Act before talk of shaming the club

1133

“I said to the players at half time that we were shaming the club at the moment and they had to go out and show some pride in the shirt”, the words of Neil Lennon to the BBC after the game on Saturday.

Pride in the shirt is a requirement any manager should ask of his team, and it is notable that the subsequent goal-scorers both have strong connections to the club, but it probably had little to do with the second half performance from Anthony Stokes, Charlie Mulgrew and our the impressive James Forrest.  Calls to pride are limited in what they can achieve, genuine talent is far more effective.

At the AGM on Friday and again in his post-match comments on Saturday, Neil alluded to the fragility of his own position.  Had the game finished 3-0 to Kilmarnock I think he would have walked away.  This would have been a great pity.

Neil is learning on the job. He was not gifted the benefits of experience without actually having to work through difficult times as a manager.  Before his thoughts turn to his own position, before our season is too far gone to save, he should recruit an experienced assistant.  Someone who knows the challenges of working with a disparate group of players, who can deal with the challenges of a demanding board and supporter base.

The need for a mentor was evident 18 months ago and is screamingly so now.  For the sake of Celtic, do the necessary.

I did meet Cathac in Sean Ogs.

I’ve been on this site for 6 years now and Paul 67 has rarely got the 4 words in the right order.

You don’t have to call me darling, darling, but you never eve call me by my name.

  2. The governing body for European football told Sion last week to settle their dispute at the Court of Arbitration for Sport, and it has now revealed what could happen if the international tribunal rules in the Swiss side’s favour.

A Uefa statement reads: “The first option assumes the cancellation of all previous games in Group I of the Uefa Europa League, and for a set of new games to be played within a group of five, following the rules of the former Uefa Cup group stage with teams playing against each other either at home or away. These matches could then be played between 24 November and 22 December.

“The second option allows for the integration of FC Sion into Group I as an additional fifth team, but that the results and points of the games already played in the group remain. Eight additional matches would have to be played, starting at the end of November and finishing in February 2012.

In fairness, I only saw him in the flesh against Celtic. Against Jimmy Johnstone, Mr Greig certainly did not look top class! I had not realised he had scored so many goals. He was obviously better in his general career than he was in the games I saw him play .

If I used foul or abusive language I would accept Paul’s admonotion and would apologise immediately.

I did not use foul or abusive language.

    I called a regular poster a hun.

He was imo talking like a hun lover.

I have asked Paul to email me to discuss.

No emails recieved at this point.

Not that i care either way, but you also called me a hun and a f*d. Intemperate abuse , especially the laughable idea that I am a hun, has never bothered me. It says much more about you than it says about me.

This is however Pauls site, and his rules. In other words he’s the boss. He doesn’t owe anyone an explanation. He devotes a huge amount of unpaid time to provide this site. He shouldnt have to explain every move he makes

  6. On a lighter note, or maybe not depending on your point of view. We had the following flyer posted through our letterbox on Saturday. One side printed in German and the other in English, it was advertising the opening of a new club locally. It boldly proclaimed “Pay once and do it as often as you can.”

I showed it to my nearest and dearest before I threw it out. Just before I consigned it to the trash I thought to myself “I did it once and I’ve being paying ever since!” :-)

    Bloke…..

A number of posters posted the asterisked f word after my deleted post, with impunity.

    Why me?

  9. The appointment of Neil Lennon without an experienced head beside him is simply mis-management. 2 obvious candidates for me wouldve been Tommy Craig or Billy Stark

  10. How many of those goals were penalties, offside or based on instructions given to the ref so he wouldn’t be downgraded?

  11. Great night at the U19s. Great to meet Vmhan, TonCheDan and Googybhoy.

We had a brilliant laugh, although SwanseaBhoy missed most of the game because he could scarcely stop tweeting. The bhoys from Liverpool Packie Bonner were magic. Two of my children were with me and wanted to be where the singing was. Then at the end it was brilliant when the young Hoops came to shake hands with the Celtic fans.

It was a very good performance in difficult conditions.

Paul George and Tony Watt were the stand-outs. Tony is a big lhad.

Most commonly heard shout from his team-mates: “Tony, pass it.”

This was what you could hear Stevie Frail tell them the whole time from the touchline too.

The Bhoys are learning to play the proper way.

  12. The Singing Detective on

Would be very keen to see WGS back assisting Lennie……he was clearly a gifted coach, and his exuberance with gravitas will lift the team, especially as he won’t have the burden of being the No.1.

I cannot see Gordon having any interest in managing Celtic again in the near future.I do expect him to manage in the Championship or the EPL next season.

He is a thoroughly honourable chap, and one of Life’s gentlemen. He sensibly chose a balance to his life, alternating leisure periods,TV punditry, with onerous grind of football management.

I wouldn’t know what TV pundit commitments he has…almost certainly busy with the Euro Finals…and maybe also with the Africa Cup in Jan/Feb.

He likes to mix-and-match…we should grab him if he is available…even on a part-time basis,if it was more suitable for him.He is a real student of football, and is always looking to pass on new ideas.

Remember that Gordon had Ron Atkinson acting as a mentor, for his first year at Coventry, even though he had acted as the Big Man’s assistant in the previous season.

If he did agree to help us out….forget this Idea of a mentor….Gordon would see himself as a Coaching Consultant….he is a New-Age Footballing Person, with a Portfolio Career Plan.

Indeed,Gordon was one of the finest Scottish players in my lifetime….one of the ones who slipped our net…I remember how pleased I was to hear that he was being signed from Dundee for £40,000,only for the deal to fall through at the last moment. He was ruined playing for Man Utd,having to adjust his role, to accommodate a midfield built around Captain Marvel,a much inferior player,in my estimation.

Don’t let him slip through the net again!

(When the issue of a mentor was first muted a year ago, folk posting on here intimated that David Hay considered himself ‘retired’….is this still the case?)

I remember Ronald De boer being knocked into the middle of next week by Bobo. Bobo’s role was to intimidate.

When you think we have a man in the team with similar physical attributes but has the heart of a chicken

    Id take Bobo any day”

Completely agree. We wouldnt be getting embarassed with Bobo and a Davie Hay in our team. In fact Martin’s team had a majority of players who wouldn’t take any nonsense from the opposition. Only Stan ,Jackie and Agathe played by Marquiss of Queensberry

rules. The rest would kick their granny for an advantage.

  14. If Rangers were in our position on the supposed Sions solutions I am sure they would lap up the offer of additional. Surely even our Baord would stick two fingers in the general direction of Uefa should Sion be reintroduced. What a farse. Never known it to be this bad since the big bully at school kept getting megged at worldy and we had to reinstate him as a 3rd team in the world cup final.

Hopefully some long awaited comfort for the families of the 96!

Comparing Carter with Nixon would be as valid as comparing John Reid with John Smith.

Carter is nearly 90 and still works incredibly hard on good causes. He was in Haiti helping out after the earthquake. Which UK politician in their 80’s did that, or one in their 70’s , or 60’s

We agreed to scroll by each other a long time ago but I was impressed when you took the trouble to post when I mentioned the other week I have a drink problem.

But I’m genuinely puzzled how you can never have heard of John Greig. Its like a Hun never having heard of Danny McGrain (though Greig couldn’t lace his boots, he is a Hun legend).

My only conclusion is that you are very young, of only started following Celtic relatively recently and have never looked back at our history.

Just curious, not having a go.

    Hail Hail

(ps I still scroll past most of your posts except when there is a game on)

  20. As a football aficionado I didn’t have a lot of time for John Greig, but the night at Hampden in 1965, with a couple of mins to go as he ran into the Italian penalty box an made a wee Bhoy ecstatic….that memory will live long…BTW Jock Stein was the manager, he rated Greig and I think he knew more than me about football.

Truth4767, How long have you liked the Glsagow Rainjoors and do you get yer photie in the local paper with the goat or are you one of the chaps who hangs at the back making the black ball decisions with the goat and the meat purveyor?
