AGM report, Living Wage, Rory Bremner, show us the deeds

1098

Celtic’s Annual General Meeting, held at Celtic Park today, was a livelier event than usual.  The board received a hostile response to their refusal to back a resolution to provide all staff with at least the Living Wage.  Several impassioned points were made from the floor, which convinced chairman, Ian Bankier, to dispense with his prepared response and provide answers to specific questions.

The vote went against the resolution based on the proxy votes cast by the chairman but the board have never lost the floor so convincingly on any prior issue.

Resolution 12, encouraging the club to purse the game’s authorities on matters relating to the governance of liquidated Rangers was adjourned indefinitely by the requisitioners.  On proposing the adjournment, a spokesman for the requisitioners (our own Morrissey23) explained that they had met the club and received information not previously known, and that further meetings were planned.

Fergus McCann made an unexpected contribution to the AGM by email through the chairman, extoling the virtues of financial director, Eric Riley, who he commended for 19 years’ service in pursuing Celtic’s interests.  Fergus asked for, and got, an applause for Eric Riley, which resulted in the first unanimous show of hands to re-elect a director I have seen at a Celtic AGM.

AGM questions can be a tortuous affair but they were on the money this year.  We had poetry, questions about financial governance including a question as to whether the club owns all of it’s perceived property assets.  Ian Bankier confirmed it did, before planting his tongue in his cheek to insist “I’m not going to show you the deeds”.

When one shareholder expressed frustration that a new Scottish club is pretending to be a now liquidated club, chief executive, Peter Lawwell, retorted, “Rory Bremner can pretend to be Tony Blair”.

  7. PETER LAWWELL just couldn’t get enough.

The way the Celtic AGM went yesterday he’d gladly have sat in the Kerrydale Suite all afternoon.

As it is the club’s annual general meeting lasted just short of two and a half hours.

In that time Lawwell shelved one potentially tricky resolution demanding the club go for the SFA over their handling of Rangers.

Chief executive Lawwell and his Hoops board also manoeuvred their way out of another confrontational situation over their policy of paying some staff the minimum wage.

Other than that? In the Q&A session one shareholder wanted Neil Lennon to sit in the stand every week rather than patrol the touchline.

The same supporter then asked why Charlie Mulgrew — a deadball expert — took corner kicks when he should be trying to get himself on the end of one.

With various jibes at Rangers dished out throughout the meeting, like lollipops at a kids party, Lawwell virtually had the crowd eating out of his hand.

Little wonder he later reflected on the meeting by admitting he’s had worse days.

Lawwell said: “Generally, I’m sure every club in Britain would be happy and content with that AGM.

“If those resolutions are all we have to bother ourselves with, and I’m not saying they’re not important, I’m sure there are many clubs in Britain at the moment who’d be satisfied with that.

“The club here, frankly, without sounding too conceited or boastful, arguably has never been in better shape.

MOVING UP … Celts in good shape says Lawwell

“We have a fantastic young manager and management team with both ambition and ability.

“We have a great squad, great scouting and a great academy.

“We have young executives, faces you don’t know, who are dynamic in delivering for the fans.

“I think we’re modern, progressive, relevant, with a business plan and strategy which is not dependant on any other football club. And we’re delivering on that.

“So we’re moving on and that’s the positivity that should come from today, not some issues surrounding three resolutions which, as I say, most clubs in Britain would be happy to deal with if that was their only problems.”

With their finances in tip-top condition, Celtic have plenty to be pleased about.

Chairman Ian Bankier even spoke of how the current Scottish champions could soon become UNSTOPPABLE.

Bankier said: “The board’s aim is to continue doing what we’re doing. We have a definite plan and financial model. It’s about living within our means but doing the best we can in terms of spending on firepower.

“I would love to see this club become one of the main players on the world stage.

“There is a tremendous romance attached to the club, we put smiles on people’s faces all over the world, we’ve got a tremendous attitude to life, humour and social responsibility.

“The momentum we’ve built up in the last three to five years is formidable. With luck on our side and success on the field, we will be nothing short of unstoppable.”

Lawwell told shareholders Celtic were planning for the future and he predicts a restructure of European football within five years and says the Hoops are ready to embrace that.

Lawwell added: “I think there is enough going on there that within five years you could be looking at some form of structural change in the game.

“The most immediate change is this regional league prospect, where Russia and Ukraine are talking about merging two domestic leagues together and there are other Eastern European countries that are looking at that.

“In terms of the Europa Cup there is potentially regional qualification which would expand the Europa Cup. So there are a few things that are moving along.”

The only real uncomfortable moment of the meeting came when Lawwell and the Parkhead board were verbally skewered by Celtic Supporters’ Trust spokes- person Jeanette Findlay.

She demanded to know why the club hadn’t adopted a ‘living wage’ policy for the company’s lowest-paid staff. In a speech which brought loud applause and an ovation from many in the room, she hit out: “When the plc board decided not to take action, it was the lowest point in my Celtic supporting career. The rich men sitting up there decided they will not put in a commitment to pay this wage. How disgusting.

“The people who brought them their tea when they were making the decision are probably affected by that.

“It is one of the grubbiest, most divisive decisions taken by a Celtic board.”

Lawwell hit back: “It’s a very complicated issue. What I can say is this club is a first-class employer. I don’t think any club or company in Britain look after their staff better than we do.”

Arguably the Celtic board’s biggest victory came when they managed to shelve the resolution which demanded Celtic push for UEFA to investigate the way the SFA handled Rangers’ liquidation and the awarding of a new licence to play.

Lawwell added: “We spoke to the requisitioners before the meeting and they agreed to adjourn the resolution definitely. It’s now off the agenda.”

  8. PETER LAWWELL reckons league reconstruction has saved Scottish football.

The Hoops chief executive believes the new structure has given the game “a degree of stability”.

Speaking at Celtic’s AGM, he said: “It’s really drawn a line, and it’s given us something new.

“A major benefit was the redistribution of finance from the top league going down to the lower leagues which I think was a great show of solidarity for Scottish football.

“Hopefully that will give its benefits in terms of the quality that will be in the new Championship.

“I think the line is drawn now so we know where we are, but it’s not the end.”

Lawwell admits Celtic have a duty to themselves and the national game to continue to explore alternative playing environments.

He added: “Everyone in Scottish football has got to look at the challenges that face them and come up with a strategic plan that will maximise the potential of Scottish football going forward.”

Celtic have long held ambitions to play in a wider arena but they were central in discussions on merging the two Scottish leagues in the summer with the help of a redistribution of funds to second-tier clubs.

When asked if Celtic would continue to explore other avenues, he said: “Yes I think we have a duty to do that, not just for Celtic but for Scottish football. The way the world has gone in terms of media values, which are driving the success of major leagues around the world, in a country of five million people it is very difficult to bridge that gap.

“So I think we all have a responsibility to continually look at the playing environment in Europe and make sure that if there is change, and I think there will be change in the coming years, that Celtic and Scottish football play a part in that.”

The SPFL recently signed a deal with a Chinese online TV station, which forms part of a 10-year agreement expected to bring in £2million a year for the clubs.

And Lawwell is eager to explore further opportunities in the Far East.

He said: “We’re looking at possible partnerships around academies, we’re looking at partnerships around player development and possibly social projects over there so in the longer term the Celtic brand, if you like, gets profile and exposure, not only in China but other markets.”

Chairman Ian Bankier declared even more ambitious goals on the international arena.

Bankier said: “I would love to see this club become one of the main players on the world stage of modern football.

“I think there is tremendous romance and expectation about Celtic Football Club. I think we put smiles on people’s faces everywhere and in every continent of the world.

“I think we have a tremendous attitude to life, I think we have humour, I think we have a sense of social responsibility, I think we have great people in here, I think we have the best fans in the world bar none and I think the combination of that is unstoppable.

“I think the momentum that we have built over the last three to five years is powerful. I think if we get lady luck on our side and we meet with more success on the field, because it is all about football success, if we can do that and continue the way we are going we will be nothing short of unstoppable.”

Lawwell also revealed he was still awaiting responses from the authorities after making an application to Glasgow City Council to develop a safe standing area at Celtic Park.

  9. RANGERS want the SFA to probe Peter Lawwell’s “Rory Bremner” remark about them at the Celtic AGM.

The Hoops chief executive made the comments yesterday after a shareholder spoke out on Gers’ history.

The shareholder was up in arms about Gers’ claims to have unbroken traditions despite liquidation.

Parkhead powerbroker Lawwell joked: “Rory Bremner can pretend to be Tony Blair.”

Afterwards, he explained: “That was the lady that stood up, talking about pretending.

“I was putting a bit of humour into that. Nothing more than that.”

But the cheeky remark met with a stony response from Gers, who want an official investigation.

A statement from the Ibrox club read: “The club are disappointed with the comments attributed to Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell.

“Rangers Football Club, now in its 141st year, has a proud history which has been recognised by the football authorities and was noted in a recent SPL Commission determination.

“The club will now take this matter up with the relevant football authorities.”

Any probe by Hampden top brass could be potentially embarrassing for Lawwell, who now sits on powerful SFA committees.

Celts’ annual meeting also saw club chairman Iain Bankier take pot-shots at Rangers. When introducing those sat at the top table Bankier told how MP Ian Livingston had taken the name Lord Livingston of Parkhead, joking: “I thought he would go with Lord Livingston of Ibrox — so he could lord it over Rangers.”

Bankier was also quizzed on Celtic’s finances and whether their assets were owned by the club.

He said: “Yes, I can confirm that. I’m not going to show you the title deeds, though.” Meanwhile, Celtic boss Neil Lennon has revealed that he expects midfielder Joe Ledley to sign a new deal.

The Welshman has been offered a contract extension but has not yet agreed to accept it.

Lennon said: “He is away with Wales at the minute and he is mulling things over.

“We have made him an offer. Joe is aware of that as is his agent. Theirs is the next move now.

“He seems happy here and I think his performance last week will have done him good because he has been a wee bit curtailed this season by injuries.

“We know how good a player he is which is why we have offered him a new deal.

“Looking at his body language over the last week or so I’d like to think he’ll stay on.”

Lennon is also hopeful Icelandic striker Holmbert Fridjonsson will finalise his move to Parkhead this weekend — and be pushing for a first-team role by Christmas.

The Hoops gaffer added: “The fee is agreed. It is up to the player and his representative to agree personal terms.

“It’s not far away and hopefully it will be done over the weekend.

“He is a good player for his age. He is a good size. We had him in for a week-long trial and we were hugely impressed with him.

“It is not a huge outlay but we think he will get better and at 20 he has got really good potential.

“He isn’t one for the future, he’s one for the present, if he hits the ground running.”

Celtic fans fail in AGM bid to force club to report SFA over handling of Rangers crisis

    15 Nov 2013 15:18

A RESOLUTION to question why the SFA granted a licence to Rangers after they plunged into liquidation last year was adjourned indefinitely at today’s AGM.

CELTIC fans have failed in their bid to pass a motion forcing the club to report the SFA to UEFA over their handling of the Rangers crisis.

At today’s AGM the vote on a resolution to question why Scotland’s governing body granted a licence to the Ibrox side following liquidation was adjourned indefinitely.

A number of Celtic shareholders believed Rangers were treated leniently after Craig Whyte plunged them into the financial abyss back in February 2012.

The Parkhead board had refused to back the proposal and after a meeting with those desperate to bring UEFA into the matter a compromise appears to have been reached.

Celtic chairman Ian Bankier said: “I can advise that meetings have taken place with some of the requisitioners involved. I’m pleased to report that these meetings were very positive.

“They have assisted the club in understanding the concerns of the shareholders and a line of communication has been established, one that will continue.

‘The board has laid out a case for doing all we can to protect the club and proceed with a stand-alone strategy. I propose that the vote be adjourned indefinitely.”

Around 3000 shareholders crammed into the Kerrydale Suite to hear Bankier claim that nobody in Scottish football would be capable of stopping Celtic for the foreseeable future.

He said: “I would love to see this club become one of the main players on the world stage, in the modern game and in world football.

“The momentum we’ve built up in the last three to five years is formidable. With luck on our side and success on the field, we will be nothing short of unstoppable.”

Chief executive Peter Lawwell also revealed the club have appointed a Dutch lawyer to investigate claims of supporters mistreatment during last week’s trouble in Amsterdam prior to the Champions League clash with Ajax.

  11. Hi Ghuys…a couple of years ago I was on holiday in South Africa and was taken into a Township by an English guy called Douglas Gurr. He does terrific work through a charity called ‘The Kusasa Project’ (info@thekusasaproject.org) while going through the Township I noticed a lot of the kids wearing the tops of English Premier teams and as I was coming back this year I took six of my old tops, so at least there will be some hoops to be seen about now. However these were all adult tops and talking to Doug who was extremely grateful, it is clear that he could do with tops for the younger kids. So I am asking anyone with a spare kids top to send them onto Doug at.

    Morning hoops.

See the record deliberately misrepresenting resolution 12. No surprise there. With canmallar, BRTH, Morrisey and Auldheid apparently satisfied with the progress, I am quite optimistic that we may, sometime soon, get a bit of traction in the struggle to show up the whole Scottish football cabal for all it’s charming mixture of bigotry, incompetence and corruption. Go get’em Pistol Pete!

Think both Broonies and Mulgrew did ok last night. Forster might have got down a bit quicker for the first. England are rotten by the way. I have never felt so conflicted watching a game because, although I try not to hate England or any other nation for that matter, I can’t help wanting them to lose. However, I wanted big Fraser to keep a clean sheet. Perplexing.

Disappointing about the living wage decision. Perhaps it will be reconsidered.

She`s interested in power and influence.Nothing less.

How many supporters does she represent? What percentage voted for her?

That is presuming she was elected.

Could some Celtic employees lose their jobs to accommodate her “demand” for a ” living wage ” for the remainder ?

    Would she care?

What we do know is that she obviously doesn`t give a damn for the reputation of Celtic.

She has provided a bright ray of sunshine in these bleak days for the hun.

  17. The living wage decision fell flat on its face in my opinion because of the people who went up to the mic to propose it, name calling, saber rattling, shouts of shame, politics, self agendas the proposal got lost in other peoples egos, a let down for me as I was for it, poor display all round it got personal at one stage, it really was cringeworthy and embarrassing to be honest, only the way I saw and heard it, shame really.

You don’t really understand how an AGM works, do you?

  19. Tony

I believe the term “politics” was introduced by someone at the top table, not the proposer or supporters of the resolution for the intro of a living wage.

Can I give my thoughts on it? ( which I think might support your own views?)

Perhaps if there had been more of a similar approach as the one taken on resolution 13, there may have been more of a chance it would be given a better reception. Whilst I think Jeanette’s words were difficult to argue with, I do agree it came across as ott for me. Very emotive language , ( example – “shameful”) and a language that was bound to raise the hackles of the board members.

A more disciplined, considered and polite approach, which engaged the board more positively, may have been received a bit better.

I’m not sure much can now be done until the next AGM, but I hope if the status quo still exists on the living wage situation, that the next approach is more measured and better presented. I say better presented in respect of being less personal in its attack on board members.

Just reporting in that I’m fine,

    Another great meet up,

CQN never fails to amaze me,You say your going to have a wee drink in a bar after the AGM and you get to meet another lot of CQNers.

There were a few Lurkers who turned up at the Blane Valley,I did my best to get them to do their first post on here rather than just reading other peoples posts,it surprises me how many people go on CQN to just read the comments of others and not join in and post they’re own thoughts.

Got up early today to go to the Aberdeen game, then I discover that there ai’nt no game today, must have had more swallie than I thought.

By the way I ended up -LAST MAN STANDING,the last to leave the pub of the original bunch who went there for a drink,I must be becoming a problem drinker in my old age.

    Morning,

Re. Living wage, been giving it some thought,am I right in saying the ones who would benefit most are the p/t staff(under 30hrs) where its their only employment?

Full time staff(30+hrs) would qualify for working tax credits, their income would therefore not be greatly increased, if at all.

More than happy to reply as you raise valid questions and points.

Just to clarify a couple of things:

    1. Rangers were absolutely entitled to be granted a UEFA licence in 2011 in terms of the rules. That is not the issue at all — it is what happened once they were granted the licence that is the issue and what the SFA did or did not do from 31st March 2011 onwards.

There has never been any info to suggest that the SFA were incorrect in granting that licence as at 31 March……….. but of course should that info emerge than that is another story altogether but as yet it has never surfaced.

    2. Of course you are right to be cynical when dealing with any PLC or other large institution whether it be a bank, a council, Government Department, Licensing body, The Police, SFO, Parliament, European Parliament or whatever.

All of these entities have a corporeal tendency to start any negotiation from the point of view of having power– institutional or corporeal power— which the “wee guy” doesn’t have. Further– and I am not saying that Celtic are doing this— but they also exist in environments which many “wee guys” might find intimidating — plush offices, or debating chambers, or whatever– all of which emphasise where the power lies and all that kind of thing.

However, all of that makes sod all difference to the price of eggs when it comes to the checkout.

What matters is that when someone agrees to something then they stick to the agreement or are held to account when they don’t.

Now yesterday Celtic PLC gave a formal undertaking that was read into the minutes.

It means no more and no less than what it says and it was negotiated and agreed in advance.

They did exactly as was agreed yesterday — by the way the press reports are interesting and slightly funny.

    3. It was also accepted– and indeed emphasised in discussion– that the board of the PLC have a fiscal and fiduciary duty to pursue anyone– any person, any company, any body– who acts or who has taken steps which are to the detriment ( financial or otherwise ) or who acts in a fashion which is detrimental to the interests of the shareholders. That is something that cannot be negotiated away.

You can disagree on how to fulfil that duty but the duty remains.

Both in public and in private the board have undertaken to fulfil that duty and again it was read into the minutes specifically in relation to this resolution.

    The Question is will they?

Well if the requistioners can clearly present an argument which shows that there is more to explore, more to question and that the SFA position ( as stated on national radio by the way ) actually makes no sense and does not withstand deeper scrutiny — then why would Celtic PLC not continue to question the very matters that they started to question themselves in 2011 and continued to question in 2013?

That was a question that was asked by Peter Lawell in discussion?

It is a fair point– if the PLC have been “cheated” for want of a better word– why would they not pursue it?

    Personally, I have another question:

    Ever caught a fish?

Fish wriggle and wriggle at the end of a hook. Sometimes they wriggle off the hook, and sometimes they wriggle to no avail and are still caught. When they wriggle off the hook you continue to fish— you don’t give up!

When you catch a fish the question is what to do next? Some people throw them back, others take them home, chop off their head and their tail, fillet them and cook them — but you have to catch them first.

Finally as for being blinded by the light?

Well as we all know that is a Bruce Springsteen number.

Personally, I think the whole purpose of this entire exercise is to ensure that in future no one is Dancing in the dark!

I enjoy my wee meet ups with Other Celtic Supporters,Pity you live so far away, you would, I hope, have joined us if you were nearer home. It’s not all Celtic talk when we meet up. A myriad of different conversations take place,( and all at the same time). We even had our lawyer friend giving out free advice.

  27. I was at the AGM, but when I read the snippets from the Scottish Daily newspapers, I was at a different AGM, to say that these rags are being economical with the truth would be an understatement, honestly you get more truth from a North Korean Daily, no wonder Tim’s don’t buy them, as someone said, very witty actually, they have a way of printing the ( s)truth.
