Alcohol, poor facilities and dignity at Ibrox

1766

I’m a bit confused at the chat this morning of reintroducing the sale of alcohol at football games.  Alcohol is available for sale at games at Celtic Park, you just need to have a ticket for an expensive enough seat.  If you’re in the cheap seats, you get to queue to pay for some cola.  Is people’s ability to pay an indication of their likelihood to behave in a dangerous or criminal way with some alcohol in their blood?

This implication has always troubled me.

Alcohol, wherever it is sold, inevitably leads to over-indulgence and potentially dangerous behaviour, and requires strong stewarding, whether that is at a night club, or in the No. 7 restaurant.  Scotland’s licenced premises have changed beyond recognition in recent decades.  They are increasingly well-lit, family friendly and safe places to be.  They now sell better beer too, but our nation’s problem with alcohol remains acute.

Society needs to be educated on how to use alcohol responsibly; good venues are part of the solution.

While we are on the subject of facilities at Celtic Park…….  I go months without buying food or drink in the North Stand, Upper, for good reason.  Last week (pestered by one of the boys), I left for the kiosk with 40 minutes on the clock, didn’t get served until the second half started, only to be told there were no hotdogs or pies left.

You know me, I’m not one to get angry at Celtic, but the sheer frustration pushed me over the top, and I didn’t have a drink!  If you’re charging circa £4 for something that’s costing less than £1, make sure stock is sufficient.  Have two people serving each side of the kiosk, not two on one side, with a single person making hardly a dent on the queue at the other.

Needed to get that off my chest.

The ‘news’ this morning that Rangers International are trying to sack commercial director, Imran Ahmad, is more curious for being news than in itself.  Is it even possible for this news to be anything other than a leak from a director against another director?  These newspaper people don’t do irony, they just take careful notes and go write up their story.

This whole episode is beginning to feel a bit like sitting out the back when the neighbours don’t realise their bedroom window is open.  You can hear the noises and you looked up and caught a glance at something horrific looking.  It’s something you’ll laugh about later with your friends but these people really need to acquire some dignity.

By the time that this all happened HBOS denied that they had ever had a Reading Branch at all— besides— Given what has supposedly now been pinned on the so called Reading Branch— it must have been the biggest bank branch in the world.

I know for a fact that HBOD files disappeared from Chester Business Banking Centre– and that ain’t anywhere near Reading!

Reading the ‘How to live on £53 per week’ article on the BBC.

Unbelievably, apparently it costs around £1000 per year to keep a domestic cat.

    £1000.

    To keep a cat?

Not in this house. Oh no.

Our 2 cats, Munn and Dunning, cost virtually nothing to keep, if you consider the minimal cost of garbage and Tesco Value Peanuts. My simple, sustainable solution is to cut a small hole – about the size of a 10p piece – at the bottom of the neighbour’s wheelie bin.

The local mice thrive by being able to feed on the garbage, the cats likewise on the mice. Accordingly, the cats are well exercised before their dinner, and can enjoy some playtime with their leftovers afterwards.

This has the added benefit that the local mice tend to live in and around the neighbour’s house rather than mine. The cats enjoy spending so much of their time round there that they’ve even adopted the large flower pot under the kitchen window as a litter tray, the one used by the neighbour for his herbs I think – not that he thanks me for the free fertiliser, oh no.

To balance the cats’ diet I use Tesco Value Peanuts, 59p for 200 grams, twice a year. Placed in a typical feeder at ground level, the peanuts attract the blue tits, robins and sparrows to the back yard, particularly effective around fledging time, and periodically creates a rather catching pastiche of feathers and feet as the cats pile in to the bite size beauties.

So there you have it: A Low-cost High-protein diet for the active cat, and the thick end of £1000 spare each year to support the good work of PDSA and YOC.

  11. Afternoon,

agree Paul, it is another anti-working class football fan rule, it is crazy that I can go to an event in the new Emirates Arena across from Celtic Park and purchase alcohol while attending cycling and basketball but if you are going to watch football its a big no on. It is time this discriminatory law was changed.

Always wondered how Celtic are licensed/allowed to sell drink via hospitality and lounges pre and post match and cannot do the same in the other areas of the ground. Can the club not bring change to this situation, and while we are at it bring back standing areas as well!!

there is surely money to be made Peter :)

  15. No posted since the news was leaked of PLC Peters attacks on the GB. This hasnt and will not go away you know!

    Kudos to the PLC for lowering ticket prices wont comment on the reasons but fair play it is what the support wanted and credit where its due well done PLC Board and Celtic…….but;

If you have an adult/child package like I do, you will not get any discount as the tickets are already discounted, i pay £420 for an adult and child restricted view seats in section 123, which is a very competitive price, great deal for me, although the childs ticket this year did not cover the “club 12” games.

I did not expect a full discount on my seats but i think some sort of gesture to fans with this type of ticket would be appreciated as well. I am lucky i can afford the £420, i know a lot of fans on the package deals who cant, and the discount would be manna from heaven for.

As for drink at the games i pay £40 a season for the priveledge of the champions lounge at Celtic Park home of the Affiliation. Vastly over priced drinks but its a nice lounge, dont know why we pay the £40 a season for as lounges on match days are lying empty.

Celtic would do well to look at the MLB model for basebal in the states as regards how to treat the fans, we are light years behind that match/game day expierience.

  20. People should be allowed to drink if they want to, but the government, or somebody, needs to start a course in teaching people how to be well mannered when bevvied.

It’s the rudeness (including loud use of foul language), not the drunkenness that is the problem for other people.

Utter joke. Apparently lots of people want to move to dearer seats!

  25. Not so keen on booze at the game, since the guy in the row behind barfed over me and my friend at one game. No he hadn’t been under the North stand, his friends had somehow smuggled the contents of Baird’s into the match concealed inside his body, It must have been something like that Escape from Colditz scene where the prisoners hold up a dummy for the headcount when they passed him through the turnstile.

  26. my post was in relation to children and wi fi access etc..
