Alert on the left, the gravy in Ronny’s pie

761

I’m largely ignoring the defensive lapses of last night. There will be at least two changes for the Champions League, and everyone will be far more attentive. It was, though, a concern that both Kilmarnock goals came as a result of Celtic’s left-hand-side being breached.

Malmo’s Age Hareide will have noted this, and whatever attacking resources he deploys next week are likely to try to exploit a perceived weakness. Ronny will have a choice: Izzie or Charlie? My money’s on the latter.

Tom Rogic didn’t have the perfect game but it was good to see him take so much responsibility. He’s looked like the office junior of the Celtic midfield on previous outings, as did Nir Bitton for most of his early games. If Rogic has genuine talent, we need to let him find his feet in games like these.

Ronny Deila answered all questions after the game but gave little away. I hope his dismissal of injury worries was accurate. Kris Commons is the gravy in his pie. We are capable of beating anyone without Kris, but we need him doing his thing if we are to take a comfortable victory to Sweden.

Yesterday I was looking over Celtic’s form in November 2006 after doing an interview for a French magazine, who are writing a piece on Shunsuke Nakamura. That was the month Naka scored the goal which sent us top of the group and into the knock-out rounds of the Champions League for the first time – with a game to spare, no less.

It’s less well remembered that earlier that month we went out of the League Cup after losing at home to Falkirk on penalties, or that we couldn’t win at Easter Road immediately after the Champions League win.

Indifferent performances and results surround some of our greatest European performances. Getting it right when it counts is what matters.

I can exclusively reveal that Scott Allan has anarcho-socialist tendencies. Happy now?

Depressing Old Firmism. Who cares about Rangers. We have our own problems. Beating a cheap first division side to a signing hardly merits satisfaction.

  9. Got to say after Izzy’s performance in the last qualifier I’m surprised his qualities are still being questioned, ask him to be a defender and as he proved, he can defend, ask him to be a wingback and you need to make sure his forays forward are covered, against Kilmarnock in the first instance his position was left uncovered while he went forward and in for the non-penalty, well what can I say, anyone who thought that was a penalty needs their heeds looked at, it was a disgraceful decision and any Celtic supporter who agreed with the decision is a disgraceful excuse of a supporter, there I said it.

Completely irrational blaming Peter Lawell for Virgil’s departure if it comes to pass. This has been predicted for a year and the player is keen to go to the EPL. There might’ve a chance he will stay to January if we qualify for the CL. Peter Lawell’s job then is to get the best possible price for Birgil and ensure that he is adequately replaced by providing suitable resources.

I’ve also read some posts saying that rather than Scott Allan, the posters would rather we bought a striker. Are they mutually exclusive. Why not buy both and a left back as well.

For those who say we have too many or enough midfielders, I would contend that we have some attacking midfielders and some holding midfielders but, Commons apart, we are short of creative midfielders who can hurt opposing defences with a killer pass. This, I believe, is why Ronny would want to sign Scott Allan.

Canalamar. As we know football is a game of opinions you have your opinion and I have mine Izzy is the weak link in the back four and in any team you try to improve your weaknesses. In my opinion he cant defend and 1 game in a season doesnt make you a defender. Now some folk say he is good going forward that may be so but his final ball is shockingly poor.So I fully understand why Celtic are looking for another left back. H.H.

  17. Theoriginalsadiesbhoy,

Rotherham bid for Scott Allan ….that is his level

Or maybe that is our benchmark too

  18. Oldtim67,

There’s plenty on here who’d rather no see huns develop their careers at our expense, me, I said at the start at the transfer window I’ve send him play twice and I liked what I saw. I did not know he is/was a hun but if it’s true, we’ve signed a few huns in my time who very quickly became ardent Celtic mhen, so I’m happy we’ve signed the bhoy on football merit and the rest we will see.

2 of the above will never start for us again I reckon. Leaves 10 first team midfielder in active service. Allan makes it 11. That seems indulgent. Someone will likely make way.

You are sooooooo wrong. Ha! Ha! Ha!

If we sign Scott Allan, I’ll overdose on jelly and ice cream and not because we have signed a world beater either. Souness signed Judas to humiliate us, Finlay wanted to close us down if he won the lottery. Let’s get the deal done.

  24. Nice quote from the Legend himself

“Jock, if there were two players, one Catholic and one Protestant. Who would you sign?”

    “The Protestant”

    “Why?”

“Because I know that Rangers would never sign the Catholic.”
