Appetites wetted, consequence of intimidation

608

For some, short holidays are over. Batteries recharged, appetites wetted. The international break is not the period of worldwide travel and mockery it is for others. If you think you are champing at the bit to get to Celtic Park on Saturday, Scott Brown and Kolo Toure could probably sprint there from Lennoxtown right now.

For others it will be a chance to put disappointments behind them. A few (well, maybe just Moussa) will return having achieved new heights for their country. As ever, Tom Rogic will pitch with jetlag having played in two continents in the last six days.

You know they will all want to see and impress Brendan. This is the way of it at Lennoxtown right now. They are bursting a gut at training to get into the team. Be alarmed, Motherwell.

You know when your PR is on nationwide TV, intemperate and pointy, that you are in special hands. Asking the same question four different ways lacks courtesy (and a whole lot more), but PR can’t let the journo leave knowing he’s got what he wanted from the encounter. I’m no PR expert, but you know when you see someone mis-control a proverbial back pass.

Still angry at that newspaper’s attack on Celtic yesterday. I didn’t buy it, so didn’t realise at the time they printed Peter Lawwell’s home address. You know what you are doing when you publish someone’s home address.  It rarely happens because the consequences are so uncontrollable.

It’s one of the most insidious acts legally possible by a newspaper. It has an immediate consequence of intimidation for the family – that’s a given when you make the decision to print something several hundred thousand times.  Utterly deplorable.  We are back in the era where attacks were incited on Neil Lennon.

Apologies for issues accessing the blog recently.  I’m on the case.

Good Morning Bhoys from a damp Central Scotland. PETEC Does God Exist ? Well he certainly does for me I have have had so many experiences in my life I have no doubts what so ever that God exists I just love the Bible I am no brain of Britain and attend Bible classes which help me to understand it better and the classes I find really enjoyable .I was for a good few years a lapsed Catholic but I returned to the faith about 10 years ago and I find it a wonderful faith and a great way to live my life. This life will decide where we spend our eternal life and is not a trial run.I would encourage any lapsed catholic to go back to the Church and find out for yourself what a loving God we worship and how the Church can make your life so much more fullfilling. Big JimmyThe VATMAN disnae take prisoners (he makes them); if my VAT return isnae paid bang on time, I get a letter within the week. Various threats and penalties included. If they have completed their VAT returns and are 2 quarters behind then I am sure “correspondence” will be on-going and they will be at the “gies the money or else” stage. That means Christmas will be cancelled for them. If they don’t have the money legal proceedings and administration won’t be far behind; unless, of course, Big Mikey A is persuaded to complete some nefarious deal that will exile Glib and Shameless to Jo’burg for good!

Celtic are more than a football club: More than a set of players, a balance sheet, a league position or a set of bragging rights in good times and a set of regrets in bad times.

What we are was summed up in just 18 words at the very beginning:

“A football club will be formed for the maintenance of dinner tables for the children and the unemployed.”

That remains the case to this day.

Many of us tend to ” back off ” on that issue and to accept current ” modern ” attitudes.

    Good Morning Again.

I am only catching up and first of all my thoughts and prayers are with Minx’s uncle Charlie and DD’s father in law.

Losing a loved one is always hard but as long as they are remembered and cherished they are always really with you inside.

My late father was a great admirer of Hugh McIlvanney and as a boy I was regularly given compendiums of McIlvanney’s writings to read. His use of words and his descriptive abilities are at times quite brilliant. He can tell a story in a way that really puts you in the ring or on the pitch.

However, for many Big Hugh was NOT peerless.

The late great John Rafferty (if I recall correctly he was a relation of our own PF Ayr) was every bit as lauded and revered as a scribe and was seen as every bit as masterly as McIlvanney when it came to sports writing.

However, as he worked for more “provincial” papers and was of a slightly older generation he did not receive the nationwide McIlvanney received with the Observer and the Times.

I have read the recent article on McIlvanney where he gives his impression of Graeme Souness.

Taking all bias aside, Souness was indeed a great player but I am afraid that Hugh is totally wrong in my opinion when he says that Souness deserves a place at the very top table of midfielders.

In particular, he is absolutely wrong in his assertion that Rivellino would have had to make way for Souness in the Brazilian team of 1970. That is complete and utter nonsense as, with all due respect to the Scotsman, he would have played second fiddle to Riva in every aspect of being a football player, a captain and an influence on the game. Souness is not fit to lace Rivellino’s boots in any department and that includes the ability to grow a memorable moustache!

If you go to South America and ask many many world recognised footballers from Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Peru, Chile and elsewhere who has had the greatest influence on the modern game of football and in the style of play and mentality of the top football players of today, not a single soul will utter the name of Graeme Souness.

On the other hand, why not go and grab a cup of coffee, take twenty minutes out of your day, click on the following link and see why many argue that that honour belongs to ” The Little King of the Park!”

With a nod of recognition to big Hugh.
