Avoiding bad Fortune

789

I read our treble-winning captain, Tom Boyd, in the Herald advising Celtic to retain players who want away or decline to sign new contracts, until after their Champions League qualification ties, an idea we discussed some time ago.  Tellingly he added, “They will see when they go down south it’s not always as bright down there as they think it will be”, perhaps a reference to his time in the Chelsea defence.

There is unlikely to be much difference in value achieved between selling before or after the qualifiers, so as long as the players stay on-side with Neil Lennon and the club, there will be no reason to sell before then.

Recruiting is a different matter.  Celtic will want players in as soon as possible but with all in-demand talent, selling clubs have little reason to cash-in before the business end of August.  For me, there are some on the list we are currently linked with (I’m trying to avoid stepping onto the speculation train as long as possible) who I’ll be happy to see sign elsewhere.  Half the battle in transfer windows is to avoid the bad Fortune of splurging money on players who don’t work out.

The Derry City angle in favour of oldco=newcob argument was used by A Bryce as a guest blogger on Paul McConvilles site.

Ive been all over his views like a rash there pointing out how the points in the BBC article meant the reverse of his argument based on the cooefficient being applied to Derry AFTER the 3 years had elapsed when they were then eligible.for Europe.

Questions were put to UEFA media last week a NUJ journalist and if UEFA deem to reply we will all know how UEFA view The Rangers now, which is exactky how they viewed Derry City at the time the applied for the 3 yr rule to be put aside and were refused (because under Art 12 of UEFA FFP UEFA do not recognise the club separate from company argument given life by Rangers liquidation) to protect the integrity of UEFA competition- unlike our SFA who are supposed to be working to UEFA FFP standards for SPL clubs but chose to put the intergrity of our game at risk by ignoring their own rules on club licensing choosing instead the much more discretionary approach under SFA membership rules.

The SFA even misled the msm by saying UEFA ban is result of unpaid tax and unaudited accounts which stopped a compliant msm asking why 3 years and what principles the Art 12 is intended to uphold.

Well UEFA have been asked now and it will all become clear if they reply or if they do not reply which could only be that the response will embarass the SFA by highlighting their avoidance of key FFP principles.

This is no longer abour oldco/newco nomenclature it is about how football governing bodies SFA/SPL and UEFA have conived to get a result that suits their objectives at the great risk to sporting integrity.

It is a story in itself.

    Auldheid,

Someone should also ask the SFA why “Rangers” had to play in the early rounds of the scottish Cup. If they are the same team (as the SFA seems happy to go along with) they should have been seeded to go in at the same point as the other SPL clubs (based on the finishing position in 2011-12).

In fact, isn’t it strange that nodody at “Rangers” complained about having to play these extra rounds? Maybe that tells us something in itself…..

Probably one of the points in the famous 5-way agreement which nobody is allowed to see. Are UEFA okay about these secret memberships?

  6. The Comfortable Collective,

The Derry article uses the phrases “new club” and “old club”, and seems to recognise that a club can be liquidated.

Wise words from Tom Boyd, as usual.

Celtic do not need to sell and should be in no rush to break up a developing group of players.

The squad does need trimmed and obviously two or three replacements are essential – but our best players should be held until it’s in Celtic’s best interests to sell – we have no need to work to the agenda of others.

  14. !!Bada Bing!! on

Hun sympathiser and Fighting Fund raiser Ballantyne, is kidding nobody with the Airdrie name change scam.Once a hun…

  15. When I was a young Celtic supporter I never heard booing or jeering of players, if events weren’t to our satisfaction then a slow hand clap was the way.

From 1957 until 1965 we were a soft team, we played the game the “Bob Kelly Way”, Sean Fallon once mentioned receiving a bonus after losing for the manner which we lost.

My favourite player as a St Pat’s schoolboy was Frank Brogan a very cultured player who could perform on both wings and also had an eye for goal, however it was said that he actually ran away fae captain blood shearer of the huns. The same shearer that wee ten thirty had an altercation with which resulted in Bertie being left out of the 7-1 side.

The huns had a “they shall not pass” defence that terrorised our fair play forwards, as unfortunately did some other sides.

Wee Bertie like Pat Crerand epitomised that era as being too troublesome for the management, Pat managed tae get sent off playing for Scotland in Dublin and also at a 5-a-side tournament at Falkirk, definitely NOT the “Bob Kelly Way”.

The night we lost tae the Pars in the replay of the Scottish, Jock Stein reared Bertie was on his way tae Birmingham where he contrived tae break the England captain’s jaw in an altercation during a game. That same night our club captain Bertie Peacock turned out for NI in a friendly even though we had lost regular left back Jim Kennedy tae appendicitis the night before, Bob decided that youngster Willie O’Neil deserved his chance while another youngster John Clarke played in Bertie P’s left half position as a result of scoring the winner in a replay at Easter Road when deputising for the injured skipper.

Jock built us a fine reserve side only for senior management, James Edward is exempted here as he was also too nice, tae ruin them when they made the first team.

As the 60’s emerged with groups taking over from the slicked back style male singers we were known as “Bob Kelly and the Easybeats”.

It wasn’t until Jock arrived that a bit of steel was inserted intae the side, nice guys like big Billy seemed tae toughen up a bit albeit with a bit of help fae Luggy, Bobby and Bertie started tae boss the midfield.

In his first cup final as manager against the deid team Ian Young humphed wee ned wullie johnston on tae the dirt track in the opening minutes, the tone was set not just for that game but the next 10 years.

Jock didn’t just save the club but he also saved Sir Bob’s directorship.

Finally as a youngster at St Pats one of our teachers was a diehard home and away supporter, when asked by the class who in his opinion was the worst player at CP he replied Charlie Gallagher, unfortunately the cultured Charlie was also part of the too nice players then. Big Jock changed that, not that Charlie became tougher or dirtier just that he fitted intae a firmer Celtic side.

I still reckon tae this day that had Frank Brogan hung around a bit longer we would have more than 1 gold star on our tops.

I remember being really pleased when Celtic bought Stuart Slater . He looked like a player in his early days at West Ham and then he got injured. He failed to click at Celtic ——- one of those things.

  18. afternoon, following on from discussion on Wanyamas being cuptied or not if he plays in champions league qualifiers , my understanding is if he plays and we qualify he is cup tied, if we fail to qualify he can play for another team if transferred,

Rule 18.07 states that if a player features in the first, second or third qualifying rounds of either the Champions League or Europa League, he can play for another club in either competition from the group stages onwards, provided his former employers do not reach the group stages themselves.

If a player is involved in any of the aforementioned qualifying rounds for a side which then goes on to play in the group stages of either UEFA competition, he is not eligible to play for another club in Europe in that season.

Ha ha Bobby, I think my taste buds must be shot also. I pour hot sauce on everything that’s not near nuclear. It is true that they rave Bjk on their badge. It stands for Besiktas jimnastic. Club. Although they are the oldest football club in Turkey and founded in 1903, they didn’t start to play football till later, as team sports were not legal under the Ottoman’s.

    Thanks for that.

The duplicity, chicanery and downright embezzlement of a Division 3 licence granted by the SFA, was thee date in the Sevco story.

Nothing will ever convince me otherwise, and I think as you pointed out the other day, these are the days we should savour as Celtic fans in a pestilential free top league environment.

We are still in the summer of ‘No Rangers’ and have a minimum of two more years, without them or their reincarnated form.

The UEFA angle will an acid test, but it is so far away to be bothered thinking about, given they’ve yet to muster any money other than false pledges from Celtic fans, in a flop share issue, and one Spiv after another over at the cuckoo’s nest.

Magazine. Secondhand Daylight is one of the best albums ever made – a work of genius. I think they are a bit Marmite for many people – you either love ’em of loath ’em. They are probably the only band from that era who have reformed and pulled it off – more arty than angry.

Pretty fair and accurate assessment of the way we were.
