A decade on from Basel

1055

Ten years ago this morning we were celebrating what appeared to be the importance of a Momo Sylla goal two minutes from time to give Celtic a 3-1 first leg lead against FC Basel in the Champions League play-off round.

The previous season Celtic defeated a formidable sounding Ajax team at the same stage so when they were drawn against the Swiss team confidence was high.  Two weeks later our record of poor results away from home in Europe’s top competition was further cemented as Basel gained an away goal advantage.

That failure worked out well for Martin O’Neill’s team who dropped to the Uefa Cup and progressed all the way to the Seville final but Neil Lennon will be aware that Helsingborgs carry no less a reputational threat to Celtic than Basel did a decade ago.  Basel were not a better team than Celtic but a slow start to both games, and a missed penalty, cost us entry to the Champions League.  We will need to be better prepared next week.

Paul Larkin’s latest book, Albert, Dougie and Win, is available to purchase from Lulu.  The three-in-one book covers the days and events surrounding Celtic’s 1986 league win in From Albert, with Love, the SFA’s 2010 challenges in Dougie, Dougie, and the men who stopped 10 in Wim’s Tims.  Fascinating stories written by one of the very best Celtic authors.

Remember to give me a shout if you would like to write an article for CQN Magazine, articles@cqnmagazine.co.uk.

I would say she was an evil cow, who started a war with Argentina which resulted in thousands being maimed and killed just to hang on to power and win an election.

She is right up there with Hitler and Stalin.

Your Basel story has sparked many memories of receiving Celtic news in unusual circumstances and in unusual places.

My Dad got into a spot of bother before El Alemein using the comms network to check out a Celtic result.

My own are a whole lot less prosaic but on that run to Seville I happened to be hosting a very early breakfast meeting in Sydney, Australia when a text buzzed on my phone – from the archivist, Gordon- to announce that Henrik ( KoK ) had put the Celts one up at Blackburn. I have had many distant links such as this although obviously technology has changed the dramatic circumstances. I recall phoning Parkhead to try and get the Vojvodina home game result. Engaged . I called the Tavern bar in the Gorbals to be met with loud singing. I could barely hear the owner over the din – but I knew we were in the semis.

    Wonderful memories- but torture too!

  4. Have to disagree regards Simpson,he was fergsuons attack dog and we were just very lucky that our players particularly Charlie Nic did not suffer similar injuries. He was a thug programmed by ferguson no sympathy from this Tim.

He was not the only one in that team just the most obvious, well maybe apart from Rougvie.

  5. If I am not mistaken the Basel team that knocked us out in the qualifiers managed to progress through the CL group stages and were not a bad outfit with the Murat and Hakin Yakin being the two stand out players. Saying that we could and should have beat them and I remember big Sutty nearly scored at the end over there to put us through.

  6. Its always something I wanted to ask on CQN

Is there any CQNers who went to St Joes Dumfries during the early to mid seventies. I was there for 3 years and can honestly say I was a model pupil for all the wrong reasons !

    ……………….

Most clubs had their own “attack dog” as you put it back then. For the huns to cry about Simpson while employing Souness, Butcher, Roberts, Dawson, Stevens (gregor), Forsyth, Greig, Hurlock, Jardine, McCulloch etc etc is just laughable

Basel were a decent team. They qualified out of their group after beating us. Similarly for Artmedia. Braga got to the Uefa Cup final after putting us out.

These teams must draw a lot of confidence from eliminating us.

If Helsingborg do so, I don’t think they’ll go much further, though.

Apparently it is having cash flow problems which have meant that clubs have yet to receive funds due from broadcasting/advertising etc.

Could it go into administration soon?

The bould b`hoys – Philvis, and Kojo’s doppleganger are the only ones on here who held Thatcher in any high regard.

I’m sure there are more Thatcher fans on CQN than just me and Kojo.

    We’re in the minority though.

However, I don’t think we Thatcherite Celts are too troubled by semi-literate bams who can barely spell “fascist”, and then cry about it when someone disagrees with them. (thumbsup)

  14. I remember that game well, was my first experience of the Champions League at Celtic Park as a fresh faced 14 year old! Was in the posh Jock Stein stand seats (for the first and to this day only time!) no less so got a perfect view of Momo’s volley!

10 years already though? That makes me feel old!

“He was not the only one in that team just the most obvious, well maybe apart from Rougvie.”

The point was about the hypocrisy. Had Simpson done a player from any other team he would have finished his career at Aberdeen without comment.

But he clattered a Hun from a team full of dirt bassas – Souness alone committed about five of those challenges in his career and he wasn’t hounded out of Scottish football.

From that point of view I have always felt Simpson got a raw deal – and judging by last night’s turnout so do the Aberdeen fans.

  16. On Neil Simpson, while I don’t believe he should be pilloried for the rest of his life based on that one tackle, I do think its a bit distasteful for (non Aberdeen) fans to be paying tribute to him.

In the same way that I would find it distasteful to read a hun on a hun blog praising that guy Ganea who effectively finished John Kennedy’s playing career.

I’m sure Simpson is due his tribute from Aberdeen fans based on what he did for their club.

I would agree with StMichaelsBhoy2 that Neale Cooper was the real attack dog in that Aberdeen side.

I see this is being disputed by the likes of Dundee Utd and Hearts,so why doesn’t someone ask him to detail the payments?

If you’re going to blame one of the bodies that govern Scottish football for not paying your dues, you should at least know which one deals with the money from the Scottish Cup and it ain’t the SPL, it is an SFA tournament.

Maybe those razor shapr PR men who rabble roused the worst elements in Scottish society to get them to buy season tickets because of Bigotry (HA) and the conspiracy against Rangers/Charlie Chalk should do some proper research into their subject matter before coming out with tripe like that.

The only way the SPL could be paying for that is if the TV money from last season they didn’t get was used to pay off their Scottish debts. We all know this amount is greater than the 800K they are supposed to get for finishing second so where is the rest of it coming from?

Hearts alone should be getting that amount of money, leaving the rest to wait for the end of the roll up roll up circus of (genuine) bigotry making its way across the lower leagues and Ramsdens cup to get them the cash to pay Celtic, Dundee United and Dunfermline – or are they paying in installments?

Bet the paper shop are pure beelin along with the rest of the folk who got shafted because they were too big to pay PAYE and TAX (and that’s only for one year).

They make decent people want to puke.

Is it any wonder that the fans of other clubs to a man and his dog said no to newco?

    Yet they’ve been punished enough.

    Only in Scotland.

    Rant over.
