Aberdeen 1-1 Celtic

1425

It was an unfamiliar Celtic starting line-up at Pittodrie this afternoon which resulted in the visitors dropping league points for the first time in four months.  Andre Blackman and Mikael Lustig made their Celtic debuts at left and right back respectively, while Charlie Mulgrew played central midfield alongside Joe Ledley.

Neither full back got forward as often as we are accustomed to see Celtic play, which perhaps contributed to the disjointed performance.

Charlie Mulgrew almost opened the scoring on 5 minutes when his swerving free kick rebounded back off the inside of Jason Brown’s far post in Celtic’s only genuine chance before the 28th minute goal.  Mulgrew was key again in the move that counted, controlling a difficult ball before twisting his marker and knocking the ball forward to Kris Commons.  Commons spun before playing a perfectly weighted pass into space inside the box for Anthony Stokes to run onto.  Stokes first touch took the ball past Brown in the Aberdeen goal before he slotted his shot into the net.

Aberdeen were well out of the contest in the first half and had to wait until near the end of the half before they managed an attempt at goal, a Fyvie shot which was blocked.  Then, only seconds from the break, a long ball forward to Fallon brought Aberdeen level.  Fallon turned and his forward run drew Blackman, Wilson and Rogne, leaving the right back space unattended.  Gavin Rae ran 70 yards to fill that space and fired a shot which was going narrowly wide before Blackman’s block bounced over Forster into the net.

A minute into the second half Ryan Jack almost reached a cross from the right as Aberdeen seemed to take encouragement from their goal.

Anthony Stokes looked Celtic’s best player but whenever he linked with strike partner, Gary Hooper, the ball invariably bounced out of play or to an Aberdeen player, most notably on the 55th minute when Hooper failed to control on the edge of the six yard box.

Aberdeen’s best chance to win the game arrived on 63 minutes when Meganson evaded Lustig but shot wide when clean through inside the box.

‘fraid Lenny appeared to get it wrong today re. the substitutions ………..unless there were injuries we don’t know about.

Hooper was some way short of useless. Why leave Brozek sat on the bench ? He’ll be asking the same question.

Forrest had one of his most frustrating displays ever. Clueless. McGeouch should have been a direct replacement.

I feel sorry for Commons who has got the nouse ( and showed it with the goal ) but, when things aren’t going too well, he gets the blame. Lennon doesn’t even acknowledge his efforts when he comes off ! He’ll be gone in the summer.

Both Blackman and Lustig played well I thought but, by being substituted, will be left feeling rather low.

Yes, Lenny’s done fantastic so far. No doubt on that but, today he got it wrong and his face told the story at the end. He was angry at himself.

    I think.

i know its tweets but you never know ,and it would suit a lot of people for there not to be a glasgow derby.

  7. “@the_eriugena: Ibrox source says SFA set to announce record points deduction for #Rangers next week in the region of 50-60 points”

Could they be on a negative points total? That would be so funny!

  8. Mad Mitch seems to be the target for some invective. As usual he demands perfection, and complains when it is not forthcoming. As is his right.

Howevva (att Kojo) Neil took the opportunity to assess the real depth of his squad. In just in time as we have three possible season forming games ahead. Scottish Cup away, inevitably, at Dundee. LC final a week later and then the Glasgow Bragging Rights game against Rangers FC (in administration).

He learned that Lustig is a capable deputy,

Commons is either unfit, disinterested or rusty

James Forrest needs wrapped in cotton wool

Hooper needs a good kick in the rear

VW and Broony are essential for the upcoming games.

    We are still unbeaten.

What has brought all of this on with Burley ?… where did it all turn sour ?

When the bitter hun stopped being paid by Celtic.

I also think Murdo McLeod said something to the effect of (If Celtic) paid me more then I would be able to do my job better.

  10. Ghuys, can we please stop with the rumours.I will not believe they are doomed until I see a forced evacuation of players from Ibroke. The Huns’ finger nails seem to be made of titanium. Their death grip seemingly cannot be prised open. Concerned my Ice cream may be past its sell by date by the time we can relax and enjoy their demise.

OK maybe I’m missing something but IF it’s true, why would a points deduction mean no glasgow derby? Because it would trigger liquidation?

  12. Well, not the best performance of the season however,

    1. We extended our lead at the top to 21 points

    2. Our last domestic defeat was more than 5 months ago on 2nd October, 25 games unbeaten.

I remain a very happy and contented Jobo

BMTHOTCR -absolutely correct. Lenny got the team wrong today. Particularly the midfield, not the fullbacks as has been suggested.

It happens. But to claim other reasons is disingenuous.

Lenny has done brilliantly and I have been an avid supporter even when others were turning their backs, but he got it wrong today.

I reckon he will know that and hopefully learn the lesson.

    P.s. Stupid Huns, hehehe.

I’m in an awful mood..not helped by Celtic but mostly down to Aberdeen Weather.

Son no2 unexpectedly got a shout to play for P7 school team – so outside from 8.30am – lashing down. He then played for his own P5 team at ASV (a big indoor fridge) at 11:00 he got taken off at 11;50 and we ran to Pittodrie to brave the elements and rubbish football for a few hours (felt longer)…

Rogne was great, Mulgrew good, Ledley good, Vic superb when he came on, Stokes showed his class a few times – the rest were very average. I have to say quite a few of the Aberdeen fans sitting around me enquired who the fat guy was – Commons, I felt he was about 2 stone too late in most challenges – that was when he looked interested.

Sorry to see the winning streak end but it was a joy to listen to Greeen Brigade a credit to Scottish football….they brightened up an otherwise dull day

Just heard David Begg’s commentary as the huns scored – absloute sheer delight in his voice. The contrast when he describes a Celtic goal is astonishing. It’s actually quite comical!

So, out of top 6, no glasow derby – what would Mr Keevins and his SKY contract must be honoured at all costs make of that, I wonder.

Didn’t join the GUCSC until 1981….spent the next 7 years in it, before heading to Michael Davitt CSC in Liverpool in 1988.

  26. Thought Blackman looked decent going forward, some nice passes – but defensively he was all over the shop. Poor positioning and diving into challenges in the centre of the park and in midfield… left Rogne and Wilson scrambling to cover him. Looks promising though with some work between now and next season.

Lustig looked decent, quite pacy and used the ball well. Other than that, just felt like a performance phoned in. Still, now’s the time to have one of those games.

  27. If a player is registered with a 3rd party surely it is the 3rd party whom is responsible for paying their salaries. Come Monday if 3rd party contracted players still in place then that suggest 3rd party will still be paying. Leaves Rangers to cut 1M from remainder. Most likely excluding McGregor, Davis and Whittaker.

Also any players contracted to a 3rd party will be banned from playing moving forward.

  28. sparkleghirl on

hector (or anyone else who can answer)

so 3rd party players wouldn’t be allowed to play, but 3rd party has to contiue paying them, because 3rd party, not being in administration, cannot justify terminating their contracts?
