Yes we are definitely related. Aunty Cathy was my wee ma’s sister and my godmother and was one of the most kind, caring and beautiful woman anyone could ever have had the pleasure to meet. Sadly she is no longer with us.

My wee girl is laughing at me while I am crying looking at that photo of the Lisbon Lions.

When tell her I am taking her phone and laptop off her and she is grounded for a week we will see who is crying then.

Personally, I don’t Brendan necessarily needs an assistant who knows all about Scottish football. I think he will have a fair idea about bus parking and hammer throwing ,which just about covers it on the football side.

It wouldn’t go amiss though, to watch a few tapes of referee performances from such as Brothers McLean, Thomson and Madden.

That is something he’s unlikely to have come across in the EPL.

Cathy was a lovely woman. Uncle Andy is my late mum’s brother and we lived in Janefield Street until I was 10, when we moved to Condorrat, besides Helen and Charlie.

At first, I thought you were a cousin on the McDermott side.

You might well see Angela before me, so if you do, wish her all the best as I understand she’s not having the best time of it due to folk making life tough for her.

    Hail Hail to you!

By coincidence, I was looking at that photograph just as you posted.

I was in the North Stand that day and had a birds eye view of the pitch invasion. To this day, I still find incredible is that not a single Celtic supporter in the 108000 crowd came on to the pitch.

The following is an item of press coverage of the event…

“* Rangers fans RIOT as Celtic win cup.

Hundreds of *Rangers fans charged the victorious Celtic team at the end of yesterday’s League Cup final.

As the final whistle blew and Celtic formed to go up and receive the trophy bottle-throwing broke out on the West terracing, traditionally the *Rangers end.

Police dived into the crowd and scores of running battles took place. Then more riots flared as Celtic ran onto the field with cup.

As they started their lap of honour, hundreds of blue-scarved fans swarmed over the barrier.

Soon the *Rangers fans had surrounded the Celtic players, who were making a desperate bid to get back to the dressing-rooms.

Celtic right back Ian Young and trainer Neil Mochan were both knocked to the ground in the debacle.

Skipper Billy McNeill, clutching the cup, was almost knocked over by a fan.

Police then started mopping up operations and 16 fans were arrested before the field was cleared. Another 30 fans were arrested outside the ground. The scene the players left behind was like the aftermath of a battle. Bottles and glass strewn around. Arrested fans were frog-marched across the pitch,

More than 100 people were treated by ambulance men at the ground, Seventy were taken to the Victoria Infirmary.

SFA President Tom Reid said …”We must be fair, until the final scenes, the crowd had been very well behaved”.

Mr Maurice Shinwell, Glasgow’s senior baillie, attended the Old Firm final at Hampden.

Last night he said “Throughout the game the fans were reasonably well behaved. Brilliant police handling averted what could have been a nasty situation after the game finished”.

    * Please note that the *Rangers referred to in the above article entered liquidation in 2012 and remain there to this day. The Rangers who lost in Saturday’s cup final are NOT the same club.

Talking of pitch invasions, it is hard to believe it is 49 years since Lisbon. Privileged to have been there and the memories are still vivid.

    Good luck Brendan.

    Winning Captains

You have done a fantastic job bringing the Lions onto the blog. I hope they ( and you) realise how much it is appreciated!

    ——

    Well said.

Unfortunately missed TG today, but a huge thank you to Tommy and all the Lions for what they did that day.

    Hail hail!

  13. The last few days on the Blog have been awesome!

    ———

Agreed. More important that he has someone he knows and trusts and whose working methods are familiar to him and vice-versa. JK is still around, isn’t he?

  16. The current playing squad will know all about Scottish football and the mibs.

There will be video evidence too.

John Kennedy is still in place but whether he’ll remain and if so ,in what capacity, remains to be seen.

I’d be reluctant to criticise him as a defensive coach because of the injury problems and chopping/changing we went through, but I know Brendan will study tapes of our defending thoroughly and make his mind up from there.

Missed Tommy today and Brendan on Monday :-(

Been out training for the Help pilgrimage next Monday and have nearly 80 miles under the belt from walking since last Monday. Unfortunately the pitstops are helping to compensate the calorie burn :-)

Made the decision to renew and now put my trust in Celtic to take the cheats to task. Don’t let me down pls.

  20. Philbhoy,

We used to walk round the edge of Maree to go the Spar after playing on the ash pitches (either the red or the black one)

I was at St Maurice’s as a pupil, it sounds more like you were employed there. Or am I picking you up wrong?

  21. Gordon

Thanks for the response to the photo I linked. I thought it was poignant in more ways than one today after Tommy Gemmell guesting, and Saturday’s invaders.

I posted earlier in the week that virtually every play off game in Britain ended in a pitch invasion, but only one

involving the new Rangers ended in with a public enquiry, and violence.

Ian Young really was assaulted and the picture also depicts the last lap of honour ever to be staged at Hampden because of that attack.

Something else Scottish football has to thank them for.

  23. On the 25th May 1967 I was four and nine months old…can’t remember the day if I am being honest. However, that day will live with me forever as I became a Celtic Supporter and will be until the day I die.

On Warburton, is pan breid or is it just that he is plain missing…I’ll get my Coat…:)

I went to school with Peter Quail, PE teacher at St Maurices, and my best man was Mike Jackson, his wife Irene was a PE teacher at the same school.

I helped raise some funds for the school by walking the West Highland Way in 1983 due to my friendship with Peter, plus I worked for a company with 500 employees so sponsorhip was easy.

Played golf with Joe Swarzik(sp) at Dullatur now and again too. Also played golf with the Wales who had the newsagents.

    Lovely people, all of them.

This day 49 years ago was the beginning of the end of the Huns. What a day and what a night.

I was 17 and only a few weeks earlier was invited by my pal Tam Armour to meet him at Shawlands Cross before heading up to Hampden for the Scottish Cup Final against Aberdeen. En route to that game Tam suggested we go into the Corona Bar for a pint. That was the first time I had been in a pub as a customer.

A few weeks later Tam chapped the door of my house at Peat Rd roundabout and asked “Where are we gonnae celebrate the best result we’ve ever hud?”

My reply was “The Garryowen at Gorbals Cross”

What a night for two 17 year old boys. The whole of the Gorbals was jumpin. We finished up standing on the seats in the Garryowen singing our hearts out.

When we got back to the bus stop at The Coliseum in Bridge St I bumped into a guy who used to be a neighbour in Kinning Park and was a year older than me and he said “Aw we need noo is fur the Rangers tae beat Bayern Munich next Wednesday and Scotland wull hiv baith European Cups”

    He was obviously a Hun.

I absolutely loved telling him “I hope yeez get f*cked!!!!” (and they did)

That really was the night the Huns died.

What a night. What a game. What a team. Raise a glass to the legends who are The Lisbon Lions.

Welcome Brendan and Chris Davies. History beckons.

    Hail Hail
