Armageddon-SPL strong at the bottom

788

Dundee are nine points adrift at the bottom of the SPL but made a good fist of it against Celtic last night, after a rocky start.  They held their own for a good 30 minutes either side of the interval.  They are clearly the worst team in the league but they are a pretty decent worst team.  Armageddon-SPL is strong at the bottom end.

You and I know the Celtic support, as a group and to any statistically significant level, are vastly better behaved than any supporters of any other large football club.  This is a source of enormous pride but comes at a cost.  Over 20 years later you will still hear about fruit thrown by one idiot, I do.  This is a good thing.  It means that there has been little to talk about these past 20 years.

When you benefit from the greatest reputation in football you are held to the highest standards.  No one will blame Chelsea fans when we drop the ball.  I’ve heard no reports of damage or injury at Dens last night, but 20 years from now someone will tell you what was said by a representative of Dundee today.  This will be a good thing.

From ‘afar’ exactly what ‘sectarianism’ was evident from the Celtic support last night?

  2. 16 roads - Neil Lennon walks on water. on

That Dundee mob must have made a brave few quid out of the Celtic support last night.

Perhaps they should hand back all the ticket money in protest considering how annoyed they appear to be.

Even Dundee fan in that ground last night was stone cold sober by the way.

Honestly didn’t see anyone drinking inside the stadium last night and that included being in the toilets at half time.

Very sad and one would hope that a combination of stewards, police and CCTV would identify such people…….

There was a Brother Walfrid taught at my school in the late 60′s and I have to say he went down a bit in my esteem when aged 12 I realised he and the founder of Celtic were not one and the same.

  8. Paul67,

It only takes a few to spoil it for everyone.

Was reading back at the last blog, and feared another songs debate, thankfully not, but the theme is very relevant to me at this time. There was a guy who used to be the convener of the 33Club bus in Paisley in the sixties, seventies and early eighties. He followed Celtic, home and away, and in Europe (a guy who convinced his wife to morph Lisbon’67 into their honeymoon!). Probably known to older CQN’ers involved in the CSA at the time.

One day on the bus, he took exception to a few pups singin reb songs (it wasn’t his scene) and with no back-up from anyone else, called it a day. When I say called it a day, that’s exactly how strongly he felt. Never went on the bus again, listened to games on the radio, watched every Celtic game on the TV, and his love for Celtic never died.

Yesterday, sadly, he passed away. Gerry Milne R.I.P

I watched the game on telly and when not getting annoyed by Craigan and enjoying a generally good show by the Bhoys I too was struck by how ‘raucous’ it seemed. I accept some were out of order – and I suspect rather more than the four who were lifted come into that category.

But the game – and your post reminded me of when I went with my uncle Alex to a match in the early eighties. It was Alex’ first non-big match since booze was banned in 81 – it must have been around 83 and it was at Fir Park and he remarked on how quiet things were compared to when he’d last been on a regular basis c.79. Sure the crowd under the roof made a lot of noise but generally the crowd just watched the game and made noise only when we scored (6 on the particular day). I hadn’t thought about things as all I’d recently thought was that the crowds were more sober than they’d been.

And yet now I think of things when I went as a child, adescent and young man the whole atmosphere was different. Raucous, occasionally scary but usually great, life affirming experiences. I am pretty sure that when I went to Dens on the early seventies that if only four of the visiting fans had been lifted the crowd/security chief would have said nothing. Times have changed and maybe things have become more genteel than I’d thought. Sure that when I was 21 and not 51 I’d have thought last night was great

    Celtic mac,

When state took over from charity for the starving of the east end brother Walfrid became unemployed on that front.

In fact Celtic FC booted brother Walfrids ethos out as soon as they seen how quickly they could turn a buck, so don’t try spout yer condescending claptrap with me, appeasing middle class sensibilities does not impress me. Had the same effort demanding the rights of Celtic support been made, that was put into culturing the charitable reputation, we would have come a lot further, they reaped the rewards of a divided society and played the game in the name of capitalism.

I have to be honest and state that I did not celebrare with gusto this year due to the birth of the saviour. The gusto came from combining it with the death of the huns and the subsequent freak show. I will be doing so again next week. I think the fabric of Scottish society is well aware of this.
