AGM report, Living Wage, Rory Bremner, show us the deeds

1098

Celtic’s Annual General Meeting, held at Celtic Park today, was a livelier event than usual.  The board received a hostile response to their refusal to back a resolution to provide all staff with at least the Living Wage.  Several impassioned points were made from the floor, which convinced chairman, Ian Bankier, to dispense with his prepared response and provide answers to specific questions.

The vote went against the resolution based on the proxy votes cast by the chairman but the board have never lost the floor so convincingly on any prior issue.

Resolution 12, encouraging the club to purse the game’s authorities on matters relating to the governance of liquidated Rangers was adjourned indefinitely by the requisitioners.  On proposing the adjournment, a spokesman for the requisitioners (our own Morrissey23) explained that they had met the club and received information not previously known, and that further meetings were planned.

Fergus McCann made an unexpected contribution to the AGM by email through the chairman, extoling the virtues of financial director, Eric Riley, who he commended for 19 years’ service in pursuing Celtic’s interests.  Fergus asked for, and got, an applause for Eric Riley, which resulted in the first unanimous show of hands to re-elect a director I have seen at a Celtic AGM.

AGM questions can be a tortuous affair but they were on the money this year.  We had poetry, questions about financial governance including a question as to whether the club owns all of it’s perceived property assets.  Ian Bankier confirmed it did, before planting his tongue in his cheek to insist “I’m not going to show you the deeds”.

When one shareholder expressed frustration that a new Scottish club is pretending to be a now liquidated club, chief executive, Peter Lawwell, retorted, “Rory Bremner can pretend to be Tony Blair”.

After today’s events we can hardly lay claim to being more than that.

Indeed,I would go so far as to say we are merely a business.

Ironically, the clubs with rich oligarch or sheikh ownership are possibly nearer to our ideal than what we have!

Football first, worry about the books later.

I don’t advocate that-far from it-but IMO we are as far away from our roots as the likes of Man City.

I am finding it hard to contain my contempt for the cowardly decision made on resolution 12. I want to wait for Canamalar or other to explain it. Thus far from my read back no one has.

If you genuinely wanted to wait for canamalar’s explanation, which he has already given, then you would not have reached the definitive and prejudiced position of calling it cowardly.

If no one has explained it, to your satisfaction, why are you asking for another explanation. It has already been explained and you are not receptive to the explanation given. Do you think they are going to make up another one?

At face value then we have our Board acting in a cowardly manner by ensuring that the resolution did not get discussed. Why on earth the resolutioners would agree to this is at this moment beyond me.

So both sides of the argument, if they are on opposite sides, are cowards? Are the brave ones, the ones who did not even bother to get an argument together, framed, accepted and privately debated? Are you brave for rating them as cowards when you did not, as far as I know, get a resolution together and then insisted it was debated today?

Right now I feel this is the nail in the coffin for this Board and its attitude to corruption.

Please someone explain why its a good thing it wasnt discussed?

The explanation has been given. People cannot betray their confidences, even for you, and only time will tell if they, and we, have been duped. It still won’t make us cowards even with your standards of bravery to live up to.

“Celtic fans fail in AGM bid to force club to report SFA over handling of Rangers crisis”

This from the Daily Record this afternoon.

What an odd choice of wording for the headline. Not that we ought be surprised at the Daily Record presenting a Celtic story negatively of course.

Fact is “Celtic fans fail in AGM bid to force club to pay living wage to poorest paid staff” is accurate, but not used.

I applaud the work that the group sponsoring Res 12 have done, and I consider that they have achieved their significant goal: They’ve used the book to get the message across that those with Responsibility for running the game will be held Accountable.

    Well done guys.

On Living Wage, it’s a difficult topic. Way back when, it wasn’t unusual for fellas to get a pay rise when they got married, and another when they had kids. Old time ‘paternalistic’ employers recognising that typically family men needed more cash than single men.

Of course, this ended with the emerging equalities agenda. Why should someone receive any more or less in wages than their colleague for doing the same job simply on the grounds of marital status.

Thus the maxim “From each according to his ability; To each according to his need” has been discarded. It may seem a little incongruous that a socialist principle has been undone by what many consider to be social betterment.

Looking at Celtic’s position, clearly with the social dimension of the club, and the scale of the business, there ought to be no reason why Celtic should not among the most valued employers in the country.

The matter then crystallises somewhat around what employees value, and we might be surprised, in valued employment, just how far down the hierarchy wages sit. Those who need to work for a living need a living wage. Paying it should be axiomatic for an employer like Celtic. We oughtn’t need a contrived standard to tell us what that level is.

Making Celtic a valued employer though does not start and stop with the Living Wage.

  6. Corkcelt – firstly I have not accussed the organisers of the resolution of anything – read back please. Please dont put words in my mouth.

I agree I may be being hasty – but the fact remains – the board have once again managed to avoid speaking publically on these matters. They have, it appears to me, given a sort of “jam tomorrow” response – and of course sorry but I dont believe there will be jam tomorrow. I simply dont trust the Board. I admire their tenancity in avoiding confronting these issues.

Auldhied – you are quite correct I should wait for the answers – but am I going to get any? I never expected them to pass the resolution and I dont expect to hear any more publicly about this matter. If there is further evidence then we should be challenging it publicly. There is NO excuse not to – none.

This was an incredibly important resolution – and celtic managed to bury it.

  7. Get the feeling that some of posts in here are a little premature. Let’s hear what Morrissey et al have to report back. My view was that the resolution would be lost today .

Looks as though we have gone into extra time.

On the Living Wage, I sense we are pushing at an open door.

  8. I feel sick to my stomach that Res. 12 is being spun as a victory for the hun. I just hope they get everything that,s coming to them.

  9. Auldhied

Thanks for coming on here, and trying to explain, as best you can, where we currently are with this issue.

Are you able to say when this dialogue with the club will be concluded ?

Also, many advocate that the club and the supporters are at odds on this, given that this was not killed off today, would it be fair to say this is not the case ?

Just catching up on today’s AGM proceedings from Benalmadena, and as a temporarily absent shareholder supporting Resolution 12 (the honorable Morrisey had my proxy) I wait anxiously to hear where we go from here.

Some excellent inputs on here (James Forrest , Auldheid et al) and I feel that we must maintain the momentum and that we are eventually in a position to share the outcome with complete transparency. It may just be a matter of the time being right. I certainly hope so. Breath suitably baited. HH

Celtic isn’t a government or a political party.

The club cannot be held responsible for all the wrongs of society.

That minimum wage is a disgrace, but people should take it to the Tory government or their local mp.

I have in no way criticised Canamalar – read my post – I am criticising the Board. I know you are desparate for me to be appearing those who took the time to raise the resolution but much to your dissapointment I am not. I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about regarding sides of arguments and cowards and bravery. I am accussing the Board of cowardice – of not wanting to debate these issues in public. I suspect we will hear nothing more on the matter from celtic.

I think it was the Aberdeen fans who had the banner which said “Your silence is defeaning” – they are absolutely correct and we as a support have some serious soul searching to do.

Sometimes it’s better to light a candle than moan about the dark.

It would be easy enough for the Club to pay a living wage but it’s all but impossible for the Board to do anything the Celtic Trust ask them to do.

  18. As I predicted a year ago, the chickens are coming home to roost! I used Joe Ledley as a perfect example as someone with no emotional ties to Celtic ( Good player who understood quickly what were about) now being evasive about signing a new deal !! Like it or lump it without the challenge of the Huns Scotland is a notch above the league of Ireland in terms of decent players willing to play in the mire, lets not be kidded the standard is diabolical and attendances are fallen , why if you were Ledley would you sign a new deal?? To play potentially 6 champions league games?? NO thanks!! I think you’ll find he will sign for a Everton or Cardiff type team , earn more money and get challenged week in week out, least when the Huns where in the league there was a constant challenge!! It almost seems that the unwritten rule on this forum is that if you would be happy to see the challenge of the Huns back you must be a Hun (great reasoning) further to this suggestion I have played in the CQN golf singles the last 2 years and every other forum member I have played have stated they wanted the Huns back though probably wouldn’t admit it on here!!

I am hoping for results, if we get those results then that should demonstrate to all that the resolution worked and was propely handled.

If not then we will deserve all the criticism that will follow.

  21. Fastbhoy – it is a victory for the hun and for the SFA etc etc – it has succesfully been buried by the Board.

It’s been adjourned because the sponsors understand that there is further germane information likely to emerge in early which would make either them or the Board change their position in the resolution.

I thought that was stated quite clearly at the time.

  24. embramike walking with wee oscar on

And could someone much closer than I nip round to the DR office and tell them to amend their headline re Resolution 12 and get it right for once for their half a dozen remaining readers. Or perhaps the board could make a statement through the official website?

  25. Rory Bremner sparks FFin’ cholera:

“I really don’t think we can let this pass as a club, if Liewell really has said this.

This undermines completely his position as a representative on any official body purporting to exist for the good of Scottish football.

How can we as a club have any confidence in this person in his dealings as an SFA Official that may involve us as a club.

They haven’t just got the game sown up in Scotland, they are now laughing into our faces.”

    ——

“If it was actually said then Rangers must make a formal complaint to the SFA and UEFA.”

In many ways, the non occurrence of an AGM at Sevco on December 19th(never gonna happen in a month of Hundays) can be traced back to the events of 25th May 1967?

    Bit late catching up.

Should your prediction of a non occurrence of an agm at Sevco prove accurate It can be traced back entirely, and not just in many ways to the events of 25h of ay 1967.

On that day, all their assumptions of automatic superiority collapsed and multi millions of pounds of sticking plaster have never put it together again.

THEY are now paying for years of aggrieved arrogance and overwhelming jealousy.
