AGM report, Living Wage, Rory Bremner, show us the deeds

1098

Celtic’s Annual General Meeting, held at Celtic Park today, was a livelier event than usual.  The board received a hostile response to their refusal to back a resolution to provide all staff with at least the Living Wage.  Several impassioned points were made from the floor, which convinced chairman, Ian Bankier, to dispense with his prepared response and provide answers to specific questions.

The vote went against the resolution based on the proxy votes cast by the chairman but the board have never lost the floor so convincingly on any prior issue.

Resolution 12, encouraging the club to purse the game’s authorities on matters relating to the governance of liquidated Rangers was adjourned indefinitely by the requisitioners.  On proposing the adjournment, a spokesman for the requisitioners (our own Morrissey23) explained that they had met the club and received information not previously known, and that further meetings were planned.

Fergus McCann made an unexpected contribution to the AGM by email through the chairman, extoling the virtues of financial director, Eric Riley, who he commended for 19 years’ service in pursuing Celtic’s interests.  Fergus asked for, and got, an applause for Eric Riley, which resulted in the first unanimous show of hands to re-elect a director I have seen at a Celtic AGM.

AGM questions can be a tortuous affair but they were on the money this year.  We had poetry, questions about financial governance including a question as to whether the club owns all of it’s perceived property assets.  Ian Bankier confirmed it did, before planting his tongue in his cheek to insist “I’m not going to show you the deeds”.

When one shareholder expressed frustration that a new Scottish club is pretending to be a now liquidated club, chief executive, Peter Lawwell, retorted, “Rory Bremner can pretend to be Tony Blair”.

Yes I do miss home sometimes, Celtic Park, the family, the Celtic family. Don’t miss the Hunnish atmosphere so prevalent in the pubs, clubs, workplaces, in the press, on the streets from June to October, on the radio,

I’m admittedly only 300 miles away but it may as well be 10,000 in respect of different environment.

I will retire back to Scotland though. Want to spend my later years around my family, friends and of course, the hoops.

If those damn nags would just understand they need to get home first, I’d take early retirement. I’m betting all the right horses, so it can only be the jockeys to blame:-)

The board gave us a video telling of the great charitable deeds they do. Well they do them with our money.

Tgry then go on to rell us thise who wotk at Celtic do it as a second job. Why does that mean they don’t have to pay the living wage.?

The second job works out at £5 per hour after tax …

You mean as reported in the papers? If so, yes, I noticed that. Mind you, it’s nonsense talk from the reporter ( s) concerned. I’ve heard enough from BRTH and Auldheid to make my own mind up. I know who I believe.

    Re the living wage argument.

First of all can I say that whether you agree with her delivery, tactics or whatever Jeanette Findlay is Celtic to the core. You will find her at St Mary’s this morning taking statements and giving up her own time to help the fellas that are facing trial in Amsterdam and her commitment to Celtic and social justice is unwavering and to be given immense respect.

Yesterday she made an impassioned and personal plea from the floor knowing she was going to lose an argument. However as Paul said in his header, she more or less unanimously carried the floor.

Not only that, her speech was given great recognition by Jim Spence on Radio Scotland and helped highlight and publicise the feelings of the floor against the decision of the board of the PLC.

Now, I suspect– I don’t know but I suspect— That a different tactic would be made in private discussion. Yesterday Jeanette did hint at some business reasons for applying the living wage, but this was set in and amongst the moral argument and the plea that to pay the living wage would be true to the roots of Walfrid.

However. this is a PLC and so there is an argument to say that you should talk to them in PLC speak.

So, the consequences of so alienating a support– and therefore a customer base— such as the Celtic which has a huge moral compass arising out of its roots, is that you will lose its trust and loyalty.

Losing you customers trust and loyalty is always bad for business and means a loss of revenue. Celtic supporters actively purchase from the club, spend money in its shops, and so on and so forth.

By not running with the living wage proposal — or at least not responding in a fashion other than the stated response — the board risk a commercial fall out which they cannot quantify but which is likely to happen.

That is not good governance as it does not seek to bridge any divide between customer and business, and it certainly tests as opposed to encouraging loyalty.

If retail is adversely affected as a result, then in turn this may well have a knock on effect in terms of the amount of revenue from club sponsors going forward.

At a time when the PLC are actively creating jobs with the development of the triangle– which in turn when completed will leave a whole new destinational experience involving yet more jobs– the savvy thing to do would to have embraced the motion and to have introduced the Living wage within a reasonable timescale.

That would have ticked all the emotional, moral and business boxes IMHO

Jeanette Finlay’s living wage speech was very good in my opinion. She is well versed in AGM protocol and her emotive words certainly hit the target.

However I agree that Jeanette lost points for making personal attacks on the board. This has happened at previous AGM’s and always makes me feel uneasy.

I voted in favour of Res 10 but also understand that Bankier could have retaliated with for example, NL being lower paid than every Epl Manager and probably a third tier Scottish one.

At the same time though Bankier scored an own goal with ‘many of our staff work here as a second job’….exactly Ian, think about that one.

At the points where things got a wee bit angry and fingers pointed with shouts if ‘shame’, my thoughts travelled five miles west and the up and coming AGM there. Now that one really should make ours look like a Vicar’s tea party by comparison. But we are too well aware how ‘the people’ think and operate. What’s the chances PL will get more stick than all the spivs combined?

Answer to your question is neither.

    Celtic — Rod

    Rangers PLC— Bait

SFA— Haddies ( and that was being polite )

    I. Fully behind the living wage proposals. I didn’t like the personal nature of :

“The rich men sitting up there decided they will not put in a commitment to pay this wage. How disgusting.

“The people who brought them their tea when they were making the decision are probably affected by that.

“It is one of the grubbiest, most divisive decisions taken by a Celtic board”

  21. I often wonder what goes through the minds of Brother Walfrid’s babies….

    coin or Compassion?

    status or Sensitivity?

  24. BRTH – agree, the founding spirit of the club and the commercial imperative of a PLC are not mutually exclusive.

The minimum commercial effect of a policy change would be ‘damage avoidance’. With some energy & imagination it could be transformed into a magnet for new customers and a powerful catalyst to grow share of wallet with existing customers.

From a moral perspective, I agree with those who feel that the Club’s current position on this topic fails to live up to the founding spirit of Celtic.

  25. I remember going to Dundee in the 80s and Brian McClair scoring 4 before being benched for the next game with a certain Jim Melrose taking his place.

Gotta go shortly, but final point on the matter from me, for now.

Since the board members seem driven by money, perhaps a call from Jeanette ( for whom I have a great admiration I may add) to all Celtic season ticket holders, supporters and shareholders, to refrain from purchasing any merchandise, catering products, programmes etc until the board reconsidered their statement, may have struck more of a sense of panic into them.

I feel a bit low as I like meeting up with Matt. If you have any time off next week I’ll come into Glasgow and we can head over to Sharkeys for a drink.
