Avoiding bad Fortune

789

I read our treble-winning captain, Tom Boyd, in the Herald advising Celtic to retain players who want away or decline to sign new contracts, until after their Champions League qualification ties, an idea we discussed some time ago.  Tellingly he added, “They will see when they go down south it’s not always as bright down there as they think it will be”, perhaps a reference to his time in the Chelsea defence.

There is unlikely to be much difference in value achieved between selling before or after the qualifiers, so as long as the players stay on-side with Neil Lennon and the club, there will be no reason to sell before then.

Recruiting is a different matter.  Celtic will want players in as soon as possible but with all in-demand talent, selling clubs have little reason to cash-in before the business end of August.  For me, there are some on the list we are currently linked with (I’m trying to avoid stepping onto the speculation train as long as possible) who I’ll be happy to see sign elsewhere.  Half the battle in transfer windows is to avoid the bad Fortune of splurging money on players who don’t work out.

  3. WeeFratheTim, agreed re Stokesy, he is negotiating the best deal he can.

If you tell the party you are dealing with they have what you want the position to negotiate is weakened severely. If you play easy to get, you get less than you want, a recipe for a disgruntled player. A tricky negotiation, both parties want the same thing, they will just need to get together and talk it through, they will make it happen.

I really believe, and hope, Tony stays. We talk about Hoops being a natural goalscorer I honestly think Tony can do the job also. He also has the knack of finding a scoring position, but Hoops has excelled at it for the past two seasons. If Hoops decides to go, which I think is still debatable, I would give Tony the nod in the preseason. Still time for a replacement. IMHO

  14. I suspect Anthony has been told a good step up in application and performance and he will be weighed in properly next year: money is tight – right footballing decision from NL based on what I have observed at games this season.

Pleased for Stokesy in the cup final, fresh after a long lay off – needs to start next season the same way
