Armstrong deal good portent for Celtic signings

334

The mood around Celtic Park was a bit sombre when Virgil van Dijk was scouted by Southampton.  Virgil looked like he was scared to break a fingernail in the capitulation against Legia Warsaw; we lost out on Champions League qualification, although the player was heading south anyway.

With Stuart Armstrong being measured for a red and white outfit, there is significantly less stress at Celtic.  Stuart delivered for Celtic during his three years at the club, but he left unable to command a regular starting place in the team.  We are selling a fringe player who has one season left on his contract for a fee which reflects the inflated English transfer market.

Celtic have managed this playing asset very well.  Consequently, they have more money available to invest in the team.  It is also worth noting that we could have sold the player a year ago, but resisted as Brendan Rodgers did not have back fill.  The manager has been preparing for this scenario since.  This should be an enjoyable summer for the Celtic support.

  1. I lived and worked on Milan all through the 1990s. The wife of one of the Milan players was seriously ill on our Hospital. Every day different Milan players came to visit her. Every day Franco Baresi was with them or came on his own. Great player. Great man. Nice man.

    TONTINE TIM,

I thought Baxter was a football player. I would have loved to see him in the Hoops. The entertainment he would have provided with Jinky and backed up by Bobby Murdoch and wee Bertie.

*I can understand that, there’s lots of Celtic supporters feel the same. I had an acquaintance that followed Celtic all over Scotland, even went tae Lisbon and when we were scheitd watched the reserves and also watched the national side including the every other year Wembley trip and he thought baxter was brilliant.

However, I just couldnae see it, good player aye but not world class. When he went to engand lots of Scottish lads had thrived down there including his close friend Paddy Crerand who won 2 Titles, 1 FA Cup, 2 Charity shields and of course the Big Cup, baxter flopped.

His transfer to Sunderland was the highest ever paid to a Scottish club at the time; his debut was in the famous 5-0 hiding fae us where Bobby Murdoch stole the show.

After 2 seasons he was off to Forest for a record club fee in what has been described as “probably the worst transfer in Forest’s history”.

After 49 appearances, he left Forest in May 1969 to return to hades, the smsm went intae overdrive stating the traffic in Glasgow stopped when they heard of his return. He scored on his debut and yet with 18 months he had retired from the game after being freed.

Could/would he have played for us, why not, unlike some of his club mates his close friends included big Billy, Pat Crerand and Mike Jackson.

Would he have been allowed to participate in his lifestyle, highly unlikely?

Similarly to another flawed player who also came from a blue collar area, his da was a hud carrier as opposed tae baxters working down the pits, often erroneously labelled a genius as well gascoine only enjoyed his party image because of who he played for.

  4. Imo, while Moussa and KT are great talents, they will have to move to a better league to really flourish. Not that I want either to leave but KT especially at the very least would get a better level pf protection than the MIBs afford him here.

  5. TT – I’d have loved to have seen BB playing for us. What a midfield that would have been!

  7. For me that was a terrible decision to award Iran a penalty.

And Iran have been a terrible team tonight .They have just about disputed every decision made by the referee .

  8. TONTINE TIM,

I was at the Sunderland game. I thought that was John Hughes’ big day.

Imo, Baxter had the ability. He squandered it through drink. He would have been more at home at Celtic Park, in that he played football the Glasgow Celtic way.

  9. Suffering Jesus.

UEFA said about Tierney: “At 20, Tierney has already played over 100 matches for Celtic and captained Scotland. Rated the best British-born left-back of his generation, the youngster’s assist for Leigh Griffiths’ goal in the 3-0 win at Anderlecht was Tierney at his swashbuckling best.”

The trouble is some of the referees are idiots and don’t know how to use it. It has to be a clear and obvious mistake to change the decision. It’s not hard.

Pique red for me, 2 foot tackle caught his left ankle.

    ……………………..

Have the referees been told to keep red cards out of this tournament.

    Seems that way.

Later on a Morrocan player two-footed from behind & not even a yellow, which probably means he was already on a yellow.

Spain v Morroco game was like a Scottish Junior game.

Certain there will be barnies in the tunnel stories later.

  12. Let’s be honest, Portugal are dire to watch. Pepe is a thug and a cheat; Quaresma dived more than Tom Daley and the rest except Ronaldo are bang average in relation to others at the tournament. CR saves them. The penalty he was awarded – he was on his way down before he hit the 2nd player. Never a pen IMHO.

The red card VAR – Ronaldo didn’t connect and got away with a yellow, BUT there was intent so he should have been given red. Other way about? It would have been red. I hope they go out in the next round.

I agree that the Iran pen was a terrible decision, but it was an awful decision to award the Portugal penalty too.

I think the person doing the VAR didn’t know the rules, that is has to be a clear and obvious error by the referee, the referee’s initial decision in both cases not to award a penalty seemed correct to me, why he would change it after looking at it again at request of CAR is baffling.

Totally agree. Tonight showed how VAR gets the correct decision, the Spain goal which was definitely onside, and the Iran penalty which wasn’t. The latter involved the referee reviewing, the former the guys in the VAR studio. The referee in Portugal v Iran game was incompetent and VAR cannot rectify for that.

David, I agree, it’s the VAR who don’t seem to understand the rules also.

What about ref today, he refused to change his mind and still gave penalty to Saudis, after watching it and that It was clear that he had made a mistake and it wasn’t a pen. VAR got that one correct but ref refused to admit he was wrong.

Bada Bing at 5.19 about the best non Celtic players with Stojkivic (spelling) in your list. Was it Dragan Stojkivic of Red Star?

When Red Star played us in a friendly , I think it was on a boxing day, in 1989 or 1990, he was incredible.

I completely agree with you , what a player . We coud not get near him and he scored a brillant goal. Lubo reminded me of him . Although Lubo was exceptional , Stojkovic was even better which is the greatest compliment I could pay him.

Re KT totally agree… not many full backs at his age are better, even Robertson who I like and has come on leaps & bounds still isn’t as good as Kieran going forward and especially defensively

    Bigyinmilan

Nice to hear that about Baresi, I bow to the much more informed opinions of our more experienced posters but Celtic apart Chiellini (?) & Ramos are two of the best around these days as for Celtic loved big Paul Elliott for the fleeting time we had him and loved big Mick McCarthy for being big Mick McCarthy …. Marc Reiper and Bobo for being Bobo…. put a decent sweeper next to big Bobo (like a Baresi) there is your defence :-)

I agree the rules seemed to be unknown to whoever controlled the VAR.

Also thought the ref was incompetent and seemed to think if he was told to look at replay his original decision must have been incorrect.

‘RE PLAYERS disputing ref decisions and making the VAR sign Didier deign a suggested booking players who do so like they started to do to players who showed imaginary yellow card.
