I’d agree with all of that mate. Yep your guessing towards the end but more of us are guessing the same thing.

  2. Ok,I am not a fan of Commons, just like our manager, but if we win the league and he scores 20/30 goals I will pretend I am his number one fan .Why?,because Celtic is bigger than any one man..If that makes any sense.

  4. Jamesgang, I know you were, just poking fun.

We also have Allan for this season, and Armstrong, Johansen(not on current form though),

Did I mention Commons, we have him too, could someone remind Ronny?

  5. I heard he was dead @ 10:44 pm

“That is some claim – he did what he did in Norway in a year in Scotland because he inherited Neil Lennon’s team and it took him long enough to get them to play especially after dropping the player of the previous year for too many matches.”

There may be other reasons why he won the title but I was addressing the original point made that a) he was a rookie and b) he had achieved nothing in the game,

“He won a one team league with the most expensively assembled squad.”

That’s a good thing. We have seen other leagues lost by teams who have the same advantages.

“It was the very least expected of him and he had to weaken our cup final opponents into winning the other cup.”

Aye, and we beat them 6:1 when they had SA and GMS (and Ciftci). We still won

“He’s not a great manager, he’s not Norway’s answer to Dortmund’s Klopp as some people tried to paint him when he turned up.”

I have no recollection of anyone making such a claim. His coaching line up and reliance might be the same as Klopp’s (and Schmidt’s at Salzburg) but that does not make him their equivalent.

“He’s an average manager who is being found out and found wanting.”

Maybe, but lots of good managers have had tough spells and even failed at clubs- Jock at Leeds, Clough at Leeds and later on in his career.

The difference between using it on Chrome and on Firefox is night and day. This is much smoother, the writing is easier to read, the layout is spaced out better … those who’re having problems, try Chrome if you can use it on your device.

Denayer was slated early last season, the return of the sieve was mentioned!

VvD is a loss, but not as much as Denayer, and at that price, it was a no brainier.

Good player, potential to become better, but his partner was better, much better.

So, we will get there, given time, games, and coaching.

Last year many, around this time, were saying Ronny had no clue, was out of his depth, and we should punt him. I argued the opposit. We won a double, so was I right?

Evidence of last year says so.

So this year, I repeat, Ronny will get it right, far more often than not.

You have no idea how jealous I am of your Celtic experience mate.

  17. its getting harder and harder to stand by Ronnie , as much as I want him to do well. Think back to when he arrived……We were told He likes playing a fast tempo game , pressing teams high up the park , he did nt want to just beat teams but “murder” them …………. I just dont see this and just dont see it happening anytime soon .We all expected blips along the way but twice he never made the champs league ( last year he can be excused as he was just in the door) but this year we had a favourable draw , we were 2 up in the tie and still we did nt make it . The ICT semi final last year still hurts , yes we were cheated out a penalty but tactically the were far superior than we were for all the 90 minutes . While I did nt realistically think we would be pressing teams high up the park in europe ,I really thought domestically we would be and totally controlling games . Hate to bring Sevco into this but we really should be doing to most teams in this league what they are now doing to teams in their league ie full of confidence and cruising past teams. IMHO I think hes too stubborn to admit his mistakes , he really needs to learn quick or I think it will all end in tears as the way I see it so far ..Ronnie talks a great game ……..but ……….think you know the rest

  18. That’s brilliant, all the big money players at man city and it is an 18 yr old debutant who wins the match for them. And what a lovely joyful expression when he scored. You may disagree and that’s absolutely fine but we do know about football.”

I do not and did not disagree with that judicious distinction between “know” and “think” in your first sentence. People who have run football teams at any serious level will know what is and, more importantly, what is not easily controlled by a coach or manager. That there are posters who are better informed and more experienced than others on here- there is absolutely no doubt about that.

But there is still a gap to be bridged between experience of coaching talented kids at an amateur level and semi-pro level, and working with a squad full of seasoned professional footballers and internationalists.

Having had the experience that you and lionroars have, you are more careful than most to avoid the BS claim that “I ( or my wife) could do his job easily”, which was the point I was disputing, and not the perfectly reasonable distinction you make.

James Forrest. Enjoyed your piece and the linked one, Pale Horse. Reminded me of all the times over the years I could have wept at Lawwell pulling his punches when we could have taken huge strides forward. He got lucky at times, in particular Lenny’s ability to deliver success in spite rather than because of the Godforsaken ‘strategy’, but we are now seeing the full fruits of his work. Everything on the cheap – the manager, loan deals, SPFL dross signings, £2m cap on transfers, Scott Brown wage level cap… Massive player turnover as we try to find a diamond in the rough we can sell on as soon as possible. A weak and compliant manager willing to forsake team building in gratitude for being massively and unexpectedly over promoted. Player quality degrading year on year, with results to match – Legia, Maribor, Malmo (not to mention Artmedia, Utrecht, Braga, Sion). And now the 10 men of Aberdeen. The extinguishing of all ambition, drowned out in a sea of spin about ‘moneyball’ and the impossibility of competing with the EPL and Championship (as if those are the only leagues in the world we can be benchmarked against). Using the debacle at Ibrox to justify prioritising debt elimination at the expense of reasonable investment is bogus economics, in keeping with Tory austerity. In 11 years he’s systematically replaced the greatest Celtic team I’ve seen in my lifetime with the mediocrity of today. And all the while he’s managed to persuade large numbers of people that he’s some kind of mastermind worthy of the annual surge in remuneration. In person I’m told he is impressively slick, but then so are all the best snake oil salesmen. Like you I’m not buying and opinion is shifting the same way amongst the boys that I talk to.

  25. PeterLatchfordsBelly:

    Thanks for that mate.

What astounds me is that, like the government’s austerity narrative, what Celtic fans are being asked to accept is not a consequence of circumstances, as many would have us believe.

It is a choice, a deliberate, systematic, choice made by people in the full understanding of what it means.

We’re told that it has to be this way, that we don’t have other options.

To put it baldly, and bluntly, that is a bare faced lie, but it’s one that is “accepted” by a large number of people. No-one on the left of Labour is talking about building a New Jerusalem with specially printed ten pound notes, and no-one in the Celtic support is advocating Rangers style spending far less the Manchester City type fantasy football stuff that is such a scandal and an outrage at a time when millions of people don’t even have enough money to buy basics like food.

But those are the weapons we’re hit with again and again and again, as if we’re talking about the height of recklessness, instead of simply doing what is right, and in our own best interests.

I genuinely believe we’re in big bother. Aberdeen has a two point advantage and a game in hand. They win that on Wednesday, we’re in Amsterdam the following night. I see no evidence that we will avoid a seriously bad result. If that comes about, we return on Friday morning to a Sunday game which, if Aberdeen win the day before, becomes a do-or-die match … in September.

We drop anything … and the reaction of the last couple of weeks is going to seem like a Swedish massage to those who think they’ve seen anger.

And all of that will pale into insignificance, completely, if we stumble enough to put retaining the league title into significant doubt.

Hey, I am sick playing Cassandra. I said a lot of this in the Wilo Flood window, right on this site, and three years of Hell followed it. On 11 October 2011 our whole club stared briefly into the abyss of the most sustained and serious crisis it has experienced since the early 90’s.

My old man was there that night, and he said the Kilmarnock fans inspired the Celtic fans and that inspired the Celtic team. Neil Lennon is on record as saying he considered his future, and if he’d gone that night there’s nothing on Earth that would have saved others at our club.

We turned it around and the league race with it, but the last great lucky hand Lawwell was dealt was the cack-handed way those at Rangers handled the administration of their club. Had they survived that – unlikely as that is – I genuinely don’t believe we’d be chasing four in a row right now. We’d lost three of the four before it … and the board appointed a rookie as manager in response.

That, too, was more luck than foresight.

That luck has to run out. In terms of ability to turn a profit from players, some are speculating that Virgil is the last of those, and so it already might be a busted flush in that regard.

And then where are we? What’s the plan? Further cuts?

Good luck selling that “vision” to the fans.

I hate it, I hate all of it, and I hope beyond all sense that the guys on here who defend the strategy are right, that they know more than I do, that they have it sussed and I have it dead, dead wrong.

But I’m not wrong. This gets worse before it gets better, and it only ends one way.

Most people would consider ”the league” to mean the top league.

Bringing those two managers into your argument to defend your point is silly because they are not our rivals in the first place and if you are using them as a defence for Ronny Deila to remain in a job when they failed in lower leagues while having a bigger budget than their competition then you are actually agreeing with me – they didn’t keep their jobs and Ronny Deila won’t if things get worse. The board will bite the bullet if the gap gets bigger and the fans will demand it.

Managers with bigger budgets than the opposition who fail to win the league they are in (or in one case get promotion) don’t keep their jobs.

The same rules apply with Ronny Deila. Should he lose this league, the results will be catastrophic but people like you will be sitting in April telling us how Ronny is the man and Aberdeen will fold.

    It’s simply not credible anymore.

  34. Good morning everybody

Not been on this blog in a while and only read back a bit of yesterday and this morning’s contributions. I cannot imagine I would have enjoyed Saturday’s musings.

I think that Peter Latchford’s Belly at 1,05 articulates very well how I feel and can only add that having failed to qualify for the Champions’s League against clubs with fewer financial resources and in one case a smaller population base than the teams who knocked us out and then read the headline figures of the club’s annual report I can only conclude that the club is failing on the park whilst failing its shareholders off it. Turnover little more 2/3 of what it was two years ago? C’mon that is not brilliant surely?

And the team certainly is not brilliant. I read SFTB’s statistical comparison of recent season’s ‘starts’ with interest but no great surprise. Stats are useful but whilst the emotional accountants out there ( who do not include SFTB I might add) will scoff I would assert that this ‘feels’ different to previous years when we hardly sprang out the blocks either. Some of the new signings – Boyata and Ciftci most obviously- have not made auspicious starts to their Celtic careers and the fear is that our scouting system is now uncovering defenders who are every bit as inept in their area of play as the misfiring strikers we have been regularly landing post Hooper and Stokes have proved. As for dressing room ‘unrest’ well I would hope players would be angry after the shabby recent displays but I suspect that the unrest (should it exist) is not that – quite possibly the exact opposite as spoilt brat players reacting badly to being told by some home truths by their manager and his assistant. All this is conjecture of course and the rumours of players getting into dressing rooms post Malmo to read their mobile phones whilst the coaching staff were raging might be just that ie rumours.

Anyway it is time I got up and faced the world. It’s going to be a long hard week.
