Act before talk of shaming the club

1133

“I said to the players at half time that we were shaming the club at the moment and they had to go out and show some pride in the shirt”, the words of Neil Lennon to the BBC after the game on Saturday.

Pride in the shirt is a requirement any manager should ask of his team, and it is notable that the subsequent goal-scorers both have strong connections to the club, but it probably had little to do with the second half performance from Anthony Stokes, Charlie Mulgrew and our the impressive James Forrest.  Calls to pride are limited in what they can achieve, genuine talent is far more effective.

At the AGM on Friday and again in his post-match comments on Saturday, Neil alluded to the fragility of his own position.  Had the game finished 3-0 to Kilmarnock I think he would have walked away.  This would have been a great pity.

Neil is learning on the job. He was not gifted the benefits of experience without actually having to work through difficult times as a manager.  Before his thoughts turn to his own position, before our season is too far gone to save, he should recruit an experienced assistant.  Someone who knows the challenges of working with a disparate group of players, who can deal with the challenges of a demanding board and supporter base.

The need for a mentor was evident 18 months ago and is screamingly so now.  For the sake of Celtic, do the necessary.

An animal and a thug were the exact words that Billy McNeil used to describe the same JG.

    And they are/were never friends.

If you have deleted a post of mine because I called Barcabhoy a hun, i will not post again.

Now, you have deleted a post of mine for language.

    What language?

    I am entitled to know.

    Am i not?

  3. Does anybody know if the minutes/records of the AGM are published ? The young team isn’t progressing well without a quality backbone or quality old heads ? I’d like to know if there were concrete suggestions on the day for sorting the squad out.

But we haven`t had any managers who were part of an anti-Catholic establishment have we?”

I can only take people as i find them. If your position is that everyone who was employed by Rangers pre 1989 is a bigot, then we are not going to agree.

I have met many players and managers over the years. There are only 4 I would describe as outright bigots. 2 were Rangers players, one a Rangers Director and one a Celtic director.

None of them were John Greig. And no, I am not going to name any of them, as 2 of them are still alive

I have always had a theory that both sets of supporters tend to have an unhealthy dislike of the oppositions better players.

I have always thought the opposite. Celtic fans rated Baxter and Laudrop, for instance, and their fans rated Henryk and McGrain, for example.

What our fans dislike about John Greig (apart from being a 100% part of an anti Catholic Club) is that he is vastly over-rated. I promise you, he was not that good a player.

I agree with you. Take the current crop of Huns, I don’t mind Steve Davis because he’s a good footballer, and the only reason I don’t like Jelavic and Naismith because they are divers and cheats

  8. Paul 67, Hopefully others have said it. A mentor would come in and questions would need to be raised about who was in charge. Why not just appoint the mentor as manager and leave Neil to do some individual motivating with those that need it. I presume from your comments that you have resigned yourself to 4 in a row? We need a new manager that can do what it says on the tin.

I watched Neil Warnock last night and felt a wee glow for the guy. Hes a traditional manager in the glamour league bringing a bit of reality to the falsehoods they currently enjoy. We could do with a hard realist.

A pity that James McFadden has signed for Everton. We could have done with him anoll!

The facts are he was part of an anti-Catholic establishment and as such I will have no sympathy for him.

Would you have sympathy for him if he was part of an anti-black establishment?

  12. My favourite Rangers players were Daniel Prodan, Kuznetsov, Rozenthal, G’uivarch and Jonas Thern

Took millions out of their club and contributed nothing to their success.

We should put up statues to them :-)

  13. My view of John Greg: Never knew him so don’t know if he is a good or a bad person, wont praise him, won’t castigate him until he is caught singing something he shouldn’t or make a prince arry type remark or dress choice…

Howeva… It is funny. A while back Bain froze 500k of their cash/assets, then a legal firm seized another 1/2 million and now two board members resign. The words rat, ship and sinking come to mind…..

Ah wonder how Fascist Fascist is taking this? I hope they are tacking it on the chin like we have had to for years.

Incidentally how do we feel about the creatin who got the jail for disgusting comments? I think he deserved it on account of the religious and racial motivation however as their was no direct threat we have to be worried about how our government use these laws in future, yesterday a sick guy who harassed the bereaved and tried to pass it as “trolling” (really trolling is funny/annoying/childish but is NOT disgustingly abusive), today a turd with prior convictions but tomorrow me or you for disliking a certain politician or supporting a group that we are conventionally not meant to (like the PLO, hamas or other rebels around the world fighting for an end to their subjection by foreign imperial malevolent invaders or those backed by such groups…).

Glad Fox is gone. I would write what I think about him but that would breach blog rules and probably “hate crime” laws that once were used to punish racists and thugs (like the guy done today) but may now be used to target those with an opinion the authorities don’t like. What I will say is he was a crap minster for his community, he got faster broadband big wow, I am sure that will put food in the mouth of the starving or help the homeless to rebuild their shattered lives… Seriously pro Israeli politicians should be allowed to stand however they should be banned from being anywhere near the defence or foreign office. They do not represent us. We the people reject Zionist evils, free free Palestine, Remala, west bank Gazza its about time we globalized the inta-fadah, long live palestine long live Gazza.

I love the OWS protesters contrary to popular belief on fox news they are the ones with dignity and class, the tea party patrismucks are the ones with bad body odor, questionable morals and little political intelligence, Stalin once said “useful idiots”.

Why are they not arrested? Because they don’t oppose the global corporations who not only rape other countries lands but also exploit the workers of the united states and export jobs somewhere else because they can get someone else to do it for cheaper. Murder union organizers, and republicans expect to be treated as humans? Mabye when they start acting like ones they will deserve to be treated as such.

Makes me lol at themselves thinking they are “conservatives” I do not like torries but a torry is not a “clasical liberal”, torries where in some ways to the left of classical liberals economically. A torry is not anti gay or ethnic minority, no their is a different word for that and it begins with f…..

    Barcabhoy,

You are right about wee Bertie. He (and people like Johnny Giles at Leeds) could look after themselves and, in Bertie’s case look after the likes of Jinky. But he wasn’t, imo, like Greig (or that other ragtag, Souness). Greig’s whole game (against us) was based on his kicking us off the park. “Ra peepil” adored him for it. He deliberately appealed to those who espoused the anti-Catholic “ethos” that permeated that club. No, I have no respect or sympathy for him, even if wee Bertie or Billy McNeil do.”

Bertie was clearly a much better player. That wasnt really my point. All clubs have had players who’s primary attribute was that they were robust, or physical or were the enforcers for the team.

I wonder if any of these guys ever saw Bobo play. He was hardly ever going to be mistaken for Lubo , who could also look after himself , or Paul McStay

What we are missing in my view is a couple of players like Bobo.

  15. Report from the Man City site. Apart from pleasant reading as regards the score, it is like a beacon of honesty compared to Scottish Media reports! Just shows that we really are NOT paranoid.

“City’s dream of reaching the NextGen Series knockout stages was cruelly washed away in the wind and rain of Hyde as a smart Celtic side condemned the Blues to a third successive defeat.

After being pipped by Barcelona then beaten in Marseille, Andy Welsh’s lads simply had to win this tie to have a hope of squeezing into second spot and making the New Year play-offs.

Instead they were left rock bottom of a fiendish Group One, with the suprisingly slick Glasgow outfit breaking their own duck in weather more suited to ducks than playing constructive football.

City started well enough, and took the lead after ten minutes, although they had plenty of help from the visiting defence as the conditions caused some measure of havoc.

Harry Bunn swept past Michael Miller down the left and fired in a workaday shot that Robbie Thomson saved, but he spilled the ball and skipper Marcus Fraser couldn’t clear his line quickly enough.

Joan Roman took the initiative, nipped in smartly and poked the ball over the line to put the Blues in a perfect position so early in the game. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to last.

Celtic had pace and not a little skill, and a couple of minutes later Calum McGregor fired a warning with a fierce shot that Gunn managed to tip against his left-hand post.

The Scots pulled level after 25 minutes, and again there was a real element of poor defending in the goal as City skipper Karim Rekik stranded his keeper with a poor back pass to allow John Herron in.

The visitors looked to have a good penalty shout turned down when Tony Watt went sprawling under a challenge from Ellis Plummer.

That was after 38 minutes. A minute later Celtic were ahead with a powerful header by Paul George from a corner, and in all fairness City could not complain given the way Celtic had played.

Worse was to come for the Blues, who replaced defender Ellis Plummer with Luke Coulson at half time, as George shot Celtic further ahead just before the hour mark.

The credit went to Dylan McGeouch, who took possession from a short corner then weaved through City’s defence on the right flank before setting up George at the near post.”

Suarez was the instigator with a surging run from midfield, then his one-two with Roman allowed the Spaniard to penetrate the area and curl a lovely left-footer round goalkeeper Thomson.

But Celtic were not to be denied, and three minutes later a breakaway ended with George setting up Watt to fire across Gunn for a fourth goal that left City with too much to do.

Roman tested Thomson with a free kick that the Celtic keeper was happy to punch clear, but there was no arguing that the Scots had been the more resilient and incisive on the night.

Welsh said: “We’re obviously disappointed . At this level we have to defend better than that. We have to be brighter and sharper. But we have to be positive and learn from this.”

    Can’t let this go by.

John Greig was not just a hard player, but somone who could use both feet, was a top class sweeper (Franz Beckanbauer was a great admirer, ask him) and a defensive midfielder yet scored 120 goals for Rangers.

Polish FA confirmed today that the referees will not judge the games untill the end of this year.

Before FA made decision referee Liczmanski said to the media:

-I must confess that I made two msitakes, very big mistakes in that game. I can’t explain why I made them. I probably did see these situations from wrong angles and could not see them well. Whatever reason, I can blame only myself. I want to apologize to Jagiellonia players, to all supporters. I know that I changed final result of the game. I say I’m sorry, let it be I”M SORRY.
