Back to black for Celtic

592

19 years after last having money in the bank, all we needed was ‘Armageddon’ to allow Celtic to return to the black.

Despite a drop in income from domestic football turnover increased an incredible 47.7% to £75.82m thanks to participation in the Champions League, leaving a balance of £3.76m in the bank (after season ticket money arrived in) on 30 June 2013.

The profit for last season of £9.74m more than made up for the loss of £7.37m made when competing with others who were subsequently found to be unwilling (not just unable) to pay their bills.

This summer’s transfers were split between the financial year just reported and the current period, with a £9.66m investment in football personnel and £5.19m recouped from player disposal (clearly the Wanyama sale was post-year-end.

These figures are retrospective and would have read hollow if the club didn’t reach the Champions League again this season.  With that status achieved we are now in a remarkably strong position to continue to scout, recruit, develop talent and improve the playing squad.

More detailed analysis tomorrow.

If as is being reported young Tony Watt is unfit it doesnt say good things about the lad thousands would love to play for Celtic and if all it needed was to be fit you bet they would be fit.Tony is 19 or 20 and is supposed to be a professional athlete if he is not fit at that age he never will be.I am certain his loan spell and his fitness levels and attitude when he returns to Celtic will go along way to deciding his footballing future.H.H.

Give him his dues,he scored in 92 seconds.

He may well have to screw the nut,but you canny criticise him for scoring in 92 seconds.

Yeah I did read it. He is a Celtic fan ! But like any Hun what annoys him is the truth. I keep reminding him of his boasts of ripping off visiting Irish Celtic supporters and the contempt he holds others in. If he is like rhat for real a Truly horrid individual. Perhaps his former occupation or upbringing has moulded such a feeble humanity.

Like I said you know when you have rattled the cage, when the profanities start. Funny really.

  7. My own input on the marching/protest/sad country thing.

I think this has been blown out of proportion.

Most people seem to agree that the marchers are in the wrong and the issue is around whether the description of Scotland is pejorative or not.

Sounds like the guys who posted were not sticking it to Scotland so i hope Trophyboy can compromise here or leave it alone.

I’m all for having a barny over serious points but this seems like semantics or an over reaction.

Hope that an actual game tomorrow will spread some love. Feels like there a few cliques building up round here, sandbagging and storing ammo for a fight. Not sure why: most antagonists and allies don’t even know each other.

I’ve met a few people from here with no obvious connections and they are all sound.

Most aggro here would not happen in real life so hopefully i am wrong about the tension building

    Peace

  8. Strange that there are no comments about the report on our Club’s interim financial statement by Linzi Watson in today’s Evening Times:

    http://www.eveningtimes.co.uk/celtic/u/celtic-unveil-turnover-of-7582m-up-50-on-last-years-figures.1379948639

On four separate occasions she states that it is the Club’s figures. There is no reference to an overseeing Company or Group.

It is a similar scenario in the official site who do mention Club but also Group. However, Ian Bankier signs off as Chairman, Celtic Football Club.

Am I reading more into this than actually exists? Are Celtic really adopting a very subtle approach prior to some major occurrence (the AGM)?

What part of that march made you proud to be Scottish?

What part of it contradicted the heading?

That was a rabble,a bunch of peepul who did our country no credit, they looked like they had just marched out the pub, tanked up,and taken the place over, and no-one was stopping them

There were no Police Officers marshalling the event, nor were there any stewards keeping order.

The Police Officers who WERE there should be commended for protecting a few protesters from getting their lives cut dramatically short.

That was a bunch of scum being given carte blanche to do what they will.

I posted the above article on here and on twitter earlier this evening.

It was posted to encourage debate about the issues contained within the article. Sadly there are those in our support that are almost zombie like in their apparent unwillingness to debate anything that may reflect badly on Celtic Plc. I was hammered on twitter for even having the temerity to post it, one poster who said the article was “pish” then went on to confirm that part of the article was indeed true but I was a idiot for bringing it up. The consensus from the Celtic twitter illiterate was that although the main points of the article were factual(exact amounts were not) then as these points had been highlighted by Zombies we should disregard them.

I am happy that our financial situation means we will never be in the same boat as our old foes over in Govan but when has it became the Celtic way to silence debate and ridicule those who want to debate the facts?

Sometimes I wonder if there is a section of our support that is just like them, it makes me feel uneasy.

It was a worthy post, eddie – really interesting.

And it probably led to the brilliant explanation of the situation by TBB to PF Ayr, as I’ll re-post below. Celtic’s debt position is sound, actually run with sense. Facts to shut up the ignorant Zombies…..

The answer to your question is most probably in the quote from the annual report as follows:

” “The Group and Company has a £33.49m facility with the Co-operative Bank of which £12m is in the form of overdraft and £21.94m in long-term loans. £10.97m (2011: £11.34m) of the loan facility is required to be drawn down for the term of the facility agreement.”

In other words, in order to have access to an overdraft facility to manage cashflows, the club is required to have drawn down £10.97M of loans on which we pay interest.

Were the club to repay the loan (without penalty) they would simultaneously lose the overdraft facility, something I imagine that the club would prefer to have on hand.

The reason that one is tied to the other is fairly straight forward: The overdraft ebbs and flows as business fluctuates. The bank get nothing if the account is in credit, such as it is mostly these days. In order for the bank to make a little dough – £173K annually – it insists that the club uses the loan before the overdraft.

At year end the bank owes us £3.7M when you net off the account balances against the loan. Football though is a fickle mistress, and tends to dip yer wallet periodically and without warning, hence the need to have a secure borrowing facility. The cost of the facility is the interest on the loan that isn’t needed.

    Hope that helps.
