Avoiding bad Fortune

789

I read our treble-winning captain, Tom Boyd, in the Herald advising Celtic to retain players who want away or decline to sign new contracts, until after their Champions League qualification ties, an idea we discussed some time ago.  Tellingly he added, “They will see when they go down south it’s not always as bright down there as they think it will be”, perhaps a reference to his time in the Chelsea defence.

There is unlikely to be much difference in value achieved between selling before or after the qualifiers, so as long as the players stay on-side with Neil Lennon and the club, there will be no reason to sell before then.

Recruiting is a different matter.  Celtic will want players in as soon as possible but with all in-demand talent, selling clubs have little reason to cash-in before the business end of August.  For me, there are some on the list we are currently linked with (I’m trying to avoid stepping onto the speculation train as long as possible) who I’ll be happy to see sign elsewhere.  Half the battle in transfer windows is to avoid the bad Fortune of splurging money on players who don’t work out.

  1. Morning CQN,

I see the sevconians are cock-a-hoop (oh yes they are:)) that the ASA have decided to reject complaints regarding their claim via advertising of continuity with oldco of being improper.

Apparently the deciding factors were independent (oh yes they were!) inquiries that reported back to the SPL & the ECA that “whateverco was a recognisable entity in its own right and had continued in its existence despite being transferred to another owner and operator”.

So this ethereal, quasi-legal entity really is to be allowed to pick and choose which bits to keep and which bits to shrug off. As The Honest Mistake posted yesterday the ratification of Airdrie Utd changing their name to Airdrieonians seems to be nothing more than a debtors charter. Add in this further rubber-stamping of Brysonman’s sophistry and there only does seem to be one direction of travel at the moment.

Normally, as a dewy-ewed romantic dreamer and keen fan of early football history the re-appearance of the Airdrieonians name, and also TBH, any attempt by groups of fans of any club to keep hold of a semblance of continuity in the face of financial meltdown would automatically draw a sympathetic response from me.

But what we seem to be witnessing here is something other than that….it looks and sounds like a cabal re-writing the rules and blurring the edges in order to avoid some very uncomfortable home truths.

All the very best to GCT – Keep on keepin’ on, sir…likewise to Miki, Wee Oscar and of course Kano and family.

Looks like another fine day here, so….off oot! HH!

That sent me scuttling into the waybackmachine to have a look around at some old blogs – there are a couple from 2004 in there Mick11, and the third or so oldest has comments as well if you are interested.

  4. Morning all an overcast start to the day in ML3.

I think Stokes is a clever player and he can score the type of goals that no one else currently at Celtic can score (Easter Rd last season).

If, and it’s only if, Hooper leaves, then it’s imperative that Stokes stays.

  5. Re the Anto Stokes debate. Lest some forget prior to Anto’s bad injury both he and Hoops scoring records were quite similar. So less of the nonsense about him wanting a contract based on the cup final. IMO he is a better all round footballer than Hoops, albeit not so much of a penalty box predator, and as for his much maligned attitude again it is comparable with Hoops. How many games have we seen Hoops contribute absolutely nothing and stroll around the pitch like a petulant child ? A lot of fans worry about Hoops leaving – me given a choice I’d rather lose Hooper and keep Stokes. Now the really worrying thing is that we will likely go out and spend cash on some unknown entity of a striker and lose both Hooper and Anto. We need no reminder that our recent record on signing decent strikers over p*sh poor ones is well – p*sh poor – 3 million for Bangura for example. Finger oot PL and give Stokes a decent contract.

Can someone pease text or email me as I haven’t been on the blog much and missed what’s happened with Gold Coast Tom.

    Thanks

  12. NEIL LENNON is weighing up a shock swoop for veteran Republic of Ireland stopper Richard Dunne.

And the Celtic boss could also beat Derby to the £800,000 signing of Dundee United striker Johnny Russell.

Dunne, 33, did not play at all for Aston Villa last season after a series of injuries.

Lennon said: “Richard is a player I’ve always known and always liked. He has not played for a long time and I don’t know what kind of condition he is in.

“The way we have been signing players over the years, he would fall out of that category.

“But we have signed players like Daniel Majstorovic and it is good to have one or two experienced players in.”

Celts need central defensive reinforcements with Thomas Rogne and Rami Gershon heading out.

Dunne played for 25 minutes of Ireland’s friendly win over Georgia on Sunday — his first match since Euro 2012.

Irish boss Giovanni Trapattoni is ready to throw him in to Friday’s World Cup qualifier against the Faroes, as well as next week’s friendly with Spain in the USA.

And Lennon, who was in Dublin yesterday to promote the Hoops’ pre-season clash with Liverpool, will monitor Dunne’s form and fitness.

Lennon has also confirmed he remains in the hunt for United hitman Russell.

The Arabs have agreed a fee with Derby for the 23-year-old Scotland ace, who wants time to consider his options.

Lennon added: “We like Russell as a player and always have done. We are monitoring the situation at the minute.”

Celtic also have Vitoria Guimaraes hitman Amido Balde on their radar as they prepare for the new campaign.

But Lennon fears bids for Victor Wanyama, with Arsenal, Inter Milan, Stoke, Newcastle and Southampton all keen.

He said: “Balde is a player we have scouted and looks the type we would like, but whether we can get a deal done or not, I don’t know.

“He is a big striker and has the physical attributes we are looking for, but he is interesting other clubs as well.

“I would expect a bid for Victor Wanyama but I don’t know who from.

“With a player of that talent, I would think that eventually somebody will put a phone call in.”

Lennon does not expect any movement with keeper Fraser Forster.

He said: “Fraser is on a long-term contract and although every player has his price, I don’t want him going anywhere.”

Meanwhile, former St Mirren loan star Conor Newton would love the chance of a switch to Celtic.

Newcastle youngster Newton and pal Paul Dummett were loaned to the Buddies last season.

Midfielder Newton, 21, and left-back Dummett both played major roles as Saints won the League Cup.

They have been offered new deals by Toon gaffer Alan Pardew — but Newton would love a move to the SPL champs.

He said: “A move to Celtic would interest anyone. I would definitely consider it, but I have not heard anything from them yet.

“I have not signed on with Newcastle yet, but there is a new deal on the table. I need to have a proper look at it once I get myself together.

“The past six months is probably the most football I have played in my career, so I just need to rest up for a few weeks.

“I understand there is an offer from St Mirren as well so that is definitely still a possibility.

“I would like to have made my decision within the next two weeks as the start of the season is not far off.

“It’s a big decision on whether I stay with Newcastle or move on. I’ve been at the club since I was a kid so it would be a huge move to leave.”

  15. twists n turns on

    Morning all

fairly bright here in Shropshire this morning.

Any sign of my 2 new defenders yet?

Sevco are 11/8 to win the Ramsdens cup. For those of you who don’t understand gambling, that means if you put £25 on them to win……you lose £25:-)

    Speaking of Sevco….from bygone days of yore;

“Rangers are hoping to sign Argentinian prodigy Leo Messi on loan from Barcelona.

Messi was the star of the recent Fifa World Youth Championship in Holland as he helped Argentina beat Nigeria in the final.

The teenager is tipped for greatness but reports suggest that, before he makes his name at Camp Nou, he will gain experience in Glasgow with Rangers.

Speculation suggests that Rangers boss Alex McLeish is aiming to strike a deal to take Messi to Ibrox on a season-long loan.

The capture of such a mercurial young talent would be a major coup for The Gers but it remains to be seen if McLeish can tempt the attacker to the SPL.

He was recently rewarded for his progress at Barcelona with a new contract which ties him to the club until 2010, while his buy-out clause stands at a mind-boggling ‚é¼150 million.

Messi has also been promoted to the Barca first team from the B team, while the club’s sporting director Txiki Beguiristain has ruled out a move for the 18-year-old.

Beguiristain feels the Argentine ace will have a role to play at Camp Nou next season after making his debut last term.

Coach Frank Rijkaard is currently assessing how much involvement Messi will play in the new campaign and could sanction a switch to Rangers if it will benefit his career”

  16. Morning,

‘The Parkhead boss also confirmed he is interested in Portuguese striker Amido Balde and that he hopes to have some new faces in within the next few weeks.’

Daily record justifying their story, he actually described the story as part of the silly season .

  17. Vmhan, Tom advised yesterday that he had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostrate cancer. He is awaiting further tests to see if the disease has spread. Hopefully it hasn’t but he does have a battle on his hands. I again send my regards to Tom to Miki67 to EDB and to all members of the CQN family who are not well in body or mind this day. A special word to my friend BT, although his ailment is not on a par with the lads above, he did have disappointing news yesterday and when he did report in, his post was treated with hilarity by his “friends” including me because of a typing error. Hope you forgive us BT and hope you return to full mobility asap.

Good post, Stokes is a great asset to the team and if not for recent injuries would have featured more in the 1st team.

  20. Morning all from a slightly overcast but definitely warmer day in the Chilterns…

    Tootingtim @ 06:28,

Good post, good points well made…

Back in the 70s the New Avengers were on, there was an episode where a giant man-eating Animal was causing carnage down the sewer.

They were reports of a sharp toothed Shark…

However there were aso reports of a giant Snake…

Turns out it was a Huge Radioactive Rat, somewitnesses had seen it from the front, some from behind.

Now Rangers have stated they aren’t sharks, they refute the notion that their snakes, they produce evidence to back this up.

I would just like someone for once to look at the whole beast and call it what it is.

    Hail! Hail!

  24. Morning all. Dull but mild down here on the Costa del Clyde (well, it felt like Spain yesterday).

What’s the implications of Walter’s £80,000, mentioned by wee Lottie?

  25. The Battered Bunnet on

Wee Charlotte seems to be suggesting that certain former managers of a former club formerly received cash benefits from a former club while latterly employees of other clubs.

  26. Broken my lurking exile to pass on my very best wishes to GCT …will offer up a first friday mass for you in Tokyo on the 7th June

  27. I don’t know what drives guys to demand that PL sign A or B or C. Leave all that to our manager and John Park. They know who we really need and can realistically get.

  28. KevJungle,

I am not a member of any pitch fork brigade but was wondering what Kevin Thomson has done in the last say 5 years which would lead you to conclude he would be an asset to Celtic?
