AIK, Thistle, James Forrest again

281

While we hoped for a backlash, the performance on Saturday against Dunfermline was in the post.  Scoring 12 in two league games this month is more of a measure of where we are right now, but Tuesday’s defeat cast a long shadow.  Whatever hangover exists, it needs to lift by Thursday.

Two pieces of positive news arrived yesterday: a home tie in the quarterfinals, against Partick Thistle, and AIK lost at home to Kalmar.  Thistle will be no easier than Dunfermline, but they are the only lower league team left in the competition and the tie is at Celtic Park.

AIK rested five who eliminated Sheriff on Thursday, but as we know, a defeat at home to a team with significantly fewer resources damages morale.  AIK will slip four points off the pace if Djurgarden win at home tonight.

For a while on Saturday, it looked like our monopoly of domestic trophies could end.  Winning 28 consecutive cups games is unfathomably consistent, even the greatest teams have off days.  It is a measure of James Forrest that he again delivered.

Kind of makes sense since the media destabilisation campaign is against the club and not an individual.

  2. A lot of Phil Mac bashing on here for some reason. Does he occasionally share rumours and get things wrong? Of course he does, like any other journalist who dabbles in sport. Is he 100% better than the so called journos in this country? Damn right he is!

  3. I Hope Peter Lawwell speaks out and stands up for Tom Boyd.

He should be saying the same in official protests/complains.

    I won’t hold my breath.

I think it’s damaging to be putting unfounded rubbish out there that could cause issues within the Celtic club.

    Why? More donations.

  5. Peter Lawwell is one of the best connected football executives in Europe. Can’t see him going anywhere anytime soon. This from the Herald 17th August …

Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell joins four-man council on Champions League reform

CELTIC chief executive Peter Lawwell has been appointed as one of four key men who will try and change the Champions League format just days after the Neil Lennon’s side were dumped out of the competition.

The Parkhead chief was named as one of four men by the European Club Association to sit on UEFA’s Professional Football Strategy Council for the next four years and will be charged with changing the heavily-criticised format of the Champions League.

Lawwell will join Ajax chief Edwin van der Sar, vice president of Real Madrid Pedro Lopez and Arsenal’s football director Raul Sanllehi in trying to radically alter Europe’s top competition after major complaints over the qualification progress, which sees clubs like Celtic and Ajax being forced to undergo many rounds just to get into the Group Stages.

Lawwell, who is already a member of the ECA Executive Board, was appointed at a meeting of the 246-strong organisation in Liverpool.

They stated: “Our Executive Board appointed the four ECA representatives who will sit on the UEFA Professional Football Strategy Council for the upcoming cycle 2019-23. These are Pedro Lopez of Real Madrid, Rauul Sanllehi of Arsenal, Edwin van der Sar of Ajax and Peter Lawwell of Celtic.”

How do you know it’s rubbish? He was right about Rangers and Sevco wasn’t he? I bet the Rangers (now Sevco) fans wish they had listened to him.

Sevco. Just saying that word always makes me laugh. You should try it and give yourself a chuckle.

What they should be doing of course is investigating John Beaton’s performance, not what someone has said about his performance, this is just another salvo in the STOP THEM AT ANY COST CAMPAIGN.

In terms of big stories recently he totally nailed the Sports Direct/Dave King court case, didn’t he? Phil isn’t perfect but if you can name a better journalist dealing with Scottish football give me his/her name and I’ll check them out.

  17. It would be Intresting to know if Celtic have entered into an agreement with the huns for the £52 ticket price.

  18. My reply on the E-Tims site to their article about fans being “played” or over-reacting to our current difficulties:-

Nobody’s ever going to admit that they are played by the media. If they were “played” they would be unconscious of it and denying it. It ends up a bit like the witch ducking trials.

All of us can be played including those who defend Neil Lennon.

The current situation is not surprising. We were all delighted by the way Neil steadied the ship and saw us through to our 8th title in a row. Even so, the majority of the support did not want him appointed and felt he was imposed on the club in a shabby manner.

    And they have a point.

Nevertheless, he is appointed and we need to seriously and soberly consider our actions given that. Neil had a great start to this season – 5 Euro ties with minimal fuss and then one catastrophic defensive exhibition which he did not sort out. The league saw a great start too but we had a disappointing bore of a League Cup victory.

7 very good performances followed by one disaster and a boring win do not make a strong case for a NFL sacking, but there is a very strong appetite for it amongst our support.

There was always going to be high anxiety this year. we dialled our angst up to 11 last year and it will be closer to 20 before this season is out. There is next to no chance of Dermot Desmond being outed until he is ready to go. The only chance of Peter Lawwell going is if we lose the league- and that is not a price worth paying.

Neil Lennon is expendable but would be a real kick in the teeth to someone who suffered for us during his time. He deserves better than he is getting but he does not deserve a job for life.

My view is that, unless things get much worse, in terms of the league, then sacking Neil carries more risk than keeping him. It certainly would further their strength which comes from their adversity and it runs the risk of another upheaval at our club at a vulnerable time in the league campaign.

This is not a ringing endorsement of Neil- I was not in favour of his appointment- but now he is in place, we must resist the hotheaded over-reaction that says he is defined by these last 2 games. Neil did nothing wrong and a lot right in seeing us through the final 2 legs of last year’s Treble.

So, whether you’ve been played or are just temporarily in a mood because we have had a bad week, I’d ask you to reconsider turning fire on our club. We will have a lot more hard times this year and if our support crumbles before we have had a chance to put a dent in the

confidence of the Sevco support, then I am afraid, we will be culpable in giving them an advantage which may prove crucial.

Of course, if we lose out on Europa Group Stage and fall significantly behind in the league, then all bets are off and nothing will stop the anger resulting in sacrificial sackings.

But until them, a bit more faith in the people who delivered 8iar, can be justified. And a bit less of the buying into the Hun supporter narrative that anyone could have led Celtic to those 8 titles and we’re only under pressure because “The Rangers are Coming!”, should be parked for the time being.

Desmond did get more involved in 2016 and its not beyond the realms of possibility he does again soon.

Only because he was humiliated by Awvco directors during that fateful afternoon when the buns knocked us out of the Scottish Cup.

The lack of support for Brendan shows that it was all about his own damaged ego. True leadership, indeed

Excellent article as always. I think at the time we can focus on one issue like McGregor playing at LB but forget other factors (like Bain making an arse of it to concede a corner)

  21. SETTING FREE THE BEARS FOR RES. 12 & OSCAR KNOX on 19TH AUGUST 2019 4:58 PM

Excellent post. I defended the Neil Lennon appointment as I felt the criticism of our performances under him last season were unfairly criticised and the other appointments were far fetched.

We share a media market with the EPL and it has a habit of skewing our views. We know Rafa Benitez well, we are aware of his situation at Newcastle and think “why not?” The clickbait media will talk it up as they have space in newspapers and websites to fill. The bookies will try and drum up interest in the betting market.

Meanwhile, Rafa was never interested. If he was to leave the EPL (the biggest show on earth) it wasn’t going to be for Scotland. China is a provincial league like Scotland but 12 million a year is insane.

  22. AuroraBorealis79 on

Phil said it is his ‘belief’ that Lenny and Broony had words. What does that mean, belief! You either have sources or you don’t, sounds like he’s joining the dots in his own head.

I’m guessing that he has realised that nobody listens anymore when he uses the “my source tells me”

Regardless, you dont have to be rocket surgeon to imagine that there has to have been some kind of disagreement between the 2 after broonys liking of that tweet in the aftermath of the Cluj game. That was a Roy Keane moment from the Captain except Keano would have told the manager what he thought to his face & not been so sleeket to have liked a tweet then claim it was an accident.

Pretty poor from the captain, which in some cases could have seen him shown door.

  23. I’m glad all the stuff about Tom Boyd being investigated by the CO. Keeps it in the news. Lets hear more about the reason he made the remarks. Cheatin Beaton in the pub last season barely never got a mention in MSM, and was even quickly forgotten on Celtic sites as we went on to secure the Treble Treble. GET IT BACK IN THE NEWS !!!!!
