    The green man,

I’ve still not lost my Ayrshire accent , just means folk up here don’t understand me!

Now I used to share a flat with folk from Fraserburgh that was a daily challenge:-)

Like you, my memory is of an explosion of football breaking out straight after the game. I think we were so buzzed by the experience that I remember little else but a 40 a side game on the big square of grass in front of our house in Scarrel Road.

We had watched the match on our own telly as a family; we were too large a family to invite neighbours round to watch- they’d have had to stand in the lobby and peek round into the front room to catch anything.

One detail stands out vividly to this day. As the match ended we wanted to proclaim our joy and our allegiance as neighbours houses started to sport tricolours, scarves and an occasional strip. I had never possessed a replica top and we could not locate my da’s much loved dark green scarf, but I did possess a pair of Celtic hooped socks and we hung one of these out of each of the two side windows. It was poor fare, as gestures go, but I was never more proud of two smelly socks. They proclaimed who we were and represented our claim to be part of what we had just witnessed.

As you recall, a few weeks later we went on our own European conquering tour with the school trip to Belgium. We were naive and parochial with no real vision of what continental people did or how we should act around them. But we walked tall with the pride of Celtic excusing every bit of ignorance we had as we were introduced to the weird newness of coffee, continental rolls and waffles. We wore a cloak of confidence borrowed from 11 guys who were Champions of Europe and who were Our Team. We were never bigger, never prouder and never more deserving than we were then.

  3. So Lpool are releasing Kolo Toure, interesting to see if Brendan still rates him, he signed him, could be just what we need in the defence for a while till we get it sorted.

This will tell us if there is a real change in the recruitment, if he wants him that is.

Toure is the kinda player that I have been harping on about for long enough, got mega exp, wages will cost and no sell on mind you but he will help the kids big time.

If we have ambitions of the CL, players like him is what we need imo.

Just caught up on the wonderful and often emotional posts earlier.

    Twists.

Can remember my old man going up to the clachan after the final whistle to celebrate the win by the greatest team ever seen. Ten o’clock closing in those days but there was a wee lock-in. Came home in the early hours with a cairy-oot and more than a few tims in tow. If memory serves including your uncle lachie and aunty Madge. Not sure if your da was there. Also wee rab h and big bill may have been present.

Sorry I missed tg earlier. Been brought up believing the Tammy he wore at the end was knitted by my Nana after being presented with it by my grandfather who never missed a game.

I remember Billy McNeill throwing the cup to I think Tommy G for safe keeping while he put up his jooks for business. Celtic were blamed of course, for doing the traditional lap of honour and thereby causing offence to the perennial offendees, who had no option but to riot.

I remember as well that SFA typically side-stepped the issue by banning laps of honour. The ban was observed until the next time exRFC (IL) won a cup, when surprise surprise they did a lap of honour! Some things never change.

Madge passed away a year ago. Lockie few years ago. Big Bill terminally ill at the minute. Wee Rab sadly gone too.

Madge was the barmaid in the Clachan for a while. Guid Tim pub back then, not so much now I believe.

Gimme a clue! Who are ya?

A lot of wee smiles while reading today’s blog, the bhoys remembering when they were just kids going to school, and a lot of them taking sickies to get off school for the day, it makes me smile and sad at the same time thinking how many kids skipped school to watch history in the making.

I was lucky enough to be at the game that day and I’m proud to say it was a game where Celtic were outstanding on the day, We were up against the best defensive team in the world at that time, (according to the papers) ‘It’ll be tough for Celtic’ was the quote, little did they know it was tough for the Italians, they thought they would score one goal and defend for the rest of the game but they had to defend for 90 minutes and Celtic were very unlucky not to score more.

It made me proud to be supporting the Celtic, I don’t know what others who were at that game would say, but that day sucked me into being a Celtic Supporter for life, hook, line, and sinker.I would never dream of changing it for any other team.

There were a few mishaps getting to Lisbon but nothing major, when loading the car someone put the two main rods for ten man tent on the roof and forgot to tie them down so the tent was never put up, we ended up with a bed made up with ground sheet and the tent for the cover, it never rained so we were a bit lucky.

One of the youngest spotted a market stall when we went through London the driver stopped and the lad went over and came back with a bag of something, He offered the packet but no one accepted, he had only bought unshelled shrimps and when the noise that was starting to annoy me and I saw what he was eating, I said you can’t eat the shell, so you can guess what happened next, he complained about feeling sick, after a couple of hours he asked the driver to stop got out the car and brought everthing up and that’s not what worried us, he was the 2nd driver. So went on our way and the one driver drove the whole way to Lisbon and back.

.That was the worst thing that happened in the whole 11 day trip.

Can you believe there was only regret in the whole trip, that was not being with the thousands who turned up to watch the return of My beloved Celtic. body telling me call it a day.

Excuse the spelling, and grammar. commas and fullstops.

By the Way,you supporters who went over for the game made the greatest game even better.

    And to end it all.

    A very Happy an

anniversary to the Lisbon Lions. you made the whole trip, worth while.

Mega proud when we got to Victoria or Waterloo station in London, to look up at a huge billboard with GLASGOW CELTIC EUROPEAN CHAMPIONS (Goal magazine advert,)

  10. I was in Lisbon, as a 12 year old. We were staying in Estoril, and the morning after the game we went along to the team’s hotel-my grandfather, who took me to Lisbon, seemed to know everyone involved with Celtic. The team were all round the pool, catching the sun before the flight home. At the time, to me, it just seemed the sort of thing you would do, normal. Talking to Billy McNeill and Bertie, and Sean. God, youth is wasted on the young. To quote Wordswoth, Bliss was it in that dawn to be alive, but to be young was very Heaven.

For me, that was your best post ever, the pride instilled, energised the minority above any station the establishment could possibly grant. We became leaders and the genie has never been put back in the bottle. They tried their best but we have moved from strength to strength.

  16. Brendan Rodgers says he has identified the weaknesses in the Celtic squad and will now begin rectifying them ahead of next season.

In recent years, Celtic have opted for zonal-marking from set-pieces, something which has led to a number of high-profile errors and cost the Hoops in big European and domestic games.

Rodgers has also gone into overdrive and analysed ever detail in Celtic’s play, including every goal they have scored and conceded, from before he was even appointed as Celtic manager.

As quoted by the Glasgow Evening Times, he said:

Since I was appointed I’ve looked at every single goal Celtic have scored and conceded.

I know where there are areas we can improve on and gain. That’s important for us. I probably started doing that a wee bit before I was appointed. I had the idea I was coming.

Steve Welsh/Getty Images SportSteve Welsh/Getty Images Sport

The recent shortcomings in European football have been widely criticised, and this is one issue Rodgers will look to resolve in time for the Champions League qualifiers that start in July.

Celtic’s performances against Malmo in Sweden, Molde both home and away as well as decisive moments against Fenerbahce and Ajax led to their exit from European football before Christmas.

They fell short last year on a couple of set-pieces. That’s what stopped them going through.

I’ll need to assess things and I’ll need to look. There are some good players here and some young talents.

I can look and identify all I want from a distance. You always have an idea of how to change things and there are one or two players I’ll want to bring in, but I want to look and speak to the players who are here.

The Celtic players did come to Lisbon airport about 1 in the morning however they were accompanying their wives and girlfriends who were due to fly out around that time.

I think there was a problem with the flight and they returned to Lisbon.

    Nobody was bothered !

The team flew back the later that day.

My fourth birthday was a few days before the Ayrshire, Glasgow and Lanarkshire bhoys playing for our team, gave all our supporters and lovers of football anywhere, the greatest treat ever.

My family were at Celtic Park for the Lions’ homecoming the following day. My dad later told me , it was the only game that surpassed the 7 1 game.

As a wee aside , someone I know who was born in late February 1968 , describes himself as Lisbon baby.

When he started primary school, he told me roughly half his class were born in the last week of February orthe first week in March. A teacher friend of his dad , said the primary one intake in August 1968 was a lot bigger than that in August 1967.
