Attitude for Tynecastle

2311

I watched Hearts batter Pat Fenlon’s Hibs into submission at Easter Road last month.  They are not a good team but they have elbows and commitment, often the key resources in a football game.  With our interest in the League Cup and Europe curtailed, and the league title a sure thing, it is enormously important that we remain in the Scottish Cup into the New Year.

Attitude is the most important attribute for Celtic this weekend.

Things you don’t expect to do when you start blogging: I took four calls from journos yesterday asking if I knew a Celtic fan prepared to go on record as an IRA supporter!  I don’t, for the record, not one, so no one else should bother checking.  Lack of support for that organisation and, where support exists, an awareness that representing yourself as such, is not inconsequential, will explain the dearth.  Just as it’s not inconsequential when you represent your club.  I can’t see many inviting the consequences.

I also got a call yesterday and a faxed copy of a contemporary Celtic View (yes, a fax) from a fan who was beside Jock Stein when he went into the crowd at Annfield that day in 1972.  It was all very cordial, of course, no one argued with Jock.

Jock was at the height of his powers.  Five years from the European Cup win, two from his last final and four months since losing a European Cup semi-final on penalties, he had yet to lose a league as Celtic manager.  His comment in the View, “The Wreckers are chanting about things that have nothing to do with football” was respected, Celtic fans went back to football matters.  But this was 1972.  News from Ireland was despairing.  Rangers fans (and according to newspaper reports, Hearts fans) were chanting “UDA” without censure, Celtic fans eventually retorted.

This is all sooo last century, apart from the consequences, of course.

Sharp focus for Sunday…

    BMCUW,

Think you might need to read it again, I derided no one or religion, I simply offered a theory of why there is such polarisation among our support when it comes to The clubs Irish heritage and what part of that heritage we are allowed to celebrate.

I did not give an opinion of whether it was wrong or right, I simply identified that I know of very few who came through that education who have a balanced view of the war in the north.

People take what they want from it as shown, a few took offence because thats what they were looking for.

Why don’t we dig up King Billy and interview him?

I’d much rather the CQN team interviewed ‘the little gentleman in the black velvet waistcoat’

I don’t look for offence when I read your posts, you know that. And I said that I found none in that one.

You are right to say that you know of few who came through that education with a balanced view of the war in the north,as no-one else can argue such a subjective point. But your original point was a broad brushstroke, with which I do disagree.

  7. I don’t think we should get too hung up about the genius of Pat Nevin.

The myth that he was an intelligent footballer is based solely on the fact he once read a book, wore a trenchcoat and likes Joy Divison.

He’s a typical right on look at me I’m attention seeker. Perfect for the BBC and the disgraceful Cup Final agenda.

  8. Pat, you’re a plook only fit for the company of plooks. Get the paper Pat, I feel a movement coming on.

As no photos exist of me in a trenchcoat, how do I go about joining MENSA?

  10. Pat …….. Did the Chelsea fans ever indulge in racism when you played for them ?

    What was your reaction ?

And did you speak to the media over it ?

  11. Ernie you IMAGINE Nevin would,nt say any thing that would damage his media career. Wait and read the interview and if you still feel the same then we,ll know rather than imagine.i,ll approach it with an open mind, hope you do too.then we can make our minds up. Hail Hail Hebcelt

Anyone got a link to Calvin Miller’s goal in the Victory Shield?

I don’t have a link but I saw the goal.

The English keeper made a howler of it. He plucked the ball out of the air but as he fell to the ground the ball slipped out of his hands. Calvin was right next to him and he managed to dig the ball out of the keeper’s grasping hands and stick the ball in the net. Not pretty but it counts!

    winning captains,

I haven’t been reading too much CQN over the last few days but I gather someone has tried to stop you publishing the interview with P Nevin. Why? I have been waiting to hear his views, since the infamous comments about our support.

    Bizarre isn’t it……

  24. So Pat goes out to the world on the BBC and tells the world Celtic Supporters are sectarian bigots and then comes on to CQN and tells CQN he didnae really mean it, and the rest of the world WILL BE INFORMED?

Aye, let Pat use the BBC to answer CQN questions and then I’ll think the slug less.

And if he comes to CQN and tells you – you really are the best supporters in the world, then I really do hope you are a wee bit more savvy.

Oh look at all those guys who say we are the best supporters in the world.

    BMCUW,

My whole point was on the balanced veiw of the war in the north and why the polarization, my sweeping generalisation if their was one, was that those who came through the so called secular education system were brought up to trust the state and the information offered by the state to vilify those they declare as enemies. Even now after all the information the British state have released and the autrocities they have admitted to there are still many among us who refuse to accept any British responsibility and only the IRA were the terrorists. From my experience most of those I know not educated through the secular education system have a healthy mistrust of the establishment a mistrust that has proven to be correct.

I know you were not offended I did not include you as one of the offended you did IMO read into it something that was not intended.

Again I think my point is as valid as any sweeping generalisation can be, for me it helps me understand why Celtic supporters can and will be offended when the discussions arise and helps me to moderate my approach (when I remember :o)

  27. Celtic Football Club Condolences

By: Newsroom Staff on 30 Nov, 2013 23:45

CELTIC Football Club would like to send our condolences to the families of all of those who tragically died in the terrible accident at The Clutha Bar in Glasgow on Friday night.

Eight people lost their lives when a helicopter crashed into the pub, while many more people were injured. They´re being treated in Glasgow hospitals.

One of those who sadly passed away was Gary Arthur, the father of Chloe Arthur who plays for Celtic Women´s first-team.

The thoughts and prayers of everyone at Celtic, including all of Chloe´s team-mates and friends at the club, are with Chloe and her family at this desperately sad time.

Those thoughts and prayers are, of course, also with the families of all of the victims of this terrible tragedy.

Celtic Women’s Manager, David Haley, said: “This is devastating for Chloe and her family. It is a tragedy that Chloe’s father was one of eight innocent victims in this terrible accident – he was regularly seen at Celtic matches, watching his daughter.

“Chloe and her family have the full support of everyone at Celtic and across the women’s game at this very sad time.”

A minute´s silence will be held tomorrow (Sunday) before Celtic´s Scottish Cup tie against Hearts at Tynecastle.

  28. Is anything Pat Nevin says about Celtic and Celtic Supporters worth any credence more than what a Celtic Supporter has to say about Celtic and Celtic Supporters?

And if so… then why so? Tell me why somebody whose words contempted the Celtic Support are worth listening to unless that person who contempted the Celtic Supporters uses the same globalplatform to un-contempt the Celtic Support.

    Please tell me why?

    I can be swayed.

    Please.
