Avoiding bad Fortune

789

I read our treble-winning captain, Tom Boyd, in the Herald advising Celtic to retain players who want away or decline to sign new contracts, until after their Champions League qualification ties, an idea we discussed some time ago.  Tellingly he added, “They will see when they go down south it’s not always as bright down there as they think it will be”, perhaps a reference to his time in the Chelsea defence.

There is unlikely to be much difference in value achieved between selling before or after the qualifiers, so as long as the players stay on-side with Neil Lennon and the club, there will be no reason to sell before then.

Recruiting is a different matter.  Celtic will want players in as soon as possible but with all in-demand talent, selling clubs have little reason to cash-in before the business end of August.  For me, there are some on the list we are currently linked with (I’m trying to avoid stepping onto the speculation train as long as possible) who I’ll be happy to see sign elsewhere.  Half the battle in transfer windows is to avoid the bad Fortune of splurging money on players who don’t work out.

Signing Johnny Russell would send a message to both Gary Hooper and to any of his suitors, that we have given up on him, heightening expectations of lower transfer fees. If Hoops goes, he goes to the highest bidder, even if that is Hull City FC. Now Gary, I have been to Hell and back, even been to Mull and back, but you know something, I have never been to Hull and back. Know why? It’s on the road to nowhere!

“DU have accepted a third bid for Russell……we’re either faffin about or don’t fancy him.”

I’m not sure that is the situation to be honest.

The media are desperate for stories now that the season has ended – to the point they link Neil Lennon with an apparent crime committed by the ex-girlfriend of a former Rangers captain … on the basis our manager lives near her FFS…

If big Vic being linked with Inter Milan, Southampton, Stoke, Newcastle and Arsenal … maybe even Tottenham is anything to go by, I’d take any stories with a pinch of salt.

I’m pretty certain if Celtic are interested in Russell he will be signed.

Cheers for info on Southhampton it shows the holding company argument for the nonsense it is however.

However I note you think there is a three year penalty for failing to produce audited accounts.

The relevant Articles are 47 Annual financial statements Article 48 Financial statements for the interim period.

In neither is it mentioned there is a 3 year penalty for not supplying. This would be unfair if a club were unable to comply in year 1 but not year 2.

That this misunderstanding exists is down to the SFA either not knowing UEFA rules or answering the question of reason for a ban in a misleading way so that everyone believes it to be true rather than look at real reason.

Im on mobile and cannot upload Articles but Article 12 states

A licence applicant may only be a football club i.e a legal entity fully responsible for a football team participating in in national and international competitions which either:

    a) is a registered member of a UEFA member association and/or its affiliated league ( hereinafter registered member) or

b ) has a contractural relationship with a registered member ( hereinafter football company).

    2. The membership and the contractural relationship (if any) must gave lasted – at the start of the licensing season – for at least three consecutive years.

Thus for the holding company argument were to hold water any relationship with MIH had to be contractural and that means a contract to prove it BUT even if it was MIH are no longer the company with whom the same relationship exists.

The rules go on to say any alteration to clubs legal form or company structure …. to facilitate its receipt of a licence to the detriment of the integrity of the competition is deemed as an interruption of membership or contractural relationship ( if any) within the meaning of this provision.

In short do not use insolvency to get around UEFA rules and jeopardise their competition. As I have said pity the SFA did not take the same principled stance but what can one expect from a bunch of Pharisees?

I believe we have a strategy for signings at Parkhead and niether Dunne or Doyle fit the strategy as they would have no sell on value.Neil Lennon in a TV interview will give very little away why should he ? I am certain both he and the SSM will know exactly who they want to bring in and who will be leaving the Football Club so lets be patient and trust Lennie. H.H.

I rate Russell as well – and it’s noticeable he is improving each season.

But I like the way we conduct our transfer business and don’t use the media to tap up players. Sometimes people, not yourself, take this approach to mean lack of activity.

When Celtic have something to say regarding new signings then we know the deal is done. I don’t think we need to rush because if we want him moves will already have been made.

  18. Weefrathe Tim, Why on earth are you lurking only, you are a poster I really enjoy, make this Tim happy and resume normal service.

  25. ElDiegoBhoy 20.30 makes a very valid point with lads like Watt, Attajic & George waiting in the wings maybe its a more experienced Striker we need to play alongside the young turks. What is the point in spending so much on an Academy if we don’t give the graduates a decent chance to make a break through to the first team.

    No problem.

In relation to the audited accounts. I’ve maybe not explained myself well enough. The reason I think Sevco can’t play in Europe for 3 years is because they are incapable of producing a minimum of 3 years audited accounts for at least 3 years. (I realise the failure to submit audited accounts in any given year would not result in a 3 year expulsion from Europe).

However, your point is still noteworthy as many probably think there is a 3 year expulsion for failure to submit audited accounts in any given year due to the SMSM.

And of course the SFA, who are the instigators of the myth….

  29. corkcelt,

i think that boys like the ones you mentioned, would benefit from a season’s loan to clubs like Dundee Untd.

Clubs who play in the top flight, but without the pressure of trying to break through at Celtic Park.

I also feel that Russell is the right age and has the experience yo step up.

  30. Weefrathe, Obviously I don’t know what in particular has upset you to the extent that you have lost your interest in posting. From time to time I am sure that all of us become annoyed and a bit disillusioned by something or another on the site, I know I certainly have anyway. However remember the vast majority posting here are very decent generous kind hearted people, who like you support the Celtic with a passion. Why wouldn’t you want to chat to people like that, share a joke and a laugh and talk about all things Celtic. Give yourself a couple of days to think about it and as Bada said, don’t let the “illigitimi carberundum”.

  31. thomthethim

If we were to have Russell starting a CL game against teams of the quality of Bayern, Dortmund, Madrid, Barca etc. then we’ll be going backwards IMO.

  32. Can anyone enlighten me with a question re: the Derry City / Sevco similarities?

I notice on the ASA reply that they said along the lines of “it[the ECA] considered RFC was still the same football club, having the same registration number with the Football Association”. This reads to me that not only did the SFA ignore rules (via a 5 way agreement) to transfer the football license, but that they also allowed the registration to be transferred (unless the ECA were mislead in this regard either by Sevco or the SFA).

Do Derry City as exists now have the same registration number with their FA as the previous incarnation did? If not, could this be why they themselves refer to an old club and a new club, as the club being a non-physical entity is purely existent as a registration number with a governing body, as a company is with companies house?

To me, if my quad was written off, and I built a new quad from the bits I could salvage plus a whole lot of new parts I would still consider this a new quad even if the DVLA would let me continue to use the same registration document… but just curious to know.

On the subject of quads. If anyone knows of anyone looking for a road legal quad I’ve a 2006 Yamaha YFM350r Raptor road legal quad for sale. Email is my blog name at gmail.com. Will happily buy beers by way of a finders fee if you know of anyone :)

What a bonus it would be if we were able to hold onto Vic, Hoops, & big FF know NFL wants to so we should pay them wages relevant and get them signed up, we wouldn’t have made the progress in CL without them & imo we could go just as far if not further this season? it would also put them in shop window again & they would bust a gut for us they can only improve as their best years are ahead of them, their stock would rise and if we sold them on it would be for serious bucks?
