Alert on the left, the gravy in Ronny’s pie

761

I’m largely ignoring the defensive lapses of last night. There will be at least two changes for the Champions League, and everyone will be far more attentive. It was, though, a concern that both Kilmarnock goals came as a result of Celtic’s left-hand-side being breached.

Malmo’s Age Hareide will have noted this, and whatever attacking resources he deploys next week are likely to try to exploit a perceived weakness. Ronny will have a choice: Izzie or Charlie? My money’s on the latter.

Tom Rogic didn’t have the perfect game but it was good to see him take so much responsibility. He’s looked like the office junior of the Celtic midfield on previous outings, as did Nir Bitton for most of his early games. If Rogic has genuine talent, we need to let him find his feet in games like these.

Ronny Deila answered all questions after the game but gave little away. I hope his dismissal of injury worries was accurate. Kris Commons is the gravy in his pie. We are capable of beating anyone without Kris, but we need him doing his thing if we are to take a comfortable victory to Sweden.

Yesterday I was looking over Celtic’s form in November 2006 after doing an interview for a French magazine, who are writing a piece on Shunsuke Nakamura. That was the month Naka scored the goal which sent us top of the group and into the knock-out rounds of the Champions League for the first time – with a game to spare, no less.

It’s less well remembered that earlier that month we went out of the League Cup after losing at home to Falkirk on penalties, or that we couldn’t win at Easter Road immediately after the Champions League win.

Indifferent performances and results surround some of our greatest European performances. Getting it right when it counts is what matters.

Canalamar. So you have seen him playing as an out and out defender when was this ? He is a modern full back who is supposed to get up and down the wing if I had a pound for every time he has failed to track back you and I could go for a meal and a few beers and I would still have change left. H.H.

  3. I’ll be sorry if The Green Man has flounced. I was totally amazed at the number of posts he made today effectively saying the same thing. I think it’s fair to say he doesn’t rate Scott Allan. T’would be fun to have him on if Allan was actually playing for us. Personally I have no strong feeling either way. If he comes I’ll judge him on what he does on the pitch for us nothing more nothing less.

Izzy is a gem, he gives us more on the left than any of our wingbacks. If he has to bomb up the wing like he does, there are clear risks. We either accept them, or ask him to stick to defensive duties.

His final baw could be better but

  6. We played Dundee Utd about 4 seasons ago, leaving the ground i asked some DU fans who their No 20 was,Scott Allan was the reply. He was outstanding, great vision, quick feet, looked like the next big thing.Lost his way at W Brom,if he signs, someone must be going IMO,too many midfielders to keep happy.

Izzy has been our only left back for years …plays every minute of every game

A few chanty rastlers in our squad could learn from his application and effort

PF AYR. No fella one game in a blue moon doesnt make him a good defender.Watch how Lustig plays in the full back position and he is not 100% fit. I think another left back might improve Izzi by giving him a bit of competition. H.H.

Rotherham bid for Scott Allan ….that is his level

Or maybe that is our benchmark too

    ………,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

They may have bid for him but he didn’t go to them. Maybe he doesn’t see Rotherham as his level. As I said earlier you’re being a bit irrational.

Only because Stoksey wasn’t playing but it’s good to know I’m no the only one paying attention :)

    JFH,

My advice is go watch our last European away qualifier, you obviously missed it.

Izzy was told to work as a defender and he shut the gobshite haters right up, an impeccable defensive performance at left back, big difference in his game was, he was instructed to be a defender, seriously, I can’t believe you seen that game if you still question his defensive abilities.

As I said, ask him to defend and he puts in a real shift.

Ask him to be a wing back and he needs cover, if the cover fails to materialise then generally your opinion claims kudos.

But I’m thinking you thought it was a penalty :)

One of Scott Allan uncles did some work in our house last year. If we sign Scott and he does as good a job on the pitch as his uncle did in our house, then Ill be happy.

His uncle told me that Scott wanted to go to a London club after being freed be West Brom as he could disappear after a game.

If we get Scott, he’s had a major change of mind about not wanting any hassle off the pitch.

CANALAMAR & PF AYR. So one game makes him a quality defender ? well we will have to agree to disagree on this one. H.H.

  19. Goooood Evening Timland :-)

Me I’m still smartin at last nights result, tactics, team structure etc

I am also firmly in the camp, why are we as Celtic fans accepting the downsizing in Scott Allan, let’s get it right, Scottish Championship player of the year – wow, playing predominately against semi professionals

Where is he going play ? From what I saw last year on the TV, Dylan was a better player when played

I think we do need a change in our midfield, but it includes someone with pace, I don’t see it in him ? I also believe we have a potentially better player in Liam Henderson, but he needs games somewhere to develop ( that is a major problem with many of our own – game time), I was also impressed with the youth player who played 2nd half in the pre- season friendly was it Joe Thompson ?

It doesn’t look like Dylan is part of our plans, and does signing Allan indicate neither does Rogic ?

I do believe our squad needs some major restructure, Boerrigter can go, looks like Stokes out, Scepovic not even making bench now cut our losses ? I would let McGregor go, would also have no objections to Efe moving on

But for all this, I would expect us to use the money being freed up by signing some quality

I do not see this happening at the moment

Don’t dare call me names :-)

Oh – I would also personally drive Johansen to airport free of charge if we are being offered £10m, decent player, whose passing is poor, but the standard we are operating at ?

    OSB,

Maybe I am wrong but we can’t compare the little shit with Allan. His signing was a hammerblow to us in the early nineties.

Always happy to eat ice cream though. Mackies is very good but expensive.

I posted last night that it was never a pen, yer man was falling before Izzy touched him, and the ref had blown for a pen before he hit the ground, feckin cheats ra lot o them.

  24. JfH,

I think your deliberately ignoring the point.

When was the last time you watched Izzy concentrate on being a defender ?

I’m not asking anything else until you can answer that one question.
