Attitude for Tynecastle

2311

I watched Hearts batter Pat Fenlon’s Hibs into submission at Easter Road last month.  They are not a good team but they have elbows and commitment, often the key resources in a football game.  With our interest in the League Cup and Europe curtailed, and the league title a sure thing, it is enormously important that we remain in the Scottish Cup into the New Year.

Attitude is the most important attribute for Celtic this weekend.

Things you don’t expect to do when you start blogging: I took four calls from journos yesterday asking if I knew a Celtic fan prepared to go on record as an IRA supporter!  I don’t, for the record, not one, so no one else should bother checking.  Lack of support for that organisation and, where support exists, an awareness that representing yourself as such, is not inconsequential, will explain the dearth.  Just as it’s not inconsequential when you represent your club.  I can’t see many inviting the consequences.

I also got a call yesterday and a faxed copy of a contemporary Celtic View (yes, a fax) from a fan who was beside Jock Stein when he went into the crowd at Annfield that day in 1972.  It was all very cordial, of course, no one argued with Jock.

Jock was at the height of his powers.  Five years from the European Cup win, two from his last final and four months since losing a European Cup semi-final on penalties, he had yet to lose a league as Celtic manager.  His comment in the View, “The Wreckers are chanting about things that have nothing to do with football” was respected, Celtic fans went back to football matters.  But this was 1972.  News from Ireland was despairing.  Rangers fans (and according to newspaper reports, Hearts fans) were chanting “UDA” without censure, Celtic fans eventually retorted.

This is all sooo last century, apart from the consequences, of course.

Sharp focus for Sunday…

I have a fairly clear opinion of Pat Nevin and it’s not a good one.

Having said that I think it in the spirit of our club and CQN that he be given a chance to explain himself and open himself to questioning. To be fair it’s to his credit that he doesn’t appear frightened to expose himself to that.

I’ll reserve final judgement until I read the piece.

To save you searching back, I think I asked what price would Pat put on an used, abused and whored soul?

If you didn’t ask it already I be appreciative if you could give him a quick bell and get his thoughts. Only joking.

Nobody speaks for anyone other than themselves on CQN nor should they claim to Unless they invent mates and use their names for multiple log ins). I certainly didn’t.

I am disappointed that the Green Brigade did not nominate someone or group to be interviewed by CQN. I support 95% of their activity so I am disappointed to see a reticence to argue their case with fellow supporters.

This blog is a gloomy place sometimes. No wonder our host gets the hump sometimes and lets the post count run on.

This past couple of weeks have been difficult for Celtic. Losing in Amsterdam , when we played so poorly was a sore one. Especially after we had been allowing ourselves to believe in our own publicity to the extent we had. We were lulled into a false sense of security.

The aftermath was worse, with all the pictures and video of trouble in the city involving our supporters. I’m not rushing to judgement in any of this and there might well be some mitigation in pointing out the aggressive way the Dutch policed the game. However, all the media coverage does is harm Celtic’s reputation in the wider football community.

Our own local heroes in the media did what they love to do, naturally, which is put the boot in.The opportunity to redress two to three years of unrelenting bad news for the other lot was seized upon with glee and full advantage taken by all sympathetic to the baddies. That was predictable, if depressing, but the wider impact of images of ‘hooligans’ in Celtic colours throughout the rest of the UK and Europe is more of a worry. And, before anyone starts, spare me the finessing or spinning of who edited what bit of video or said what to whom. A picture paints a thousand words and none of them after Amsterdam will be complimentary to Celtic. When you go away to any other stadium as a supporter you have a responsibility to think about how your actions will reflect upon the support as a whole. Most of us are conscious of that responsibility and act accordingly. Some of the guys there that night, and I’m not just talking about the ones who got lifted, weren’t conscious of much it would seem.

It’s taken us years as a support to earn the respect, trust and affection of much of the global football community. We get a FIFA special award following Seville. The horribles are branded a worse menace than the Luftwaffe after Manchester.

After Amsterdam, though, our reputation and good name appear fragile.

Did we take a telling? Nope. More malarkey at the AGM where the people who are responsible for turning us into a modern day success story and the best run club in Scotland, ever, are branded as : 1. Complicit in a conspiracy to rehabilitate the dead mob and 2. Sweat shop employers. They must be pleased all their hard work is appreciated so much. Cue media feeding frenzy number 2, which could have been a lot worse if it wasn’t for TSSM’s cunning ruse about the place of impressionism in post modern entertainment.

Did we take a telling even then? Nope.

Some smart guys , who apparently have been appointed as the conscience of the Club( I can’t remember voting for them but I must have at one point seeing they are so important) decide , at a Champions League game, seen by millions across the universe, to have a wee dig at an obscure piece of legislation in Hootsmon Land which even folk here know little about and, frankly, care less. I’m not saying The Act is not worth complaining about , but there are times and places and Tuesday was neither. Instead, we get added momentum to the blue tinged media juggernaut about how we are hooligans, political agitators and terrorist lovers . Result!

All of this is an indication to me of how an element of the Celtic Support can’t be content with success on and off the football park. It’s not enough for some of us and , in the luxury of knowing, they think, that the club are unassailable in football terms, they need to posture and preen themselves in ways other than sporting.

It is self indulgent, narcissistic and distinctly unappealing. The GB don’t have a God given right to act like they own the place or tell me how to think and feel. They now, even though it’s late, ought to be taking a telling.

And, having gotten that off my chest, back to the soccer.

Come on the Celts! Into these minis!
