.

“I hope for the sake of the club and the fans, who have been very warm and supportive towards me, that it works out.

“I wish the club and fans the best of luck. If they want my support in the future then they only have to ask.”

Unless the board accept another crisis loan from 8.92 per cent stakeholder and commercial partner Mike Ashley, the only viable option now is to strike a deal with the consortium of Douglas Park, above, George Taylor and George Letham.
