Avoiding bad Fortune

789

I read our treble-winning captain, Tom Boyd, in the Herald advising Celtic to retain players who want away or decline to sign new contracts, until after their Champions League qualification ties, an idea we discussed some time ago.  Tellingly he added, “They will see when they go down south it’s not always as bright down there as they think it will be”, perhaps a reference to his time in the Chelsea defence.

There is unlikely to be much difference in value achieved between selling before or after the qualifiers, so as long as the players stay on-side with Neil Lennon and the club, there will be no reason to sell before then.

Recruiting is a different matter.  Celtic will want players in as soon as possible but with all in-demand talent, selling clubs have little reason to cash-in before the business end of August.  For me, there are some on the list we are currently linked with (I’m trying to avoid stepping onto the speculation train as long as possible) who I’ll be happy to see sign elsewhere.  Half the battle in transfer windows is to avoid the bad Fortune of splurging money on players who don’t work out.

“ElDiegoBhoy 20.30 makes a very valid point with lads like Watt, Attajic & George waiting in the wings maybe its a more experienced Striker we need to play alongside the young turks. What is the point in spending so much on an Academy if we don’t give the graduates a decent chance to make a break through to the first team.”

The problem at every club is few of the Academy graduates are good enough to make the final push. Occasionally a club will get a good crop, and for that reason alone it is worth sticking with the system.

Of our current Academy players I think two or three of them have a decent chance of breaking into the first team, but the real trick is progressing when they get there.

That also applies to players who have made an impact at other clubs, sometimes they come with expectation on their shoulders and they can’t make the step up at a club where they are expected to win every week.

I don’t think Russell is the finished article by any means – and he appears to have temperament problems – but he has been making steady progress. The same can be said about Leigh Griffiths – I wouldn’t be averse to taking a chance on one of them given we have already lost three forwards from the squad since the end of the season.

  4. I know what you are saying thomthethim, but how many guys who go out on loan come back and make it at Celtic. We left Charlie Mulgrew go “permanently” and were lucky to get him back but in general the guys we let go on loan end up playing against us a couple of years later. I do understand the dilemna, as Celtic are under pressure to win every game, and playing the kids is a huge risk. However I would love to see a lad like Attajic getting a run of a few games, bringing these lads on in the 85th minute is no good at all.

You are bang on. Feck him. I got slated on here last night for having a conversation with another poster, and mentioning eggs. This other poster took objection to eggs being mentioned in a very volatile way, which, I know most of you on here know my lifestyle, I took that very personally. He should remember where his breakfast, lunch and sometimes dinner comes from. You are, of course, very welcome to visit and taste the best free range eggs going. And if he is lurking, I am a ST holder. So get stuffed. :))

I used to raid bird’s nests for eggs and chicks when i was a kid.Looking back now it was both stupid and cruel.Wasted many a day trying in vain to catch birds with a bin lid balanced on a stick with a piece of string on it,using bits of bread under the bin lid as bait.

    Never caught one.

It was a useless technique,by the time the bin lid hit the ground, after spinning around for about twenty seconds…the birds managed to escape and flew away.

I think that magpies’ eggs are a sky blue colour with black spots, very beautiful. It’s a pity the things that hatch out of them turn into such wretched creatures.

    Haste ye back WeeFraTheTim.

Yup I see what you meant and why the belief is held but it is not beyond the bounds of possibility that audited accounts will be produced for the 2014 licencing round to get by that hurdle.

Qualifying before 2016 is unlikey but a SC win or loss to title winners ( us) is not beyond the bounds of possibility and it is this possibility that invokes Article 12 hence my point about the SFA covering up the reason for the 3 year exile under the applicable rules for their own reasons.

This is what I hope folk pick up on because it flies in the face of the integrity of Scottish football the same integrity UEFA wish to preserve for their competition.

We might not be able to get changes at the SFA but we can show where they are undermining our game.
