AGM report, Living Wage, Rory Bremner, show us the deeds

1098

Celtic’s Annual General Meeting, held at Celtic Park today, was a livelier event than usual.  The board received a hostile response to their refusal to back a resolution to provide all staff with at least the Living Wage.  Several impassioned points were made from the floor, which convinced chairman, Ian Bankier, to dispense with his prepared response and provide answers to specific questions.

The vote went against the resolution based on the proxy votes cast by the chairman but the board have never lost the floor so convincingly on any prior issue.

Resolution 12, encouraging the club to purse the game’s authorities on matters relating to the governance of liquidated Rangers was adjourned indefinitely by the requisitioners.  On proposing the adjournment, a spokesman for the requisitioners (our own Morrissey23) explained that they had met the club and received information not previously known, and that further meetings were planned.

Fergus McCann made an unexpected contribution to the AGM by email through the chairman, extoling the virtues of financial director, Eric Riley, who he commended for 19 years’ service in pursuing Celtic’s interests.  Fergus asked for, and got, an applause for Eric Riley, which resulted in the first unanimous show of hands to re-elect a director I have seen at a Celtic AGM.

AGM questions can be a tortuous affair but they were on the money this year.  We had poetry, questions about financial governance including a question as to whether the club owns all of it’s perceived property assets.  Ian Bankier confirmed it did, before planting his tongue in his cheek to insist “I’m not going to show you the deeds”.

When one shareholder expressed frustration that a new Scottish club is pretending to be a now liquidated club, chief executive, Peter Lawwell, retorted, “Rory Bremner can pretend to be Tony Blair”.

First time you have been in the Blane Valley?????

FFS — in times past if you could have got the prison van to line up the accused outside and bring them in one by one. You could have conducted a court in there– the Sheriffs, the Prosecution and the Defence were all already in there.

There was many a time when I heard the Blane Valley Adjournment speech— ” I am afraid that this matter cannot proceed at this time, m’lud, because my learned friend and I have a pressing engagement in the Blane Valley ” or ” I’m afraid that this cannot proceed m’lud because Mr x has been unexpectedly detained in the Blane Valley ” and so on.

  5. The thing is you will get more people listening and favoring you if you stick to the agenda and make your point clear like big nan did the other day, many lessons on getting your point or argument through could be taken from that Video alone, I’m afraid they let the people down, sometimes the softly softly approach is better, when you get personal and start name calling, that’s it your done, and on Mr Bankiers little second job jibe, well that was ill advised to say the least, but the Clyde side reds making it a party political broadcast? Also I’ll advised, in my opinion.

BRTH, Auldheid – you must accept that there is a dilemna for those of us who applaud Big Nan when he eloquently jousted this week for the cause of transparency, but 72 hours later are asked to accept a secret deal?

    I. Fully behind the living wage proposals. I didn’t like the personal nature of :

“The rich men sitting up there decided they will not put in a commitment to pay this wage. How disgusting.

“The people who brought them their tea when they were making the decision are probably affected by that.

“It is one of the grubbiest, most divisive decisions taken by a Celtic board”

    ———-

JF often uses emotive language. She’s not everyone’s cup of tea. She can occasionally politicise issues when politics is best cast aside.

She was bang in the money with the comments you’ve posted.

We are paying Celtic employees a wage that wouldn’t give the option of buying a season ticket to watch the team on the park.

Jeanette’s approach failed, and that is the most important factor in all of this, don’t you agree? I’ve said it already, I fully support the living wage. If you thought that by threatening to boycott merchandising would have achieved the result required, rather than the personal attack approach, wouldn’t you accept that this would have been a better tactic?

The board at Celtic initially inferred that they would not back Resolution 12. Those who proposed it did so because they wanted to force/persuade the board to challenge the SFA and their granting of a license to the Huns.

Many who backed the proposal, and who provided votes etc, believed that the resolution would ultimately end in failure. However, they were content in the knowledge that their reservations would be given a public airing.

    That hasn’t happened.

Without knowing what has taken place in the interim it would appear that the board have out maneouvered those who proposed the resolution.

    I genuinely hope I’m wrong.

  12. One last thing…definitely ..really gotta go

The naive side of me perhaps, but, I have a feeling there will be a further response from the board re the living wage when they have fully digested the fallout from yesterday. I sincerely hope so anyway.

Agree …… Whatever reason the Board gave must have been acceptable…… will be interesting to discover why agreement was readily achieved…….

  20. If they ever have an AGM wait & see the number of ‘digs’ at us they orchestrate to deflect attention from their mess, to rally the klan & in the hope hope that we take the bait. We won’t, despite the very best efforts of the smsm.

They’re a constant source of amusement.

I think the living wage denial by the Celtic Board was and is shocking however,I think now the Genie is out of the bottle they will eventually have to pay it as they must know it is the right thing to do.I dont understand how the huns believe its the same club they must be brainwashed muppets the lot of them.I will refrain from any further comments on resolution 12 I said my piece yesterday and will now await further developments.H.H.

I understand politics, evidence/timeline is key in this, i’m guessing there’s some tasty bits of jigsaw everyone needs to investigate.

I am giving PL the benefit of the doubt, fool me once etc.

  25. Some people will NEVER trust the board, and that’s the way they are, others like myself do trust the board, and that’s the way life is, I can live with that NP, but can you imagine any of us in the situation the Huns are in, with no board to hate or back, what would we do? Lol.

BRTH – you ask what is secret about it?

Resolution 12 was “adjourned” – not an everyday word, but if I was being uncharitable I’d say it meant “kicked into the long grass”.

I can well understand this happening if the Board were reacting to recent and rapidly changing events, but the resolution has been gestating for at least 3 months, while the issue itself is over 2 years old.

I’m not a board basher, I know that may be at odds with my recent posts :-)

However, in recent times the PLC have shown themselves to be crafty, cunning and deceitful. They have shown very little that would suggest they are willing to engage with the support in any manner unless it is on their terms (the rejection of the Celtic Trust’s resolution yesterday) or to give the impression of dialogue (the GB).

I believe I’m right to be both sceptical and wary.
