Armstrong deal good portent for Celtic signings

334

The mood around Celtic Park was a bit sombre when Virgil van Dijk was scouted by Southampton.  Virgil looked like he was scared to break a fingernail in the capitulation against Legia Warsaw; we lost out on Champions League qualification, although the player was heading south anyway.

With Stuart Armstrong being measured for a red and white outfit, there is significantly less stress at Celtic.  Stuart delivered for Celtic during his three years at the club, but he left unable to command a regular starting place in the team.  We are selling a fringe player who has one season left on his contract for a fee which reflects the inflated English transfer market.

Celtic have managed this playing asset very well.  Consequently, they have more money available to invest in the team.  It is also worth noting that we could have sold the player a year ago, but resisted as Brendan Rodgers did not have back fill.  The manager has been preparing for this scenario since.  This should be an enjoyable summer for the Celtic support.

If you ask questions, you risk getting answered.

It’s quite a simple formula really.

Now, if you think it’s nonsense- you might want to risk venturing an opinion of how many Lions you would see replaced by the likes of Jimmy Case, Sammy Lee and Emlyn Hughes.

I think the finest British footballer was George Best. Since I’m pretty sure I’ve never asked anyone their religion, and certainly not George,I’m not sure if that makes me a Catholic bigot or not.

Good Read from James. Here’s hoping.

  4. An earlier post, mentioned Gornik of Poland and Lubanski in 1969 gubbing the Hun, and going to the 2nd leg at ipox with his Polish mate.

Back then i was almost 15, my Da ( great Celtic man), knew that CHUMP Derek Johnstone thru Johnstones uncle. My Da got two Main Stand Tickets (Freebies) for the game at Ipox for him and I.

in the 1st leg in Poland, Gornik gubbed the Hun 3-1. but because of their away goal the Huns were favourites to go through, and that very unstable support of theirs thought likewise, as they were VERY confident heading into the 2nd Leg. Obviously, TOO feckin confident LOL. As Gornik tore them apart 3-1 at Ip[ox that night. My Da and I couldn’t loudly cheer the Fab fitba that Gornik were playing, especially Lubanski who I believe scored 2 goals that night. I may be wrong, but Fat Derek might have scored the 1st goal that night, which really did put the Huns in POLE Position ( Pun Intended) ? So Gornik went thru 6-2 on aggregate. A Great night was had by me and my Da.

Another “result” of that European loss was that a certain Mr White ( No ….not Desmond or Craig)…but Davie White who was the Huns manager was sacked within the next 48/72 hours or so ( If I remember correctly ?) Nothing unusual there you may think, but again IF I remember correctly, Davie White had the Huns sitting at the Top of the Scottish League…UNBEATEN. I can remember any hun pals I had at that time believed that white deserved to be sacked, cos Gornik tore them apart ?

I also recall that i was very taken with the Gornik strip that night, the Jersey was White, with ( Maroon /Red/Brown ???) Strip running down from the neck to the cuffs ?

i went into school the next day ranting and raving about Gornik and Mr Lubanski.

earlier yesterday, when posting about the greatest imho, PELE and many other truly great players, I did neglect to mention Eusebio by name, but I did state “many others”. I sort of went aff eusebio when later in life it emerged, that he was a pal of Wullie Henderson of the Huns, and the Huns were his 2nd Fav team……OR so the SMSM Claimed ?

I’m sure JINKY tried to get Eusebio to join him at Celtic. Obviously without success. I don’t think Johnstone would have been playing for the huns in 69,maybe just before his time

BT’s,Eusebio is another player who, like Gerd Muller, was near as dammit a goal a game player. Something like 740 in 750 games.

That’s phenomenal, especially when you consider the “tactics” that were allowed back then.

  7. Good morning friends. Another beautiful morning here in EK. 2018 is certainly heading to be the best summer weather in many a year; been more or less dry and warm since the weekend before the cup final. Wonder is Stuart will actually officially leave us today?

Anyways, time for my cycle to work. Oh and just 3 more sleeps till Aberdour ;-)

Bfdj’s first game for Huns was 1970 league cup final?

G st that shoved down our throats as often as the great 1966 world cup triumph

  9. BMCUWP,

Your right mate, I was wrong, as Johnstone didn’t start in either legs v Gornik ( I haven’t checked if he was maybe an unused sub ?

According to a Hun site, the attendance at Ipox that night was 69,998…PLUS an two Tims ( Me and ma Da)….so 72,000.on November 12th 1969.

Knowing that attendance makes it even better for me, thinking about 69,998 Scummy Huns witnessing their scummy mob getting ripped apart. LOL

of course Johnstone scored the winner v Celtic in League Cup Final in 1970 aged 17 , so the Gornik games were probably just before his “Time” ?

On another note, is there some kind of HOOT this Saturday in the BV ?..If yes, can I come ?

  11. By the way, Eusebio and Gerd Muller weren’t the ONLY ones that “Scored” on a Regular basis ! LOL

    Methinks I better stop there.

I once played as centre Forward ( for younger folk…that means Striker), during a game and we won either 10-0 or 10-1 ( I think we were playing Panama ?).

I playing as the main striker for my team…NEVER Scored a goal that day ! shameful you think…but there’s more.

I LAID on about 7 or 8 goals that day and my team mates carried me off shoulder high, I got Man of the Match etc. What a game I had. I was Showboating at times, and dribbling round defenders and their Goalie, and even when faced with an empty Goal, I was passing the Ball to team mates to finish aff.

Nevertheless…Centre Forward..your Team score 10…and I don’t score ?…Utterly ashamed of myself i am til this day LOL.

Let’s hope it gets him his P45.

  17. TONTINE TIM,

I was at another game in Sunderland. It was a preseason friendly on a Saturday afternoon, circa 1966. I think Baxter would still have been in Govan. John Hughes had one of his unstoppable days, if memory serves. I think the score was 5-1.

    Gary 67,

Could they win the Petrofac Cup though?

Only if they played Sevco in the final

  19. I very much doubt Eusebio was a closet hun.

Remember going to Ibrox to see Benfica playing Rangers in the early 60’s ,think it was a friendly?

Eusebio was getting such a torrent of unwarranted horrendous abuse(racist) from the great unwashed that he actually to stopped mid-game to appeal to the crowd to shut it .

He is another right up there with the greats.

  20. Not often does Auldheid get his facts wrong but he said that a Judicial Panel Disciplinary Tribunal will take place today concerning a wrongly granted License.

If Auldheid was correct, then SOMEONE in the MSSM would have reported this rather important even and one of the many people who take their views from the MSSM would have mentioned it . There is, instead, a deathly silence .

  21. Baxter.

One night after his playing days Baxter tried on his Drunken Arrogant crap ” Do you know who I am pish ” ?…with ma Faither.

Ma Da was close to bursting him.that night…….Baxter soon realised he was trying to mess with the wrong Man.

Baxter ..Whit a Chump !…… Ma Da was/is CHAMP !

I came across Baxter one Saturday afternoon in a pub at the bottom of Hope St. Me and my mate observed as Baxter was being loud etc, and in the company of another Guy and a good looking woman.

For about an hour he was ordering “Doubles this and Glasses of that etc”, trying to be Billy Big Time ?

Soon after, he was at it again, and telling the Barman to also take a drink etc. When it came to pay, Baxter claimed he had no money .

He then swiped the womans coins that she had laid out on the Bar, as she was playing the Fruit Machine…she wasn’t pleased !

Me and my Tim mate just laughed at the arrogant daft Hun.

Still a very good player though.

  25. Best ever British player I think has to be George Best.

The most consistently great player I ever saw was van Basten. He produced genius just about every week. Won the Ballon d’Or 3 times, and retired due to injury at 28. He stood out in a team which included Gullit, Rijkaard, Baresi, and Maldini.

The players I am happiest to have seen are Cruyff, who just changed the game of football, and Rivera. Rivera was a beautiful player, a craftsman, a genius. I remember that he nutmegged Bobby Murdoch at Celtic Park in the Big Cup quarters in 1969. Ran the game. Respect.

Note the Zibi Boniek references —

IMO – A very good player .. Seriously quick ..Italian legend has him down as being very opinionated , vociferous, independent and not that bothered about adhering to tactics . History has him being one of the Juve players who really really didn’t want to play the game at Heysel..He gave his winning bonus (and more ) to the fund for the victims .
