Angry statements, the lowest common denominator

442

Issuing an angry statement ahead of a big game is not a bad strategy.  Angry statements resonate with the lowest common denominator, who are often the ones most likely to cause custodians of the club aggravation.

It is a subliminal way to say “We are just like you, we share your hopes and frustrations.”  It is almost as though they anticipate a difficult time coming up soon.  Throw in the mandatory patronising phrase, like, “supporters who have repeatedly proven themselves to be the most loyal in the country” and you are sorted.

Football fans occupying areas further up the food chain, however, will roll their eyes when reading drivel like, “this decision, which beggars belief.”

What struck me most about Newco’s statement last night is that a chink of self-awareness seemed to be dawning, “clubs the length and breadth of the country….. benefitted financially from the presence of our fans.”

This reaches the heart of the matter.  Newco are profitable for every club they play.  They open their wallets and dump a caravan of cash wherever they go, which is good for P&Ls from Kilmarnock to Dingwall.  It’s just, Newco are not actually profitable.

The model works for everyone else, just not for a club who want more success on the field than their income can buy.  They are a cash cow.  But while they can do wonders for the profitability of smaller clubs, they are impotent when it comes to fixing their own profitability problems.

Don’t resent that smaller clubs get a boost when you visit, do what Celtic do – feel good that you can help the rest of the league.  Be generous in spirit and maybe others will reciprocate.

The solution is not to howl at the moon, adept at it, though Newco are, it is to bring spending into alignment with income.  Beat Hibernian at their own £5m football budget game and respect will follow.

Raffle to play in an 11-a-side game at Celtic Park

An incredible opportunity to play on the hallowed turf at Celtic Park around the end of the current season 2017-18, in Club sponsor Intelligent Car Leasing’s match.

You will be provided with complimentary Celtic kit and receive the full match-day experience including arrival through the front door, access to the dressing room and proudly walking down the tunnel to enter the famous field of play.

Both squads will be managed by a former Celtic player. The game will take place on 16 May, kick off 11:00. All monies raised will be donated to Celtic FC Foundation, a registered Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (number SC024648).

To enter the raffle, make a minimum donation of £5 to the Foundation at this MyDonate page.  Then send your donation confirmation email to this address: celticquicknews@gmail.com

The opportunity to play on Celtic Park is just beyond words.  I did it a few years ago, the memories will live forever, as will the photographs.  The experience of preparing in the dressing room, as so many greats have done before, was fabulous.

You can enter for yourself, or gift the prize to someone you know aged 18 or over. Competition closes at 15:00 this Friday, 27th.

Good luck!

  1. I for one wouldn’t mind Stevie G going to sevco!

We have first hand experience of how an ex-Liverpool legend performs in Glasgow as a rookie manager, and we were in far better financial health than they are, with far more tolerant fans.

They didn’t have the money to pay for David Bates so unless Glibby won Tuesday’s Euromillions it is all level 5 pie-in-the-Sky.

  2. If Steven Gerrard is the next manager, over at Ibrox, fine,it’s all about Celtic for me, nothing else, quality footballer’s coming to the club, next season,no more loans, also I can see a few of the present squad moving on this Summer,as someone posted the other day, there is to much talk about other clubs, and individuals, rather than Celtic Football Club, and he is right, there is a lot of things that need to be addressed inside the Stadium, and sticking up for our own Fans, and the SFA, that’s just a few that comes to my mind.Celtic Celtic that’s the club for me.

  3. Big Packy, that was as I remember it too from the 60s. Times have changed since then. HH

  4. I can only assume that the Lying King is thinking that maybe Brendan would take pity on Stevie G for old time’s sake.

If so, he’s forgotten poor Stevie’ s slip against Chelsea back in the day.

  5. Stevie G can’t help but be tempted by the Sevco managers job considering how well all their former managers are doing these days…

    Mark Warburton : Currently unemployed

Pedro Caravan : currently has a 20% win average with the Blue Cross

    Stuart McCall : Currently unemployed

    Kenny McDowall : Currently M.I.A

Ally McMoist : Currently picking balls out of hedges

You can’t help but be impressed:)))

  6. Kev Jungle, aye I remember well the rivers of pish, and it definitely didn’t cost me £49. Memories, eh. HH

  8. There’s no chance of Stevie Gerrard going to Poundland. It’s all about fleecing the gullibillies.

    Carry on fleecing. HH

  9. So Celtic supporting Steven Gerrard is going from Liverpool under-18’s to Sevco.

Scott Arfield, contracted to Burnley is undergoing a medical and negotiating a deal to go to Sevco instead of preparing for their game against Brighton on Saturday.

Allan McGregor(who has conceded 64 goals this season), contracted to Hull is undergoing a medical and negotiating a deal to go to Sevco instead of preparing for their game against Cardiff on Saturday.

Who’d have guessed they were selling season tickets and lining up to watch us win 7 in a row on Sunday?

No negative stories about Celtic appearing so let’s make top some moonbeams about Sevco …..

  10. My memory of the old Glasgow derbies was the crowds were split almost 50/50; at all 3 grounds. In 1967, I saw Celts win the league at Ibrox with a 2~2 draw, from the enclosure under the main stand. The rain was torrential but we were singing in it. Celts occupied nearly half the main stand, all of the Celtic end, and a chunk of the “derry”.

I clearly remember a few games at CP when the huns had about a quarter of the jungle. This was in the days of cairry oots, so it’s quite remarkable there was very little serious bother.

  12. Big Yogi said the other night that sevco better hurry up as he had spoken to Arfield and there were other big clubs after him down south probably offering more money…..

  13. Scott Arfield could make himself anything between,3 to 5 million with a signing on fee,at a host of English clubs.Add in wages of around 40 grand a week.Chicken feed to these clubs. It does not take much working out to think anyone from the EPL,with a decent reputation as a middle of the road, type of player, the kind so many teams can afford, would need to have serious brain damage to sign for the Huns.SAme with Gerrard.

It really beggars belief that these stories are being bandied about by a club that could not raise 1 million for Murphy,or less for Docherty.

I hope they do.With that sort of outlay, the end can only come quicker, but I would not bet on any of the moonbeams coming to fruition.

I think the new strip is a belter.

  14. 2 tickets secured for the Hamdump Mosh Pit on 19th May!

  15. As Bada suggests Stevie G’s first phone call would be to Brendan whom, I believe, would give him an honest appraisal of the situation and the detriment such a move would have in career progression without actually bad mouthing sevco.

Also football is littered with great players who are crap managers, being a brilliant player guarantees very little as a manager.

  16. Just back from CP TO, huge queue for Cup Final tickets. Asked how long it would take and was told 3 hours. Heavens opened, now back home waiting in queue to order online at the extra £16 it will cost me.

Surprised so many there, it’s not first come first served fro those who meet criteria like semi final, if you meet criteria you are guaranteed ticket.

  17. Morning Bhoys, wasn’t there a bhoy on here tipping Casa Tall for a race at Cheltenham( triumph hurdle) i think? Runs at Perth today, just saying :-) HH

Oh! The irony! KevJ is slagged because…”he’s never a Celtic fan…” and yet…and yet..steven gerrard is a big Celtic fan…pure tosh!

KevJ…keep it lit sir and keep winding them up…btw-never ever saw a Lisbon Lion entering or leaving Parkhead with a pair of £49 headphones covering his ears…

Aye! The battle’s over, the rebels have gone…

That was a tip for Cheltenham by Phyllis Dietrichson

Trained by Tom George. It was a big outsider at Cheltenham but this is a more realistic target at Perth

On the subject of Tom George I was told to back his horse Good Man Jim in the 5.35 at Warwick. Its 9/4 favourite having been backed overnight from 6/1.A guy that follows the point to point scene in Ireland was very impressed by it the day it won its Point. It was sold after for big money
