With three weeks until the scheduled kick off of season 2020-21 and 25 days until Uefa’s deadline on submitting champions for season 2019-20, the Scottish Government will today permit football to be played behind closed doors.
An industry was born this spring for conspiracy theorists who insist Scottish football would have been able to complete last season’s league programme, with blame variously laid at the feet of the SPFL or Peter Lawwell. The former were told in no uncertain terms by the Government that the game would not resume as early as it has across Europe. The latter, with his club sailing towards nine-in-a-row, wanted the season finished on the pitch.
Facts never matter to conspiracy theorists, they are too much trouble. Lazy thinking will allow them to reminisce about what happened this spring for decades to come.
Uefa’s ruling yesterday that the first three qualification rounds for next season’s Champions and Europa Leagues is welcome. Celtic will be seeded for each of these rounds, so given an even chance, we would hope to progress. The biggest obstacle on this front is playing away in front of a partisan crowd – and let’s remember, Scottish clubs have waited longer than virtually everyone else for permission to even cross the white line.

Hi Bhoys
For everyone posting about FREE and PAUL ROGERS yesterday and even those who weren’t.
*Saw Paul fronting Queen several years ago at the ACC as it was called then, sung his ain stuff tae although for Bohemian Rhapsody Freddie’s voice overs were used for part of it.
Mens Shed right enough – where is everybody?
When you think of how good the weather was in April and May, and the football we were producing February and March, there is every chance we would have won the league by around twenty points.
And continued the Brendan-Neil Cup run…..
To which conspiracy theory does our host speak?
Great to read on the previous thread a mention of Dunky Mackay.
An unsung hero and club captain who left just before the glory years.
SOT? Has he been on?
John McGinn, brought up in a Celtic supporting family, gets the chance to sign for Celtic and earn approx £600K a year. English Premiership Villa offer him double that. £1.2M a year. It would have been a tough call for the boy no doubt about that, but if he was a real Celtic supporter he would have come to us.

Like you GARCIA LORCA I tend to lurk now, looks as if you’re a wee bit older than me as my first games were in the early 50s sitting on the wee wall in front of the Jungle.
My memories then are the Juggler, Wee Barra, Big Hooky, Charles Patrick, one of the silkiest players in my lifetime wee Bertie, no ten thirty I hasten tae add, and a wee rid heided dynamo.
Fully concur with your assertion of Paddy Crerand, my 2nd favourite hero after the above noted rid heided dynamo aka Bobby Evans.
I was at Bobby Murdoch’s debut where he scored the opener and also the midweek greens v whites game where he also starred. He did seem to lose his way a bit prior to the arrival of Jock and was thinking of moving to Oz, but it should be noted that contrary tae public opinion it was oul Jimmy that first moved him tae right half, it just didnae work out possibly as a result of not having the right kind of partner in the midfield at the time, wee ten thirty would soon solve that dilemma.
Incidentally if was Jimmy that first tried the Bear out on the left wing, who would ever forget his amazing performance against deidco on the 33rd anniversary of the tragic loss of John Thomson to the club.
Several years ago I had the pleasure of meeting my 2nd hero, I said at the time if he hudnae have left we would never have heard of Bobby, his reply, quite stunned at my assertion, was “don’t be daft son, if I hadn’t left you widnae have heard of me, Bobby was a far better player than I was”. The humility of the mhan was stunning.
When I was in 3rd year at high school one of the teachers, whose son would go on tae play professional, was a regular home and away on the old Vale of Leven CSC bus and this was during the “years in the wilderness”.
He was asked at the time who was the worst player at Parkheid, his response was Charlie. Knowing him as he stayed out in the Bonnie Banks he would have been eating his words 2 years later as the talents of Charlie, playing on the right wing, would help us gain our first trophy in 7 years, 6 months and 5 days.
We older Tims love tae reminisce on that corner the SMSM the next day would call “Billy’s Bumper”, that gave us the trophy however let’s not lose sight of his exocet that spun up off the bar for a crafty wee ten thirty tae stand on the goal line waiting tae nod it home, if a par touches him it’s a penalty.
Also, and I’ve said it on here before, while top goal scorer Kenny Wilson’s goals (38 that season) had dried up and his namesake the original dive bomber davie had gone intae hiding it was Charlie who literally carried Dumbarton back intae the First Division for the first time in 50 year. 6 goals in the last 4 games, no bad for a play maker midfielder, incidentally, one of the other stars that season was the son of the schoolteacher I just mentioned.
Charlie still is a much loved hero in Dumbarton and had a shop up Bellsmyre, I asked him on this site why he gave it up and his response was as much as he loved it and the people being a wee grocery shop with late hours the commute was getting too much.
Here’s a wee bit of useless trivia he was along with an acquaintance of mine a member of the Dumbarton Operatic Society, a classy gentleman all round.
As for Alex aka Alice Byrne, as you say a lovely player who like John Higgins and later on another of my hero’s Frank Brogan was targeted by the thugs in the game, especially a wee barrel chested former brickie that our Iron Mhan dumped on the running track after he crippled young John in one game.
One of the finest goals I ever saw was Alex’s pile driver against the Hi Hi in a replay of the SC; it was played at the national stadium due tae safety concerns at Cathkin and the expected large crowd, in a 4-0 victory.
He would also score in the semi against the Buddies in a rather forgotten game that in true Celtic fashion of the time we once again never showed up for.
Clyde SSB , first caller , Sevco screwball wants the first leg of the Leverkusen tie scrapped then reverting to a one off matching starting at 0-0 .

Thanks for your post. I was born in the Gorbals in 1947 and grew up watching Charlie Tully, Bertie Peacock. Jock Stein , Bobby Evans and many other great Celtic men.
Paddy Crerand was a close by neighbour on Crown Street . I still recall the anguish the morning my Mum gave me the news of his move to Manchester United. Dalglish going was similar but Paddy was a Celtic man to the core. He even came with his then and future wife on our Sarsfield Celtic Supporters summer bus run to Burntisland all the way from the Gorbals.
Today I mostly live in London but still hold 2 season tickets and can look back and consider myself lucky to have been at the 7-1 game, Lisbon. Milan and Seville plus a host of other truly memorable occasions.
I suspect if we met we might have a very long conversation:

Garcia Lorca,
The only 2 on that list that I have no recollection of are Walsh and Higgins (one of my Dad’s favourite players).
My early days were spent on the wee wall at the back of the Jungle, fairly near the “toilet”. I remember when my Dad would life me down at the end wondering why the ground was so wet!
life=lift
Gacrcia Loro and Tontime, I love it when you guys tell your stories, so vivid, so clear even over the years, outstanding contributors you both are.
I really like it when there is historical context added in, the things I have learned on here about our players and their ordinary lifes, quite humbling.
Keep it lit.
Ajer off to AC Milan?
First bid rejected. We want €30m.
Nonsense? Who knows. It’s a rumour.
Melbourne Mick: Congratulations to you and your better half. 52 years – and hopefully there’ll be plenty more.
Gosh, the SMSM seems to have become obsessed about Celtic’s ability to ‘adapt’ and not ‘suffer’ in a no fan environment.
Wishful thinking, me thinks.
‘Empty stands disadvantage to Celtic and Rangers’.
Note it’s Celtic before ‘Rangers’ when the headline is negative😉
Remember how we are taught to read. We look at things from top to bottom and left to right. Our brains process images seeing the foreground, then background.
Now go and look at all the ‘old firm’ pictures on the BBC website 😉

Do you remember Jim Conway?
*It was regarded as a coup when we signed him and was our youngest player at one time, however, like Bobby Carroll another highly regarded junior he was there at there wrong time. He went on to become Norwich’s first 100 pound a week player. Interestingly Jock tried tae sign him for Dunfermline based on his reserve team appearances and scoring 4 against deidco when he was coach.
In his 5 years with us he only played 43 games scoring 13 goals. I did hear many years ago that we sent a scout tae look at Gerry and Joe Baker and he came back with Jim.
Pretty much sums up a grim period.
OK for all those who do not translate GOBBLE TE GOOK a hun player called BOBBY SHEARER clugged JOHN HIGGINS and the injury was so bad he retired early. What his barrel chest and occupation has got to do with anything is beyond me.

*I don’t cry but did shed tears when my da told me we had sold Bobby Evans, he said we had a younger player coming through who would be better than him, which was Billy. He wasn’t a seer though just trying tae console his wee bhoy.
When Paddy left I cried again, but in anger, I was at his final game; sneaked up on the pretense I was visiting a school pal. My da was in the kitchen with my uncle, my mother’s oldest brother, 7 years older than him.
He took a look at my disappointed face and said “you were at that game”, as soon as I said aye I expected a belt in the ear as I was forbidden tae go tae hun games, he wouldnae take me himself, “too busy watching myself” he would say.
Just at that my uncle said “you going tomorrow”, we were scheduled for a home game against the bully wee, I was just a wee paper bhoy then and told him I would love tae but had no money.
He pulled some cash out of his pocket, “here’s yer fare up and money in” he said “we need supporters like you”. By this time my da had calmed down and gave me a hug.
Next day I woke up to find the country was covered in a blanket of snow and would be like that for a couple of months, 24 hours too late for us.
I suspect if we met we might have a very long conversation:
*I have no doubt there.

Hi Big Mhan
Your brother was obviously a man of taste. Was lucky enough to see him in The Barrowland maybe late 90’s or early 2000’s. He has a fantastic voice. Sorry to say I know nothing of any envelope as I was late to the party in buying albums. I always say only 3 men had a god given right to sing rock music Paul Rogers, Robert Plant and Roger Daltrey.
