Alcohol, poor facilities and dignity at Ibrox

1766

I’m a bit confused at the chat this morning of reintroducing the sale of alcohol at football games.  Alcohol is available for sale at games at Celtic Park, you just need to have a ticket for an expensive enough seat.  If you’re in the cheap seats, you get to queue to pay for some cola.  Is people’s ability to pay an indication of their likelihood to behave in a dangerous or criminal way with some alcohol in their blood?

This implication has always troubled me.

Alcohol, wherever it is sold, inevitably leads to over-indulgence and potentially dangerous behaviour, and requires strong stewarding, whether that is at a night club, or in the No. 7 restaurant.  Scotland’s licenced premises have changed beyond recognition in recent decades.  They are increasingly well-lit, family friendly and safe places to be.  They now sell better beer too, but our nation’s problem with alcohol remains acute.

Society needs to be educated on how to use alcohol responsibly; good venues are part of the solution.

While we are on the subject of facilities at Celtic Park…….  I go months without buying food or drink in the North Stand, Upper, for good reason.  Last week (pestered by one of the boys), I left for the kiosk with 40 minutes on the clock, didn’t get served until the second half started, only to be told there were no hotdogs or pies left.

You know me, I’m not one to get angry at Celtic, but the sheer frustration pushed me over the top, and I didn’t have a drink!  If you’re charging circa £4 for something that’s costing less than £1, make sure stock is sufficient.  Have two people serving each side of the kiosk, not two on one side, with a single person making hardly a dent on the queue at the other.

Needed to get that off my chest.

The ‘news’ this morning that Rangers International are trying to sack commercial director, Imran Ahmad, is more curious for being news than in itself.  Is it even possible for this news to be anything other than a leak from a director against another director?  These newspaper people don’t do irony, they just take careful notes and go write up their story.

This whole episode is beginning to feel a bit like sitting out the back when the neighbours don’t realise their bedroom window is open.  You can hear the noises and you looked up and caught a glance at something horrific looking.  It’s something you’ll laugh about later with your friends but these people really need to acquire some dignity.

Just read Kenny Shiels comment today (re. NEIL’s PFA awards view) … that ” Some managers are egotistical”……… that’s rich, coming from a ‘raging nutcase’……. Hahahahahahahaha…!!!

Came on here a few hours (& 2 blogs) ago to see you in an interesting discussion about Germany – or even Austria as all those mentioned were from there. Can’t let it pass without stating that Bruckner was a greater symphonist than Mahler, & not only IMO but in the judgement of the UK public over the last 50 years – also wrote absolute gems of motets + lots of other stuff. BTW I’m not dissing Mahler, who wrote great songs as well as symphonies.

I’ve got access to Newcastle’s ground and go down a couple of times a year with a mate for ‘selected’ games. The oveall experience is top notch. Apart from the fact you can give the club money having a reasonably priced beer from one of the many, many small bars dotted around underneath the stadium (very similar to Celtic Park), both before the game and at half time, these outlets also serve food and there are LOADS of wee shelves to put your food and drink on. Utterly simple, but so helpful when you’re trying to balance two or three items at once. And the bogs are, well …. not ‘bogs’. They’re toilets, very clean even at half time (I’m assumimng somehting is done during the first half regards cleaning and refilling the paper towels).

The drunkest I’ve seen our supporters was the 98 shame game, felt like everyone was pissed.

    Guy falling off top tier.

Coins being thrown all around me (row z JS upper) which could only hit our own in tier below.

Couple of guys trying to get on park.

Alcohol needs proper control if available in stadium!

  10. dixiebhoy69, Your post at 15.19 reminds me of an incident, where a lad was leaving the loo after having a pee without washing his hands. A guy says to him, “My Ma, always told me to wash my hands after having a pee. Ist guy replies “My Ma always told me, never to pee on my hands”.

  11. Just been on the Official Site to renew. For the Fifth time in Five years I have been unable to do so. I Bank Online. I book hotels online. I book flights online. I buy stuff online. I pay bills online. With all these transactions (and many more) I seldom have a problem. With Celtic FC, I have a problem EVERY year. I email them every year explaining this situation and am told it will be fine next year. I then renew by `phone and am charged at 10p per minute for the privilege of allowing Celtic to take money from me. Something is sadly wrong in the running of Celtic, the business.

No one will be allowed to drink themselves stupid whilst inside the ground and if they are in a state already they won’t get in… it has been thought through, it works in countries where grounds have a similiar capacity to ours and we can’t have one rule for those who can afford the luxury tickets and those who buy the ordinary tickets.

It’s self control that’s required not the control of alcohol per se.

At most away games you’ll see a few guys blootered, they’re not drinking INSIDE the stadium it’s the hours preceding the game where the damage is done.

I had my first meeting with Ally McCoist this morning. He strode into the office purposely, but was quickly distracted by the plate of donuts I had on my desk.

I told Ally I was delighted to see him and that we should discuss transfer targets as soon as possible – I have a feeling the guy from Sky Sports will ask him about that in the press conference this afternoon.

Unfortunately, Ally had his face full of grub for the next five minutes, and was unable to reply but he gave me a wink and a ‘thumbs up’ as he wriggled out of the chair before waddling out of the office.

The old brown Brogues are still cutting the heels off me, but they are nice and shiny.

It’s not all fun, fun, fun for me at Ibrox though. Tomorrow I have to watch the team.

*Note to myself: May have to visit the Barras on Sunday for a second-bum office chair.

  17. For all those who are (rightly) criticizing the catering at Celtic, you can follow @MaleysBhoys on Twitter.

He is in direct conversation with the club on this subject and has been for some time, including taking part in a few meetings at the stadium.

I am sure he would appreciate more feedback on the issues people are facing.

    I don’t moan…it’s just that I can’t / wont happy-clapp.

You talk about the SB providing the finance for contracts for talented players of the requisite skill levels that Celtic fans deserve to watch. That is all well and good….in theory.

You see, or, the way that I see it – 12.5%of the Sb money goes on 2 players.

Scott Brown and Joe Ledley. Value for money ?

Not in my book. Not by a long shot.

Scott Brown = 5 good games in as many years. imo

Joe Ledley = The modern day Peter Grant ie: The Invisible Man. imo

Do not take this personally KevJ, it just gives me a chance to say my piece to the support at large.

I’m sure as you often talk mince ;) you will not mind if I use a mince analogy. In 2004 when the club decided to get off liquidation highway they realised that we could no longer afford steak mince. The diet from then on was beef mince with the occasionally foray into the steak mince market to add a wee bit of flavor. Some of those forays worked like Nakamura some like Graveson, were offal. The lesson from that was 1. buy cheap at the veal stage and hope that it matures to become steak mince. 2. Buy safe bets that can do a job in the SPL and not be fazed by Europe.

Picking veal that will mature into steak mince and possibly prime T bone is no easy task or everyone would do it. Balancing the needs of providing a winning and entertaining team against that policy is no easy task either. It takes brains and effort and diligence with a good degree of business acumen to do it. That is why CEO wages have stayed high, because monkeys cannot do the hard task of building the capacity to recruit and develop players (look across the river to see what the alternative offers and watch them copy us) and Celtic are in the CEO meat market not the peanut market.

At a starting point of…now…why don’t Celtic make a few signings from all the CL money that they have taken in ?

Johnny Russell – GMS for example.

You see….the bored / hierarchy have pursued this policy of bringing in cheap players and hoping to sell them on for a good profit. All well and good – if it actually happens.

We sold Ki for £5 mill after buying him for – £2 mill. Good stuff.

BTM brought in Ki. How many of the payers that Neil has brought to the club have made money for us ?

This is an angle that has been driven by – Neil – PL etc but, it disny happen.

It has not happened yet because it takes time for players to play and so become marketable and given NL is only in post full time since June 2010 your judgment is way premature (although I’d be delighted if we signed Russell and GMS). The problem is not that the policy is not working it might be that it is working too well and we are going to have a job holding on to players.

The stadium is now(domestically) half / full / empty. That is the result of constantly cutting back the quality on the pitch. Imo

You say this ad nausea completely ignoring, in spite of being constantly reminded, of all the other factors affecting attendance which have nothing whatsoever to do with the standard of play, which whilst not perfect is as good as it has been on occasions since MoN’s days.

How many teams have put bids in for our 2 highest paid players ?

We want a wack – if we sell, or, look like selling, but – we’re not too keen on splashing the cash when recruiting. Maybe some of the bored / hierarchy felt that we got our fingers burned when we splashed £4 mill on Broony ?

See above on the policy and time to market.

It’s strange these days that we’re not being brow-beaten in to thinking that the club is brilliantly run what with – “…the balance-sheet this…or, we’ve sold so many SB’s this year again…blah blah…” aye- they were the days right enough.

These days when they give out the attendance figures they have to add 20k on to it.

Increasingly it matters not how many turn up, what matters is how much Celtic get from supporters to put a team on the park. I attended my first league game this season last Saturday. Serendipitulously it was title clinching day but it happened to be the first day I was back in Scotland after 7 months away. I paid using my Overseas Season Book which for £300 allowed me to see EVERY league (and most cup) games Celtic played on Celtic TV, provided me with up to 4 match day tickets on giving notice AND allowed my seat to be taken by someone the charity department at Celtic found to use it. If there were 5000 like me overseas doing something similar that would be 5000 more folk attending and £750K extra (net of Celtic TV subs ) going into putting a team on the park that makes my other £150 to watch on TV more worth paying.

I don’t have a SB now as I gave it to my bro. When we brought in WGS – the bored / hierarchy told us that they would have to downsize the club. Now, to my knowledge – every aspect of the club was downsized apart from 2 key areas – SB prices

I have been astonished at times and grateful at the amount of money my fellow supporters put into supporting Celtic. I met two guys in the Celtic Club after the game who had SBs and travelled up from Stevenage via Manchester for every home game they could make. There was a guy next to me comes down regularly from Shetland for God’s sake. Without guys like that there would be no Celtic of any decent professional level to even talk about on blogs. We owe them big time imo and if we can afford to contribute to support in our own way, but find reasons not to do so, then it is they we are bearing the brunt not the Board, who are simply a conduit to deliver a vast number of supporters’ money into the pockets of a relatively few talented individuals whose job it is to entertain us.

and director CEO fees n bonus’s. Make of that what you will. I know what i made of it….

I answered that point earlier. If you want monkeys pay peanuts.
