Act before talk of shaming the club

1133

“I said to the players at half time that we were shaming the club at the moment and they had to go out and show some pride in the shirt”, the words of Neil Lennon to the BBC after the game on Saturday.

Pride in the shirt is a requirement any manager should ask of his team, and it is notable that the subsequent goal-scorers both have strong connections to the club, but it probably had little to do with the second half performance from Anthony Stokes, Charlie Mulgrew and our the impressive James Forrest.  Calls to pride are limited in what they can achieve, genuine talent is far more effective.

At the AGM on Friday and again in his post-match comments on Saturday, Neil alluded to the fragility of his own position.  Had the game finished 3-0 to Kilmarnock I think he would have walked away.  This would have been a great pity.

Neil is learning on the job. He was not gifted the benefits of experience without actually having to work through difficult times as a manager.  Before his thoughts turn to his own position, before our season is too far gone to save, he should recruit an experienced assistant.  Someone who knows the challenges of working with a disparate group of players, who can deal with the challenges of a demanding board and supporter base.

The need for a mentor was evident 18 months ago and is screamingly so now.  For the sake of Celtic, do the necessary.

  1. having been a non cierpo and trading on others talents this bbc1 show has just taught me about the sub prime, prime fantastica like it

I do feel proud of the club attempting to live within their means and achieve success especially with the bizarre wages in the EPL. However in this market that means we will not see many if any established quality players in their prime. If that type of player were on offer, I’d be tempted to be endebted to one individual unless he was a loon !

  3. We have had more than a few hardy players in our time. Anyone who has ever been in Wee Berties company will know he has a twinkle in his eye when he talks about sorting out some of the opposition.

Bertie would find the comments made by some on here to be ridiculous. Greig was a hard player, msometimes dirty. We had guys like that as well. Bertie included, as admitted by himself

  4. Seen the debate about Wallstreet. Thanks petec for your link last night high quality and spot on. The Dems are still better than the repubnicans(deliberate sp) tho…

Paul if not Smilies what about the introduction of poll’s such as are we satisfied with the board, the team, the manager and how things are going.

My answers are: No they made the wrong appointments but to spend more would be reckless, no some are not on form and some like hooper have always been a bit overrated (in my subhuman mind), undecided on the manager and deeply unhappy about the current points gap. A polls section of the blog would be quite intriguing.

  7. Only read back a few pages. If the posts are true about them forfeiting add-ons from the danny wilson deal for the friendly, then it would fit with them suing the weather lottery two weeks ago for circa £30k (oh the irony).. Looks like the back of the cupboard is now being raided. Happy days!

Greig – on the radio before the berwick cup game this season being asked about their famous defeat. Not word for word but the reply was along the lines of – the ref was from edinburgh. I knew him. I asked him for a few more minutes at the end. I eventually had to tell him to stop the game, as we were never going to equalise. Kinda says it all for me about their version of Caesar.

Why are Celtic supporters falling out with other Celtic supporters over a thug ex Rangers player???????????????????????????????????????????????

    Hail hail

  10. Re McFadden;

A number of posters are lambasting JMCF for going to Everton for the cash.

    1. We dont know if Celtic made an offer

    2. We dont know what Everton have offered

    3. We dont know if Everton felt it necessary to trial JMCF

In addition to the above, why should McFadden come to Celtic? (apart for emotional reasons).

Even if the cash was comparable (highly unlikely), did he want to come to play at half-empty away grounds at inconvenient times on rubbish pitches with rubbish facilities?? To play in a league whose european co-efficient resembles a rapidly sinking ship?

I say this as a 20-odd year Celtic fan, who was there in the bad old days of the mid 90s. At that stage, however, we were not limited to a TV income of just 1% of the English Premier League.

We need out of this league NOW. Not in 5 years. NOW. The EPL have blocked our direct entry to the top flight. Have we sought entry to League 2 or the Conference? Financially, we would not be any worse off- our share of the annual £15mill is paltry in terms of the running of the club. European football at Champions League level is looking a forlorn prospect over the next few seasons in any event and will be unattainable at this rate.

Lets apply to the lower English leagues to seek promotion in due course. I see that a Notts Forest striker in the Championship is on £50k per week. A Championship player on more that the King of Kings in his prime at Celtic.

The club will disappear, and at an accelerating rate, if such radical action is not pursued immediately. And no, we don’t need Rangers to pursue this course. ACTION NOW!!!!

  11. Barcabhoy

But we haven`t had any managers who were part of an anti-Catholic establishment have we?

  12. The Honest Mistake (Sickened) on

I’m hearing rumours that a sheikh consortium/mega rich bar steward (not in the someone else’s money Craig Whyte way) is coming to buy rangers and guarantee 60 million for new players. Whit wis that oinking in the sky?

  13. Petec would also like to say that the link makes a lot more sense than the belief about Illuminati, the blunder builders group, reptilians and satanic cults and aliens.

What does the eye on the back of the dollar really mean? Probably a sane, rational and sensible answer (these things are not mutually exclusive) would appear on wiki.

  14. Just came on for a quick look and what do I fine, some people praising Greig, what a joke, they obviously didnt see this cretin playing against us,the word animal springs to mine.Have agood look at yourselfs this man epitomised that biggoted shower.Slan

  17. I was at the game when John Greig broke Bobby Lennox’s leg and also at the game when Bertie Auld broke Davie Provans leg.

Both at the same end at Ibrox Park if I remember correct, your end.

Met Bertie a few times, hardy bugger just like Greig, still a great player though.

And you know what, never crossed my mind to bring it up, to busy having a laugh with him.

Some of you should try humour sometimes.

Thisistheone. That was one of the stories I was referring to earlier. Think there was 7 minutes injury time if my memory is correct.

  19. Macfadden slithers through the net, who is left out there to replace the void left by lgunberg????

    Worrying times indeed

Need some Hun doom to lift the gloom

  20. Barcabhoy,

You are right about wee Bertie. He (and people like Johnny Giles at Leeds) could look after themselves and, in Bertie’s case look after the likes of Jinky. But he wasn’t, imo, like Greig (or that other ragtag, Souness). Greig’s whole game (against us) was based on his kicking us off the park. “Ra peepil” adored him for it. He deliberately appealed to those who espoused the anti-Catholic “ethos” that permeated that club. No, I have no respect or sympathy for him, even if wee Bertie or Billy McNeil do.
