AGM report, Living Wage, Rory Bremner, show us the deeds

1098

Celtic’s Annual General Meeting, held at Celtic Park today, was a livelier event than usual.  The board received a hostile response to their refusal to back a resolution to provide all staff with at least the Living Wage.  Several impassioned points were made from the floor, which convinced chairman, Ian Bankier, to dispense with his prepared response and provide answers to specific questions.

The vote went against the resolution based on the proxy votes cast by the chairman but the board have never lost the floor so convincingly on any prior issue.

Resolution 12, encouraging the club to purse the game’s authorities on matters relating to the governance of liquidated Rangers was adjourned indefinitely by the requisitioners.  On proposing the adjournment, a spokesman for the requisitioners (our own Morrissey23) explained that they had met the club and received information not previously known, and that further meetings were planned.

Fergus McCann made an unexpected contribution to the AGM by email through the chairman, extoling the virtues of financial director, Eric Riley, who he commended for 19 years’ service in pursuing Celtic’s interests.  Fergus asked for, and got, an applause for Eric Riley, which resulted in the first unanimous show of hands to re-elect a director I have seen at a Celtic AGM.

AGM questions can be a tortuous affair but they were on the money this year.  We had poetry, questions about financial governance including a question as to whether the club owns all of it’s perceived property assets.  Ian Bankier confirmed it did, before planting his tongue in his cheek to insist “I’m not going to show you the deeds”.

When one shareholder expressed frustration that a new Scottish club is pretending to be a now liquidated club, chief executive, Peter Lawwell, retorted, “Rory Bremner can pretend to be Tony Blair”.

Sorry for the tardy reply, had to sleep.

Thanks, I look forward to hearing how this develops.

I hope Auldheids suggestion that an email will be sent to those who backed the resolution is done, open communication will keep that support going.

Otherwise people like me will feel disenfranchised from the process and it becomes another behind the scenes process with few knowing what is going on.

Without breaking the confidence and telling you explicitly what was done, I can’t be any more clear, in fact I think this might be close to the bone, consider all the implication in my last post and read the resolution again :o) hopefully a light will shine :o)

  9. Top of the morning to you all from Fife where, though it is dry, the wind is fairly scudding the grey clouds away to the east.

Normally my Saturday would begin with a walk in the country, but recently I have been unable to do this as I have been travelling to Little France to see my son who has had major surgery in the Royal Infrimary.

I don’t normally give too much detail of my family, or their troubles, preferring to hide behind the cloak of anonymity of Big Nan, however events in the Scottish Parliament earlier in the week blew whatever cover I had.

This week has convinced me of what a boon this forum is. I had some idea that it was a good place where decent folk of all shades exchanged diverse views, but didn’t realise just how strong a branch of a Celtic family we are.

Like all families, we laugh, cry, and argue together, there is a good streak of the charitable ethos of our founder still running in the veins, but most importantly there is a basic fairness that comes to the fore when wreckers try to cause division by attacking one of us unreasonably.

For almost a lifetime I have been aware that Masonic chancers, often sectarian in their outlook (as opposed to decent freemasons) have blighted the lives of many in the engineering industry I worked in.

In retirement and with no financial or business pressures to constrain me I have been able to challenge this organisation, a body that I see as the very antithesis of meritocracy, and I did this unsuccessfully in 2000 and again this year in the hope that this taboo topic can come under scrutiny and reform.

The fact that many of the 3,116 supporters from my petition came from this site was heartening for me, especially considering the air of menace that attaches itself to the Craft.

However the level of support I received from CQN after I had addressed the Public Petitions Committee on Tuesday simply exceeded my wildest expectations. Some of the many compliments I received were tinged with relief that I had not let the side down, again like elders judging a younger family member!

So, though I have tried to thank all those who directed comments towards me I am going to have to spend less time on the site and would take this opportunity to say thank you to one and all for your support. I have been complimented by Oxford scholars, academics in the law, law students, all sorts of people, but the most treasured plaudit’s were those posted on this site. Thank you again.

P.S. I should have reported the reason for spending less time on CQN was the good news that I brought my bhoy (Celtic SB/Shareholder) Kevin home yesterday and he is staying with us to convalesce and hopefully make a full recovery.

P.P.S. Breaking story and it’s more good news! The postman has just delivered the most generous gift from a Hebridean poster on this site. 2 lg Black and 1 lg White McLeod’s of Stornoway puddings, plus 2 pkts of Hot Smoked salmon. Now if this doesn’t prove we are more than just a set of internet bampots supporting more than just a club I don’t know what would.

The “adjournment” word — remember that the AGM, the resolution and all that stuff is goverend by the formal language of the law– a real pain in the arse sometimes— which is why I am on here trying to explain as much as I can.

In the drafts I actually wrote “continued”– a court term– as opposed to adjourned and it was changed at the suggestion of Celtic’s lawyers.

    Tony Donnelly

It would be going too far to say that the board have said ” it is ok lads we have this covered” or that the responses given by the SFA are ” acceptable” in any way.

The fact is– and I chose my words very carefully here—- some of us think the SFA response is CRAP!

Further, believe it or not, there are some who have access to more information, perhaps carried out more research, and possibly have more in depth knowledge about certain matters than the Celtic board and their advisers.

Therefore it is better we work with them and share that knowledge.

To be honest– it may come to nothing– then again…………

Once again I would urge everyone to read what was read out yesterday and on that isssue conentrate on the fruitful discussions and the bit where Ian Bankier states that at the meetings the board gained a greater understanding of the shareholders concerns.

Those words were not an accident.

  11. in a poor England side FF seems to have done well enough. some perspective would not go a miss in England.

same problems as sevco supporters if you ask me. i.e. against all the evidence presented they continue to believe they are relevant in a football sense.

  12. While I am, like every Celtic supporter, I presume, in favour of the Living Wage, I hope the Board is sceptical and wary of the Celtic Trust, who are far too obviously politically motivated, imo. We are supposed to be inclusive, and that, imo, includes all shades of political opinion. The far left republicans reflect only one section of the Celtic support and, imo, only a small part.

It will be very interesting to see whether PL sticks or twists on this matter.

Does he apologize for alluding to the truth or risk “social unrest” by being unrepentant?

This could, and should, be a line in the sand moment. The problem is if he now backs down the sevcovians will see it as official endorsement from Celtic.

This throwaway remark has actually far more riding on it now than PL would surely ever have intended.

I wonder when the significance of what he said kicked in.

  17. Goodness, no football but what a busy Celtic week!

Meanwhile, over in Sevconia the madness continues. Despite their FD revealing

they barely have cash to finish the season, I can reveal that their new CEO will

be paid in excess of £300,000 pa.

Quite modest, I suppose, in comparison with Sally’s £880,000.

  18. Fearless

Ta for your response, however I remain of the view it is greed on lots occasions which prevents the paying of the Living Wage. I worked in

London for a government quango and a condition on all Tenderers was that the must pay their staff as a minimum the London Living Wage; that definitely worked. There is absolutely no reason why Celtic should not pay this. They have people on over a million pounds a year and walking in the same door to go to work are personnel that don’t earn as much as seven quid an hour. As for the shite comment ‘this is their second job’

shows how far from real life these officers of the company are. Greed is the determining factor.

  20. Was pestered by ss jnr and hip wee pal into taking them to hampden last night. It was jnr’s first Scotland game, mostly due to me talking him out of previous requests. It was also a chance to see if things had moved on since my last visit.

When I was jnr’s age I went to many Scotland games. I even remember my first game against norn Ireland when I had my tartan tammy taken off me by bigger boys.

As I got older I became aware of the open resentment towards players of a hoops persuasion. I also remember the the rangers fans turning up with their club scarves.

The previous last game I went to. Argentina? Brian McClair was continuously boo’d and Roy Aitken was jeered coming on as a sub.

Fast forward to last night and jnr first experience. We took our seats in the “Celtic end” and guess what. Two seats along there’s a young guy sitting wearing a sevco scarf! The three guys in front of us stood up to applaud the teams being read out only to stop when Broony and Charlie’s names were read out.

To be fair the sevconian in a scarf was taken to task by a couple of boys behind him. They were asking him what team’s scarf was it anyway.

I think jnr last night “got” my reluctance to take him Scotland games.

I asked him later how he enjoyed his experience, he replied “it was good to have a night out with ma dad, but the game was rubbish, and the crowd were worse”. Bless!

  22. Joe Filippis Haircut on

Billy Bhoy 05 I cant see wither its someones sole job or there third job matters one iota the Living wage is the very least Celtic should be paying there staff. The fact that they dont shows how tight fisted the Board is with money of course until it comes to paying themselves. H.H.

my friend far to much emphasis is placed on what any celtic employee’s say or do in relation to sevco.

it is a fact that ranger fc are in the process of liquidation.

that secvo came into being in 2012, is all the proof that is required.

no matter what you, I and servo know as fact one of that 3 will always be in denial, irrespective of Celtic’s position.

it they become relevant to us and challenge us, we will treat them as a competitor until then

    Big Nan,

Today, in Ludges all over Scotland, sevcovians will be standing at the bar raging.

Instead of their intended cozy chat about how frustrating it is to have their season disrupted by these International weekends, what with being such a big team and all, they have now had their comfortable illustrations disrupted by two uppity Tim’s.

One has had the audacity to suggest, at a Celtic AGM, that they urny actually rangers and another has brazenly went into the parliament building and tried to rock the establishment boat.

  27. The ghost of Jim Farry is drifting in and out of the offices at Hampden Park, the SFA tried to ridicule a very determined wee Scots/Canadian but the stench of wrongdoing was so strong Fergus pursued him all the way and won a legendary victory, possibly our greatest ever off the park result.

I expect nothing less from our current custodians.

  28. Brogan Rogan Trevino and Hogan supports Oscar Knox, MacKenzie Furniss and anyone else who fights Neuroblastoma on

Guys can I just add something which is sparked by a comment made by Tony Donnelly 67 and this is not meant to be a criticism of anything Tony said in any way.

I do not believe for one second that Celtic PLC, The SFA, The SPFL, or any other club have the faintest idea about what to expect in relation to events occurring at Ibrox.

They are, in my opinion, absolutely in the dark about events and goings on over that way, how they will play out and what the fall out might be.

Clearly, it is something that many in Scottish Football have to be conscious off and in many respects the authorities have to prepare for as many eventualities as they can.

    But they just don’t know.
