Avoiding bad Fortune

789

I read our treble-winning captain, Tom Boyd, in the Herald advising Celtic to retain players who want away or decline to sign new contracts, until after their Champions League qualification ties, an idea we discussed some time ago.  Tellingly he added, “They will see when they go down south it’s not always as bright down there as they think it will be”, perhaps a reference to his time in the Chelsea defence.

There is unlikely to be much difference in value achieved between selling before or after the qualifiers, so as long as the players stay on-side with Neil Lennon and the club, there will be no reason to sell before then.

Recruiting is a different matter.  Celtic will want players in as soon as possible but with all in-demand talent, selling clubs have little reason to cash-in before the business end of August.  For me, there are some on the list we are currently linked with (I’m trying to avoid stepping onto the speculation train as long as possible) who I’ll be happy to see sign elsewhere.  Half the battle in transfer windows is to avoid the bad Fortune of splurging money on players who don’t work out.

Agree, we should sign every player who is up for sale ….. Why stop at Russell ?……LOL

  2. If posters are requesting the club signs a player could they mention who would be dropped to accommodate them, unless they are another squad player…

I asked who you thought added more to a team, Kevin Thompson or Scott Brown?

  6. The revelation that Walter Smith received an EBT if £80,000 may or may not be true. The fact that a very large law firm successfully forced Scrib’d to delete a previous revelation based on the laws of copyright in itself is interesting.

That suggests to me that the information revealed which claimed to be from the Law Firm, must indeed have been so. I can’t see how copyright ( which is effectively in this case ownership of advice) could have been relevant for a fake.

This doesn’t mean that the claim about Walter Smith is true, but it does come from a source which has a track record of revealing information which appears to be genuine.

Why does any of this matter ? There have been lots of EBT beneficiaries, and apart from 5 , all appear to have been legally provided and not subject to tax. This of course may change as early as next month, depending on the outcome of the appeal.

Why Walter Smith’s EBT, if indeed he had one, needs to be questioned is related to his new position as Chairman of a Plc . A Chairman has a much more onerous responsibility than , lets say a TV commentator . A Chairman of a Plc has a responsibility for example to Lead the Board in establishing and periodically reviewing the Group’s values and behavioural standards

You can only do that credibly if there are no question marks against you as an individual . I am not suggesting there are any questions against Walters credibility or integrity. However if I was Chairman of a Plc , and a similar revelation appeared , I would take the earliest opportunity to refute any questions around such a revelation

Specifically I would explain whether I received an EBT or not. I would explain why I received one, if that was the case, and I would explain, if I received such a benefit why this happened 4 years after I left the employment of that business, and shortly after I left my subsequent job.

For the avoidance of any doubt, Walter Smith signed a great many players at Everton and sold an equally large number. I can only see one transaction with Rangers, and that was to sell Michael Ball to them, which hardly falls into the category of doing a friend a favour.

It seems to me that Walter passes any cursory scrutiny over behaving in the best interests of his employer. That doesn’t mean he can ignore this latest revelation. Deny it and out the source as not credible, or explain it if true and put the matter to rest.

    That’s what I would do.

Can anyone enlighten me with a question re: the Derry City / Sevco similarities?

I notice on the ASA reply that they said along the lines of “it[the ECA] considered RFC was still the same football club, having the same registration number with the Football Association”.

This reads to me that not only did the SFA ignore rules (via a 5 way agreement) to transfer the football license, but that they also allowed the registration to be transferred (unless the ECA were mislead in this regard either by Sevco or the SFA). Does anyone know for sure either way if the SFA registration was transferred to Sevco?

Do Derry City as exists now have the same registration number with their FA as the previous incarnation did? If not, could this be why they themselves refer to an old club and a new club, as the club being a non-physical entity is purely existent as a registration number with a governing body, as a company is with companies house?

To me, if my quad was written off, and I built a new quad from the bits I could salvage plus a whole lot of new parts I would still consider this a new quad even if the DVLA would let me continue to use the same registration document… but just curious to know.

On the subject of quads. If anyone knows of anyone looking for a road legal quad I’ve a 2006 Yamaha YFM350r Raptor road legal quad for sale. Email is my blog name at gmail.com. Will happily buy beers by way of a finders fee if you know of anyone :)

Barcabhoy -Sevco is not a normal PLC.

They have their own , probably unique, behavioural values and standards and the Legned ticks all the boxes for them.

Thomson was a decent player when he was with the huns but as has been repeatedly said has done nothing in the last three or four years. Due to serious injury problems, ffs.

Scott Brown was very disappointing for the first three or four years with us,no denying it,but he has been immense for us since.

You mentioned Kayal not having kicked a ball for Celtic since Neil said that the incident between him and McCulloch when he got badly injured was a 50-50.

I seem to remember that when Kayal’s stock was high with Celtic and he was looking for a new contract there was a lot of complaints on here from posters that he wasn’t trying a leg. Was it not in the game against Kilmarnock when we were 3-0 down that he appeared to be actively trying to get himself sent off in the first half? Did he actually appear for the second half?

I may be mistaken over the game when it was obvious that he wasn’t trying but I’ve never felt the same about Kayal since. Maybe Neil feels the same.

Bobby nobody would love ‘them’ to be exterminated more than me.

But – yer missing my point.

All of those – cup final wins – League title wins – and all the parties that went with them

    are gone.

All we’ll probably get is a sheet of paper with some asterix next to the detail.

What comfort that will bring i don’t know ?

I was at the – Q7A session in the kosc in blantyre a few weeks ago and – a bloke sitting across from the CQN section – asked the panel why Celtic did nothing after the LNS verdict ?

The bloke went on and illustrated that – had Celtic presented the so called ‘dossier’ then the club might not have lost £60 mill of CL money that was obviously stolen from them and, if the bored had been in the same movie as the bampots – fighting the same fight then – Celtic FC could have been enjoying – 11 in a row this season – not 2 !!!

The guy was magnificent. I went ootside to congratulate the guy only to be met with 2 prominent CQNer’s who seemed to be of the opinion that – those views expressed by the gent in question – shouldn’t have been aired at that time ?

All 4 of us had a – pleasant – discussion and went back in to the hall again.

But – ye know what…I can’t shake this feeling that – far too many Celtic fans – from all walks…are more concerned wi the huns than keeping a healthy eye on their own club. imo

That is concerning and dangerous. Look what happened to the huns when their fans became sheep …..

There is an unfortuneate proximity of the ebts to both Smith and Souness to transfers of Tugay and Ball to Blackburn and Everton respectively that brought in £9.3m in transfer fees to Rangers according to published figures and you would think both individuals would want to dispell any suspicion of improper behaviour given the public exposure both have.
