Avoiding bad Fortune

789

I read our treble-winning captain, Tom Boyd, in the Herald advising Celtic to retain players who want away or decline to sign new contracts, until after their Champions League qualification ties, an idea we discussed some time ago.  Tellingly he added, “They will see when they go down south it’s not always as bright down there as they think it will be”, perhaps a reference to his time in the Chelsea defence.

There is unlikely to be much difference in value achieved between selling before or after the qualifiers, so as long as the players stay on-side with Neil Lennon and the club, there will be no reason to sell before then.

Recruiting is a different matter.  Celtic will want players in as soon as possible but with all in-demand talent, selling clubs have little reason to cash-in before the business end of August.  For me, there are some on the list we are currently linked with (I’m trying to avoid stepping onto the speculation train as long as possible) who I’ll be happy to see sign elsewhere.  Half the battle in transfer windows is to avoid the bad Fortune of splurging money on players who don’t work out.

I normally agree with your views on here.

I’d like to see us make a move for Bakary Sako. Great player. Left sided midfield player who we’d get for about £3m. Wants away. £25k a week at present, which may be the stumbling block as he’s sure to get offers of more than that from an EPL side. Worth a cheeky wee bid though.

I’ve not seen this player but – the wage shouldn’t be a problem. imo

I mean – JL and SB are both on an accumulated annual salary of – £3mill.

It would make a refreshing change from bringing in – dirt cheap players who

can’t / don’t cut it and are no more than a drain on resourses. imo

16- If we don’t sell players it means no-one wants them because they are rubbish…

Kev, if you take into consideration all the pros and cons of both Thompson and Brown, who do you think would add more to a team?

Please take them on individual merits and not as part of a collective unit in the same team.

That, for me,is the most laughable part of the story-them cheating the taxman to throw money at utter(sp!) diddies, killing their club in the process!

And if the taxman decides to go after individual recipients, there are a few that I hope are right at the top of the list….

  8. corkcelt,

apologies for taking so long to get back to you. Babysitting in Dublin’s no’ easy!

I think the answer lies in the reasons for sending boys out on loan.

Most times it’s because you think that they won’t make the grade at CP, therefore it’s a kind of shop window.

However, if the manager thinks that a boy will make the grade, with the help of regular first team football at SPL level, then I think it is a viable concept.

It would be up to Neil, with an input from Mc.Guinness, to assess which boys would benefit from the experience and let the player know the reasons.

Regards Kevin Thompson,I would’ve signed him ahead of Broonie at the time, but Broonie IMO has become our most influential player,Thompson is only a shadow of the player he was,I think injuries have taken its toll.

  10. At the time of the Scott Brown and Keven Thompson moves from hibs I thought the huns got the better player, as I said at the time, now NO I was wrong and I do remember at that time the most of my Tim pals though so as well….funny old game init ;)

  11. Back in again…

Transfer windows are a strange affair most of the comings and goings of players tend to happen in the last few days. You would think football clubs would want transfers settled early doors but it looks like most football clubs have no real forward planning but just a gut reaction. We have to trust our manager to have players he wants on his list and that he believes will improve the team im afraid for us the fans it is a matter of trying to be patient.H.H.

If the tax-men eventually get their erses into gear and go after the huns…what good will it do Celtic or Celtic fans ?

Im glad he isnt looking to punt them come the first sniff of a profit becuase we all know, espcially yourself if he got 15M for vic tomorrow he wouldnt get 15m to splash.

Thats prob the reason he would rather keep them.

    £20-£30mill CL money

£5 mill wiped off the wage-bill

    £6 mill for Ki

    £20 mill for SB’s ?

Anyway…point I’m trying to make is why from that pot can’t we even sign – Johnny Russell ?

I said earlier…we should make it clear that we won’t spend any money this window and instead – see if the management team can get the best oot of the materials at their disposal ?

I mean – Bangura was recommended by the KOK’s

Lassad scored a cute goal in his debut at Swinecastle !!!

Miku scored a classy goal at Tannadice !!!

So – I think that there is something in these players and it should now be doon to the management team to get the best oot of them. imo

It’s far better to let the money work for the club in the bank than – continuing down this road of bringing in – nobodies from nowhere – and bulking the dressing room with a host of players who amount to no more than a drain on resources. imo

What I’m trying to say is – we’re getting it right by getting into the CL – although, I would rather have been in Benfica’s position – EL final – we don’t get to too many of those ye know :)

Again – why do we wait until we have a couple of players worth selling – with an intent to sell them – and then it’s back to square one ?

For instance – why can’t we bring in Russell to partner Hooper instead of replacing him ?

    2 steps forward – 3 steps back – CSC
