A goal down but the Celtic story was going to be told

290

A goal down in the second half, having not made a chance worthy of the name.  But the Celtic story was going to be told.  Hearts pushed, kicked and wasted every possible second of the opening 82 minutes of the Scottish Cup Final.  Their game plan worked, for 10 minutes the outcome looked in doubt, until Odsonne Edouard out-witted Heats ‘keeper, Zlamal.  Instead of shooting the Celtic striker knocked the ball forward.  By this point Zlamal’s momentum was unstoppable, he cleared the Celtic striker off his feet.  The penalty was inevitable and a consequence of the maturity of a 21-year-old.

Odsonne’s craft for the winning goal was better still.  He was off like  lightening after Mikael Lustig’s header put the ball beyond the Hearts back line.  Watch Odsonn’e body shape, he opened his foot and drew his right shoulder back, as though to place the ball to Zlamal’s bottom left corner.  The keeper followed the body language but Odsonne turned his foot at the last minute and chipped the ball into the opposite side of the net.  It was delicious.

I did not think anything in domestic football could match the Invincible Treble, secured in such drama against Aberdeen in 2017, but as this journey of success has continued, the drama, the importance of each subsequent trophy, mounts.

Yesterday we retained the Scottish Cup for the ninth time in our history; the first time we won three-in-a-row and the first time in world football a Treble Treble has been completed.  Whatever it is that we are living through right now, let it’s reign be long and glorious!

Condolences of the family and friends of Harry Hood, who we lost earlier.  Harry was part of the successful Celtic team on the early 70s and was the last Celtic player to score a hat-trick against Oldco Rangers.  On leaving football became a successful business man, running some of the best restaurants, hotels and pubs in Lanarkshire.

With the Treble Treble only minutes in the history books, Celtic wasted no time in confirming Neil Lennon would become permanent manager.  We will pick this up later.

Neil Francis is Brave Bold and Undaunted. If he takes the job then he deserves Every Celtic Supporters Support. And I’m sure he will get that. We need the Board to really stand up for Neil. Revenge is a strong word.

Celtic getting a proper number 9 letting Odsonne play the game where he should – Facing the opposition goal and running at em, will be a big +.

  13. GFTB,

Looking for quality back up @ Left Back.

A First Team CH – Happy for Benkovic to come back again.

A quality Right Back would be Good.

A strong Central Midfielder that will release the ball quickly.

A Moussa Dembele type forward would be the icing on the cake.

We don’t expect Celtic to sign Messi or Ronaldo, so why would we expect the top managers to come here?

We know Neil can do a job, there is money to back him, so…

I think it will be fine.

  15. Good morning – Nice Fresh Bank Holiday Morning In The Chilterns…

Huge well done to the team, winning the treble, treble is unprecedented.

This relentless winning mentality that got this team over the line, again and again was amazing.

The same on Saturday when up against it they found that extra gear an unner strength to win the Cup.

    Congratulations to Timland!!

  16. If Benitez was ever an option then the news today that Ashley is selling NUFC to an Arab billionaire is likely the reason he stayed put. He is about to be given access to massive funding.

One could speculate that Benitez was waiting on this being confirmed . . .and we were a plan B or C.

  17. i'vehadtochangemymind on

Right – more work on the spine of the team please

    LG back – i think lennie’s helped there, I think he’s accelerated LG’s recovery

SS – BR asked SS to do more covering work (nothing wrong with that) but it stopped him and at the beginning of this season SS had lost it – involved in loads but cut inside and back every time. i hope lennie gets him back to who he is and lets him run like fugg

Lennie’s trust in hayes is going to be good for KT – give tierney a break from games – the record and treble treble have left their on a young body

    Cover for bain please

We need to remodel the mid away from broonie

Stop pi88ing about at the back and cross the ball early; all season we’ve put lovely crosses into the 6 yard line and no one’s been there

  18. Lenny has now been appointed but as I said to several people it wont matter who we appoint if we dont sign better quality players than we have in the last three windows.

I dont think we need a rebuild as we have KT, Ajer, Brown, Calmac, Forrest, Edouard, Rogic, Christie. We also have Sinclair, ntcham, hayes and some youngsters.

The board need to manage the ins and outs better than they have and TRY and move on those that NEVER play as well as of course maybe consider that SS has had his day for example.

However these are decisions to be made by Lenny and Lawell.

I have fears more about the quality of player brought in than anything else. Our standards are not as good as they were and so it would be encouraging to see some better additions than recently.

We dont score enough goals and so a centre forward is s must for me. Edouard is much better from deep and there are no guarantees over the health of LG.

It would be refreshing to see us sign players and get the squad in a good place by the end of July.

A lot of fans keep dismissing our nearest challengers but they have improved and we have gone back the way (performance wise) so a good summer would be welcome.

  19. CQN article quotes Hearts keeper as saying “I never touched him”

Firstly, yes you did. The pictures show it – though I think Eddie manufactured it a little.

Secondly, when are players, pundits and reporters going to realise that there doesn’t need to be contact for it to be a foul? If I throw a punch at you but you duck and I miss, it’s the same outcome as it is if I had connected.

When a keeper rushes out and dives in front of the striker but fails to get the ball then it’s a penalty if

    a) The keeper takes out the attacker

    b) The attacker has to jump over the keeper to avoid contact, and the in this case the keeper should be grateful as it could result in serious injury to both players

So the excuse of “I didn’t touch him” is null and void.

  20. PL’s words in papers today confirm that they never interviewed anyone else:

Lawwell said: “I’m not online, I don’t go on it. But honestly, I’ve said hundreds of times, you need blinkers in this job.

“And if you react to online, or social media, or media, then you’re dead.

“You just need to keep on doing the right things and believe in yourself and making the right decisions.

“That’s what we’ve done – without any outside influences.

“It’s a fantastic job and I’m sure there would be people looking from afar who had an idea of coming here.

“We had approaches from many, many agents, many representatives of managers across the board.

“We put them in the file, just left it and kept our word to Neil, really.

“We had a mini board meeting right after the game. Dermot’s here. Dermot, myself, the chairman (Ian Bankier) and Tom Allison decided what to do.

“We knew that Lenny was getting the job. We decided that we should kill the speculation on a high, get it out and let our supporters know and the media know.”

SO there you have it. It was Lenny’s from the word go with no alternative lined up.

Surely making the announcement when and how they did to kill speculation was reacting to media?

  24. glendalystonsils on

The CEO has said that Celtic don’t need a major rebuild . Maybe not in terms of net squad size once the ins and outs are sorted, but certainly in the calibre of recruits to key positions .

  25. We need a rebuild. Major, minor who cares….

We’re killing our core dependable stars – Brown, Lustig, KT, Callum, Forrest, Eddy etc and thanks to Brendan and Lee our next level down is mediocre – Comperr, Hendry, Mulumbu, Hayes, etc.

    What a day on Saturday.

Was actually prepared for Moyes getting the job so if he was the realistic alternative to Neil Lennon then I am pleased Neil Lennon is our new (permanent) manager.

For all the snarling photos he actually talks very impressively about the game and is far more impressive to listen to than Moyes.

The usual suspects predictably venting their wrath but still refusing to acknowledge the difficulty in getting an A-list manager to Scotland.

Realistic alternatives were thin on the ground and when the poster boy for ‘progressive’ football Marco Rose took a job in the Bundesliga many were out of suggestions.

Two big vacancies in the city of Seville would also be attractive to the small pool of high profile managers looking for a job.

Lawwell referenced Neil Lennons eye for a player which shouldnt be forgotten about. Built a side last time out from the proceeds of the McGeady sale.

We are in a far better starting position this time with young players forming a solid base and others on the fringes such as Johnstone and Dembele.

The resources are there to reshape the squad without having to sell anyone. And whats more this work is already well underway.

And finally some of the deadwood we’ve been trying to shift for 2+ years will be leaving, freeing up additional funds.

Take no notice of celebrations at Ibrox that Neil Lennon is our manager. That mob have been clinging to imaginary straws since 2011.

Big summer ahead and the nucleus of a real quality side is already here.

LUCKY CODY on 26TH MAY 2019 6:55 PM

Lennon is effectively on a month to month contract. CL failure will confirm Celtic fans were right and Lawwells cheapskate option bombed.

First league defeat will quite rightly have the fans demanding his sacking. Our revenue is greater than all other clubs combined. Our agents fees are greater than all other clubs combined. Yet we have appointed a failed manager who will take us backwards.

    ================

Firstly, you may think twice about posting info from your ‘source’ who insisted it wouldn’t be Neil Lennon.

Secondly, the sensationalist stuff about not qualifying for the CL and losing a league game…. were you drunk or do you not understand football at all? The CL qualifiers are not easy and dont forget BR’s first game in Gibraltar. He didn’t qualify last time out and when we qualified away to Beer’Sheva we were clinging on.

And no manager will be sacked after their first league defeat.

We’ll go with drunk to give you the benefit of the doubt.

True . We cannot rest players ,rotate the squad or cover for injuries without noticeably weakening the team . We have really missed KT , and if Eddy’s injury hadn’t cleared up for Saturday , God knows how that might have turned out.
