Angry statements, the lowest common denominator

442

Issuing an angry statement ahead of a big game is not a bad strategy.  Angry statements resonate with the lowest common denominator, who are often the ones most likely to cause custodians of the club aggravation.

It is a subliminal way to say “We are just like you, we share your hopes and frustrations.”  It is almost as though they anticipate a difficult time coming up soon.  Throw in the mandatory patronising phrase, like, “supporters who have repeatedly proven themselves to be the most loyal in the country” and you are sorted.

Football fans occupying areas further up the food chain, however, will roll their eyes when reading drivel like, “this decision, which beggars belief.”

What struck me most about Newco’s statement last night is that a chink of self-awareness seemed to be dawning, “clubs the length and breadth of the country….. benefitted financially from the presence of our fans.”

This reaches the heart of the matter.  Newco are profitable for every club they play.  They open their wallets and dump a caravan of cash wherever they go, which is good for P&Ls from Kilmarnock to Dingwall.  It’s just, Newco are not actually profitable.

The model works for everyone else, just not for a club who want more success on the field than their income can buy.  They are a cash cow.  But while they can do wonders for the profitability of smaller clubs, they are impotent when it comes to fixing their own profitability problems.

Don’t resent that smaller clubs get a boost when you visit, do what Celtic do – feel good that you can help the rest of the league.  Be generous in spirit and maybe others will reciprocate.

The solution is not to howl at the moon, adept at it, though Newco are, it is to bring spending into alignment with income.  Beat Hibernian at their own £5m football budget game and respect will follow.

Raffle to play in an 11-a-side game at Celtic Park

An incredible opportunity to play on the hallowed turf at Celtic Park around the end of the current season 2017-18, in Club sponsor Intelligent Car Leasing’s match.

You will be provided with complimentary Celtic kit and receive the full match-day experience including arrival through the front door, access to the dressing room and proudly walking down the tunnel to enter the famous field of play.

Both squads will be managed by a former Celtic player. The game will take place on 16 May, kick off 11:00. All monies raised will be donated to Celtic FC Foundation, a registered Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (number SC024648).

To enter the raffle, make a minimum donation of £5 to the Foundation at this MyDonate page.  Then send your donation confirmation email to this address: celticquicknews@gmail.com

The opportunity to play on Celtic Park is just beyond words.  I did it a few years ago, the memories will live forever, as will the photographs.  The experience of preparing in the dressing room, as so many greats have done before, was fabulous.

You can enter for yourself, or gift the prize to someone you know aged 18 or over. Competition closes at 15:00 this Friday, 27th.

Good luck!

  1. PRESTONPANS BHOYS on 25TH APRIL 2018 10:20 PM

They had the full “Rangers end” and sometimes a wee bit more.

    KTF

  2. PB – yes about a quarter of front stand and a quarter of The Jungle, I have watched us in the old enclosure and Govan Stand at Ibrox, in our allocated areas back in the day.

  3. I remember one of my early hun games in the jungle about 75/76 and there was huns in the jungle, some bottle throwing too if I remember correctly, when they had the full rangers end and scored I used to be sick looking up there, like a can of angry ugly unspeakable worms:(((

  4. !!BADA BING!! on 25TH APRIL 2018 10:29 PM,

There was no probs with them in the KEVJ Jungle at that time (Whit’s Kev Daein Tom? Whit’s He Daein??? …

Well, Kev was ‘Posted Missing’ that day but, surprise surprise….

  5. The huns filled the rangers end and a quarter of the main stand. I can’t ever remember them in the jungle. Some told me they were.

Given the turnstile arrangements for the jungle it’s difficult to see how it could have worked.

Going to go to the Hun blogs and ask.

  6. If there were no huns there, The Torch and The Spur provided the ‘entertainment’ in the ole Jungle…

  7. prestonpans bhoys on

    Bada,

yeah I do have vague memories of the main stand and there was something in my head about the jungle but I thought it was my memory playing tricks…..

  8. ‘There is nothing special out there’ – Nevin unimpressed by Real

“How do they do it?” said BBC Radio 5 live football analyst and former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin.

“They weren’t brilliant – they have some incredible individual players. But you watch some other teams and you are blown away by them as a collective.

“But for Real there is nothing spectacularly special out there apart from Cristiano Ronaldo, maybe Marcelo, and the rest of them are very good players playing quite well.

    ———

Double UCL Champions, on course for a 3rd in a row and a team full of superstars and world cup winners etc but wee Pat Nevin in his commentary box has it sussed.

I only have Clydebank cooncil telly. Waiting for the highlights on STV at 11.

Kate and Bernadette send their love. They thought you were a perfect host, and Bar67 a perfect venue for a pair of Dalmuir publicans. Crackin sisters.

  10. St Stivs,

They were in the last section near their own end of the Jungle – small section, nowhere near, half, quarter or even a fifth of the Jungle. The day, what’s his name, Alex Miller, scored the winner in the last minute for their first win in years…

That was the last they ever appeared in the Jungle – still not KevJ’s

  11. Calton.

That was the first time I saw the huns beat us. Got a clear memory of windy miller last seconds goal from a Willie Johnston thrown in. I was in 2-3 Celtic end looking right at it and can’t recall huns in the jungle.

    Going to search more.

    Keep it lit

Their bar takings boom when Celtic play in Europe on tv in their pub. Celtic are good business for the Dalmuir economy.

See you at departures lounge. First to the bar is on the Guinness. ????????

  13. SAINT STIVS on 25TH APRIL 2018 10:50 PM,

They were there that day, no problems even after they scored but, they were there.

I think it was a bit like our fans being in ‘The Derry’ at Ibrox.

Can remember my Da, who was teetotal, explaining how the Celtic & Huns fans were enchanging swally over the polis line to their pals.

Maybe some of the Older (Tontine Tim or HebCelt) can remember this?

Now, the huns end was different.

  14. DD-SS – The Miller goal , was when Davie Provan stood in front of Johnston, who usually put a long shy into the box, but threw it 20 yards square and he got lucky

I am in the canny see what you see in Judith camp. Seems like a collective madness to me. I see her as quite Witch like. I wonder if she has cast a spell on her CQN lovers here.

    Review

Celtic did not deserve to lose this game. In the first half bad finishing had cost them dearly and in the second Murdo MacLeod had a fine goal controversially disallowed which would have given Celtic a 2-1 lead and this incident was covered in the media for weeks after.

With time running out Alex Miller scored the winner with a spectacular looping shot over Bonner.

You are correct! i remember it distinctly as a young lhad and being extremely

miffed at the fact they let huns anywhere near our sacred jungle.

The stickys end or the main stand didn’t matter to us but the jungle was ours.

And there was a bit of bother in the second half and the usual sight of them

being led away with arms up their backs.

  19. The Huns (Cos Sevco hadn’t been invented then) used to congregate between the Huns end and the first exit to head under the Jungle.

huge amount of huns that day, official attendance 58000. capacity 67,000. not a space in the ground.

    see huns in main stand,

    BIG PACKY – from earlier…

In The Plains, my dad and the other ‘gentlemen’ of the village sung almost the same version as you remember. My recollection (from when I was wee), which we still use, was:

“…So we’re off to Dublin in the green in the green, in the green, where the helmets glisten in the sun. Where bayonets slash the Orange Sash, to the echo of a Thompson Gun…”

The positioning of our wee Tim enclave of The Plains, surrounded as we have long been by the orange holes of Caldercruix, Clarkston (booooooo) and Airdrie perhaps lend an extra edge of bitterness to the lyrics we (to this day) use.
