Avoiding bad Fortune

789

I read our treble-winning captain, Tom Boyd, in the Herald advising Celtic to retain players who want away or decline to sign new contracts, until after their Champions League qualification ties, an idea we discussed some time ago.  Tellingly he added, “They will see when they go down south it’s not always as bright down there as they think it will be”, perhaps a reference to his time in the Chelsea defence.

There is unlikely to be much difference in value achieved between selling before or after the qualifiers, so as long as the players stay on-side with Neil Lennon and the club, there will be no reason to sell before then.

Recruiting is a different matter.  Celtic will want players in as soon as possible but with all in-demand talent, selling clubs have little reason to cash-in before the business end of August.  For me, there are some on the list we are currently linked with (I’m trying to avoid stepping onto the speculation train as long as possible) who I’ll be happy to see sign elsewhere.  Half the battle in transfer windows is to avoid the bad Fortune of splurging money on players who don’t work out.

Does anyone know if you get hit by rain at the front of the Jock Stein stand, particularly when it’s raining

  2. DBBIA perhaps they’ve gone to cash converters with a promisory note for Jon Daly’s transfer

Good morning fellow Celts – overcast, but feels warm in Renfrewshire.

Tooting Tim – good post – hope u are keeping busy mate?

Trying to ignore all the transfer speculation – accept it’s all part of the game etc., and a feature of the blog over the years, however, it gets on my moobs :-)

Every year we need a big ball winning Centre Half; lock-picking mid; pacey winger & striker that can heid ball into pokey with reasonable regularity.

There are guys being well paid at the club to make it happen.

The good news is, we are pretty well covered in other positions and going into season as Double winners and last 16 CL team.

    Lots to be positive about.

KevJungle, Its a Naw from me anyway he is not as good as the lads we have.

I refuse to be duped by – Joe Ledley for example – and for me – Kayal hisny kicked a ball since Neil dissed his assault by elbows as an – “…50-50 tackle / 2 players going for the ball.”

IMO- Kayal has chucked it since Neil came oot wi that.

    Dylan – disny get a chance ? why ?

Rogic will need time to get into the team.

Having said all of that – I think that Thompson would be worth a shout.

Also – It would be quite an eye opener to see KT playing in his Hibs mode ie: not instructed to cheat like he was at ipox. imo

I sit in row J of Jock Stein stand mate I cannot remember getting particularly wet when it rained. I like where I sit and doubt I would move.

I think that there’s a bit of hoodwinking involved here.

Folk talk about the brilliant job that the scouting team / John Park etc

have done for the club – bringing in players and boosting their value

to such a level that it will make £x-amount for the club.

The last 2 players of note to be sold were – Aiden & Ki.

Now – as far as I’m aware – the above players were brought in before Neil

was in charge. So – how many / if any of these players that are trumpeted

have made £millions for Celtic ?

The 2 stand outs just now appear to be – Gary Hoooper & Big Vic67

But the thing is – none of the players brought in over the last 3 years have made tha club any money of note. And, it disney seem like we’re chasing potential suitors away from the front door. imo

I think if we had got them both when they left Hibs it would have been a good move.

I think Thompson has lost a lot of drive. The orcs knocked the skill out of him.

The last couple of games against us I thought he looked out his depth, considering what talent he had first time at Hibs.

As for Broonie I am a big fan. I think we only realise what he does for the team when he is missing. Broonie would be my number 1 name on team sheet every week.

    Just my opinion mate.

  10. KevJungle,

Your original point,if I understood it correctly, was putting forward a case in favour of Celtic signing Kevin Thomson.

My response was with regard to that player alone.

    For info re. Kevin Thomson

He has played less than 200 games in his career at age 28 (scoring a whopping 5 goals in the process)

He suffered 2 serious injuries while a rangers player and another while at Boro as well as numerous other injuries.

He made zero impact while at Boro.

    Similar since returning to Hibs.

Never blessed with any pace,KT now appears to be even slower than ever (eg the Scottish Cup Final)

I’ll ask again, with your response hopefully being with regard to KT,what do you think he has (or can regain) that would make him a potential asset for Celtic?

What have you seen of him over the last 3 seasons which would support your view?

  11. Kev J

That’s not what I asked though.

Do youn think that Kevin Thompson is a better player than Scott Brown?

  13. Dontbrattbakkinanger on

We ‘ve got plenty of ole combative, energetic scufflers in the midfield.

We need someone with an eye for a pass, someone who lets the ball do the work.

  14. Henriks Sombrero on

Why all the dancing around on the Kevin Thompson debate ? He’s cack. It’s a non debate. You’d be as well asking why don’t we sign Kris Boyd – he’s cack as well. And if anyone thinks Scott Brown has only played 10 good games in the last 5 years then that person has not seen a lot of Celtic games.

  15. KevJungle,

We’ll have to agree to differ on KT.

You are,of course, entitled to your opinion.

To steal one of your lines,I am now “aff oot”

There are parts of KT’s play – drive / discipline / technique / toughness…that I like to see in a player.

I still say that – we’d get the best from Broony if KT was paired with him. imo

Read your post from last night. Nerve damage is common after an osteotomy. When the surgeon is correcting the angle of the leg, imagine him pulling all muscles and nerves across at a thirty degree angle after the portion of bone is removed, very physical thing to do. Creates tearing in the nerves.

It can take a year to eighteen months to get repair and all feeling back into the damaged area. The feeling might never come back but you will recover fully and walk normally so don’t let it get you down.

I have sufficient nerve damage as I had two osteotomies that I cannot “walk on my heels” anymore. Those of you who have no idea what I am talking about try it, my right foot “drops” to the floor because of nerve damage.

Patience is a virtue and I know how frustrating it is but you will come through the other side. That I can promise you.

    Not on this occasion!

No way would adding KT improve our team in my opinion.

I’d like to see us make a move for Bakary Sako. Great player. Left sided midfield player who we’d get for about £3m. Wants away. £25k a week at present, which may be the stumbling block as he’s sure to get offers of more than that from an EPL side. Worth a cheeky wee bid though.
