Attitude for Tynecastle

2311

I watched Hearts batter Pat Fenlon’s Hibs into submission at Easter Road last month.  They are not a good team but they have elbows and commitment, often the key resources in a football game.  With our interest in the League Cup and Europe curtailed, and the league title a sure thing, it is enormously important that we remain in the Scottish Cup into the New Year.

Attitude is the most important attribute for Celtic this weekend.

Things you don’t expect to do when you start blogging: I took four calls from journos yesterday asking if I knew a Celtic fan prepared to go on record as an IRA supporter!  I don’t, for the record, not one, so no one else should bother checking.  Lack of support for that organisation and, where support exists, an awareness that representing yourself as such, is not inconsequential, will explain the dearth.  Just as it’s not inconsequential when you represent your club.  I can’t see many inviting the consequences.

I also got a call yesterday and a faxed copy of a contemporary Celtic View (yes, a fax) from a fan who was beside Jock Stein when he went into the crowd at Annfield that day in 1972.  It was all very cordial, of course, no one argued with Jock.

Jock was at the height of his powers.  Five years from the European Cup win, two from his last final and four months since losing a European Cup semi-final on penalties, he had yet to lose a league as Celtic manager.  His comment in the View, “The Wreckers are chanting about things that have nothing to do with football” was respected, Celtic fans went back to football matters.  But this was 1972.  News from Ireland was despairing.  Rangers fans (and according to newspaper reports, Hearts fans) were chanting “UDA” without censure, Celtic fans eventually retorted.

This is all sooo last century, apart from the consequences, of course.

Sharp focus for Sunday…

    Delaneys,

Glad to see that you acknowledged Whitecrook as the rightful rebel county of Clydebank, think the Bhoys in Duntocher might want to have a claim to being affiliates as well!

    It’s a 1am kick-off here in Queensland.

Looking for a 3-0 victory and Commons first goal.

    Tom McLaughlin,

After what has been a pretty awful week back home in many ways, it will be good to finally get back to the football and hopefully a convincing win. I was at Tynecastle about this time last year and the Bhoys served up a 4-0 masterclass, a repeat of the same would do nicely.

    Good Morning Timland.

A real test of character for Celtic today, defeat and there

will be a lot of flak flying in the direction of both PL and

NFL…..I think we’ll have too much for the diet’s, if so

please no hun draw, as I’ve said before a pay day for

Worked with Jim Murphy many moons ago…. Always, and increasingly, disagreed with him. Watching his personal account of tragic events on Friday night was compelling in its honest humanity. Respect too to Frank McKeown and others personally involved…. And, particularly, condolences to the Arthur family. Tragic…

If any positive can be drawn, it is the very particular spirit of community evident in that no mean city…

Anyways, the top league in England spends £96M on agents fees.

So that’s what we are up against, and with the b/t money to come we will be left further behind.

    WARNING football post

Just watched a few clips of Dundee utds Ryan Gaułd which confirms what I thought. I’d pay utd whatever they wanted for that boy. Looks to have it all.

Good first touch , great feet , plays with his head up,can pick a pass and score from open play and set pieces.

Might already be too late tho. Suggestions that Arsenal are watching him.

  17. Dontb @ 07;06,

Well, no don’t that is a huge amount of money for an bunch of guys that contribute nothing to Football.

However whether that means the BT deal Will be bad for British Football I’m not so sure.

Certainly on the face of it more money Will be going into the coffers of Englands top teams.

Yet the SKY TV monopoly did little for Scottish Football – it has yet to be seen, but I believe we Will be getting our fair share of TV revenue in the coming years.

    Hail Hail

  18. Another wonder kid, Gauld, good luck to him I hope he makes it, hope he doesent score against Barcalona, then your off to Belgium to be a super star, MSM should just let the kid be, Ffs he jist stopped sheeting yellow, 20/21 seems to be the age we loss them, money, chicks, Booz, peer pressure, hard to say, let’s just say there is more against these kids today, than there is going for them, honestly good luck to him.

  19. Justafan @ 08:27,

“Justafan just wondering….. Whose going to score our goals????”

There are goals in that team.

As someone posted a few weeks ago we seem to be depend on a bit of individuality to score our goals…

Sammi, Stokes, Forrest, Commons, Ledley, Mulgrew a.n.other…

    Can always nick a goal.

Of course they are also just as likely to miss one, there in lies our problem.

Our defence and Midfield are not going to be bullied and harassed by this Hearts side, it’s up to the flair players to perform, if the performance comes so will the goals.

I’m just looking forward to it…

    Hail Hail

  20. Should be a good cup game today, old fashion sleeves up get wired in stuff, great park tyncastle, always loved the atmosphere there, tight park, dodgy ref. bitter Huns wi no bus fair for fans, unbiased BBC commentary, Lenny having square goes wi all on comers, wits not ti like ;)

  22. Good morning friends from a damp-on-the-ground but dry-from-the-sky East Kilbride.

  23. Morning all.

Looking forward to the game – attitude will be VERY important.

Will there be a striker in the starting line-up? Do we have any?!

    3-0 the Hoops.

Deepest condolences to the families affected by the tragic crash at the Clutha.

Miss Tally was on a night out in Glasgow yesterday for a pal’s birthday which had been arranged some weeks ago. Sombre atmosphere throughout the city.

  24. Macjay:

Yesterday, when I said I wasn’t posting opinion, I was quoting from books, although paraphrasing… please don’t think I was doing that from memory, I had the books in front of me. That’s been bugging me all day.

  25. Top of the morning to you all from a still, sunny Fife where the sky is clear with only those wispy strands of white clouds overhead.

A fine day for the cup tie in Auld Reekie, something that strikes a chord with me as I took my, then pregnant wife, Nan to see a replay there in 1972 and later wrote about it for Celtic Underground:

    http://celticunderground.net/take-heart-progress-has-been-made/

The intro seems to be missing from the article but you will see that in those days the authorities/press had more than just a few banners or bangers to worry about.

By a twist of fate, the unborn child who accompanied us, my son Kevin is back with us at the moment recuperating after surgery. He is doing well and we will watch the game together and hope for a win to put a good end on a bad week for Celtic.

Thoughts are with the families of the poor souls who lost their lives in the Cloutha.
