Agents talk to the media when they are not talking to Celtic

1126

One of the problems of doing your business discretely is that if and when agents or selling clubs publicise your interest in their player, media attention has a tendency to attribute too much focus on the most recent name revealed.  Teemu Pukki is a player Celtic have been trailing for some months but the fact that his agent yesterday revealed their interest is no indication that he enjoys any pre-eminence over others strikers being considered.  If anything, briefings from the agent are an indication of the opposite.

Reports yesterday that Pukki is backup in case a bid for Finnbogason fails are also wide of the mark; this is not the active path Celtic are working on.  There are (at least) two other strikers under consideration, neither of whom have directly or indirectly leaked the discussions.

Nothing sells media adverts like transfer ‘news’, which is fair enough, but news is easier to find than the actual story. This is a ‘no news’ article, the easiest of all. No panicking in the back…

Good morning friends from a drizzly, breezy and grey EK.

Football fest today – Aberdeen v Celtic and then EKFC v Selkirk. After my run, of course.

BTW – what about Mo Farrah last night, eh!

I think Neil will play Brown today even of 30% fit. we says he does want to be 6 behind the sheep. Might move can do into the MD but that leaves him short at the back, Efe in midfield?

  12. Top of the morning to you all from a grey foreboding Fife, where the rain clouds are tumbling towards Aberdeen.

There is something special about the trip to Bon Accord. In the past we have travelled north after gruelling midweek matches and held our own and I hope we manage a win today.

Today’s game will be just as special as the ones that preceded it but one thing that won’t be the same is the journalist’s cover of the game. We can’t expect anything like this in the Herald on Monday:-

    ………………………………………………………

    Celtic cast caution aside

The day of any big match starts early. Queen Street was full long before breakfast and Celtic players were signing autographs almost before their eyes were fully opened writes Ian Archer.

It was a special day even for Jock Stein, who toyed restlessly with the rather pleasant plate of sole that British Rail provided for us as the burns and bunkers of Carnoustie slipped by lit by a piercing sun.

“This is what it should be all about,” he said. “Big matches, big occasions. Sometimes I go home after we have beaten a club by a big score and ask myself what precisely we have achieved. Up here a draw would be a good result, but even if we get beaten I won’t be depressed. I’ll think that we have given something to the game.”

The talk turned to smaller leagues, a better format for the Scottish football scene. It was at Pittodrie three hours later that the vast possibilities that the game so often squanders became so obvious.

The gates were shut before the match even started, leaving the 36,000 who had come early short of breathing space but full of expectancy for a game that every season now lives up to its billing as a moving High Noon situation.

Celtic’s victory does not, of course, ensure them of their eighth successive championship and Eddie Turnbull at Easter Road will have a significant say in the outcome of the title. But the win once more shows the rest of Scottish football that Stein’s team create their own standards of excellence.

Three days before they had thrown themselves at Ujpest Dosza with such utter disregard for their legs and lungs that they could have been excused asking for a day of rest instead of a visit to Pittodrie. Yet once again, they were prepared to risk physical exhaustion in pursuit of a mere two points.

The pattern was set early and showed that Stein had spotted a basic alteration in Aberdeen’s style this season. In the last two years, these sides have slogged away in midfield, looking for the half chance that can be turned into a huge reward.

This time, sensing that Aberdeen have defensive problems, Celtic forgot their caution and Alex Willoughby was soon facing Callaghan and Lennox bearing down on him intent on proving that it is not always possible to play a winger disguised as a full back.

Lennox baffled him with speed to set up the first goal for Deans and Callaghan crossed for the second, taken well by Macari. Both times Clark got his fingers to the ball when he really had no right to do so.

On the reasonable assumption that no side in Europe can give Celtic two goals of a start Aberdeen will have been forgiven for making their excuses and asking the referee to put his watch forward eight hours in front of schedule. They remained loose in defence and Willie Young’s injury after half an hour gave them even less cause for hope.

  15. Morning from the pleasantly fresh Chilterns, a bit more summer would be good though.

Don’t think I’ll be able to catch the game today, which is a pity I think it might be a cracker.

Early doors but it’s nice to see Aberdeen looking competitive again, saw the Partick match yesterday evening, it was followed by a Documentary on the Dons ’83 European run, good stuff, a team packed with talented Scots. Big Jock was out there supporting them in the final as they beat Di Stefano’s Real Madrid.

There was something great about Scottish football then, would be nice to see a bit of that coming back.

Still our Season is up and running and we should have to much strength and depth for them no matter who plays.

the great thing about Scottish football back then was it wasn’t totally bent on making sure 1 team won everything and nothing else mattered, Everything is connected, Utd, Dons, Hearts, Hibs greats are things of legend and the clubs may never hit those heights again thanks to sevco, ,msm and the Old SFA, there are good things about scottish football, But with a change of the guard who knows what will happen, St johnstone and the National game on Wed were both signs of improvement. Scottish football is in a decent place again just now and the reason is the whole thing is not geared to suit 1 team.

As long as Tony keeps his poor performances for international games that’s OK by me. I don’t want any Celtic player play international football for anyone, we pay the wages and end up with injuries.

After what happened to John Kennedy I applaud Watt’s (avoid injury) attitude.

The funnier thing is within the article they actually mention Stockbridge and kings warning and sally sating we should listen to these guys and then he comes out with that nonsense this morning. I don’t think they will ever be the same again, No matter what the sfa do to help them, Still at it last week, first goal offside two pens out of nothing and it will continue until they eventually make it back to top flight, My worry is our boards silence, The old adage about all it takes for evil to win for a good men to do nothing (paraphrase) but you get the gist.
