It is impossible to overstate the cultural, sporting and social impact of this event on millions of lives.  You are in for a year of unadulterated indulgence.  Enjoy every minute of it and if you meet a Lisbon Lion, make sure he hears what he did for you.

Enjoy mate, not been on today missed your post. Give Marspapa my best. He’s my Roommate at Aberdour, are you going?

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!

  2. You’re Big Phil!

I remember you! I did that walk as well – it was a brilliant time! You had a crackin’ Tom Selleck style moustache and kept everybody’s spirits up.

I remember on the Sunday, I think, when after coming down the Devil’s Staircase in the absolute pouring rain, you managed to ‘open’ a bothy for us, in Glencoe. It was well appreciated by us as we were all soaked through.

Still have some very blurry photos from that trip.

I have said this before, I was almost seven on this day 49 years ago, and I don’t remember it, I know guys younger than me who claim to remember every second of the day :-(

It’s still one of the biggest events in my life though, I feel proud every time I think about it, and to have TG on the blog today was amazing.

Can the blog last in this mood, I hope so.

    That was me!

Still got the moustache, although its a wee bit greyer!

We needed that bothy, the weather for May was awful!

Bumped into Father Donnachie not long ago.

He was our priest when I married a few years later in Edinburgh.

Did you drink in the Masonic Arms?

  5. Philbhoy,

Thanks for the prayer and concern.

    Weebobbycollins,

Would love to have been a member of that very special clique. I have only been to Seville and Milan. Third time lucky???

Season tickets renewed for the kids and myself and spent a fortune in the superstore.

I wasn’t going to renew as we were going to go a holiday instead, can’t afford both.

But then came Brendan and Monday, over 10,000 to see him.

My kids don’t need a holiday when there is Paradise.

    Hail Hail

I remember our first night on the hills just above KInlochleven.

After Fr Donnachie had said mass, he invited Peter, me and the other teacher Mr Scullion into his tent.

I had a six pack of lager and he had a bottle of malt!!

THat was a tough walk the second day!

    Fantastic memories!

And all the pupils who did that walk in that weather were heroes!

    That really was an achievement!

They were also responsible for the ending of visiting supporters overnight stay in Aberdeen.

This was always a popular weekend for Celtic supporters and was treated as our “Wembley ” weekend ; as tickets for the London games were general only available through Bowling Clubs and selected loyal outlets.

The greatest day… I finished a game of tennis with my pal and made the half mile walk home to watch the game in his house (Sftb, you’ll know him, John F from Hoddam). Although only 12, my stomach was churning on the way, not a soul on the streets.

Two hours later Castlemilk was alive. Hundreds of kids and young men running about mental with Celtic flags, a coal lorry doing the rounds picking them up to tour the scheme. Totally inspired by Celtic’s wonderful performance, we headed to my school football pitch St Dominics for a game. I swear there were four games going on, four balls on the park, but nobody cared, everyone was a Lisbon Lion. To this day I’ve never felt anything like it, gripped by the sheer euphoria of that epic victory, and every boy on that pitch was the same. I feel as if I can recall every minute of that evening.

I never saw the old man for two days. He remembers very little, due to an all night lock-in in a Gorbals boozer.

Don’t worry, sure she’ll not tell her pals about her dad greetin’ at a fitba’ photo!

  17. Had a happy Lisbon Day everyone? I was just 8 years old, my birthday present had been a ticket for the Vojvodina game, what a sacrifice from my parents who were not flush at all and not even football fans. Thanks , belatedly. We were at my uncles to watch the game as he had a “big” telly, he was rushed to hospital , appendicitis, before game started, That was that.

Time to look forward to a rebirth hopefully of our club.

    Hail! Hail!

  18. Used to drink in the Masonic Arms until I moved way in the late 80s/early 90s. And quiz night in the social club on a Tuesday!

Mexico 86 was brilliant – I remember being upstairs in the function for the Uruguay game and being really impressed when they produced Mexican food at half time! Really thought we were going to do it that time. Despite it being called the Masonic Arms, I never felt unwelcome – I always thought it was at least 50/50 in favour of Tims.

Father Donnachie blessed our wedding – a lovely man.
