Back to black for Celtic

592

19 years after last having money in the bank, all we needed was ‘Armageddon’ to allow Celtic to return to the black.

Despite a drop in income from domestic football turnover increased an incredible 47.7% to £75.82m thanks to participation in the Champions League, leaving a balance of £3.76m in the bank (after season ticket money arrived in) on 30 June 2013.

The profit for last season of £9.74m more than made up for the loss of £7.37m made when competing with others who were subsequently found to be unwilling (not just unable) to pay their bills.

This summer’s transfers were split between the financial year just reported and the current period, with a £9.66m investment in football personnel and £5.19m recouped from player disposal (clearly the Wanyama sale was post-year-end.

These figures are retrospective and would have read hollow if the club didn’t reach the Champions League again this season.  With that status achieved we are now in a remarkably strong position to continue to scout, recruit, develop talent and improve the playing squad.

More detailed analysis tomorrow.

When you read about another Manager getting the sack from a club you begin to wonder when will it end, the latest too bite the dust is Paulo di Canio, a favourite of mine when he played for us, entertaining to watch but he played football on a knife edge, after he left that was when my connection too Paulo finished, when he played for us he was a Celtic man, when he left he was just another player who shone for Celtic in his brief career with us.

Watching him on MOTD after the game was a pretty embarrassing affair, he looked as if he had lost touch with his faculties, trying to interpret what he was saying when he was talking to the imaginary support (most had gone home when he took to the field) I felt sad for him, when I saw that, my thoughts were ‘he’s lost it’ what a shame for an ex Celtic player. Then when the news came the next day that he had been sacked, I felt that he would struggle to get another managers job in England. I hope I’m wrong.

We then get stories coming out that there was a player revolt, Players wanting DiCanio sacked, overrated, overpaid, under achievers wanting their manager sacked, for what, offending their over inflated heads, telling them they weren’t good enough, they had only won 1 point in six games, it’s not something a manager would pat you on the back and say, ‘you’ll have to try a bit harder’, they deserved the rollicking they got, and a bit extra. Overpaid, overated, superstars, (superstars my arse),they are just a bunch of under achieving football players who I hope get punished when the next guy comes in too manage them. My advice to the next Manager is, Watch your back, you never know who’s behind you, and get rid of every whinging player who complained to the yellow livered board and done what the players asked, rather than back their manager.

Well said mate! So many guys getting paid a fortune who couldn’t kick their own arse and that’s across the whole of football, if they were a tenth as talented as P di C then maybe they would be superstars. I liked him when he played for us but his politics are not for me.

  4. Tail wagging the dog at Sunderland FC, looks like they will be on a slippery slide all the way down, a real manager will think twice before he took on that job, but then again there is Alex McLeish, COUGH,! COUGH!

There is much that I agree with in your post, if only it wasn’t in reference to Di Canio :-)

As DBBIA would say, “Modern footballers is rubbish!”

I believe that we’re seeing the effect that hype, money and adulation can have on young, modern footballers in our own Tony Watt. A young man in a position that we can only envy and dream of (though I still hope that one day Lenny is going to ask from the middle of the pitch if Hamiltontim could come down from the stands and play centre mid for the day as aconsequence of an increasing injury list!!!)

I have no doubt that Paolo’s influence at SAFC has been well intentioned and he has become increasingly frustrated at players who, in terms of ability, couldn’t lace his boots.

However, for me he’s the man who frequently has given straight armed, fascist salutes and spoken of his fondness for right wing politics.

If I could rewrite the history of Celtic (and I know that I can’t) Paolo would be absent from the pages.

In his autobiography, Italian footballer Paolo Di Canio describes finding that his then team-mate, Peter Grant suffered from ichthyophobia. During a practical joke, Di Canio describes Grant’s fearful reaction after finding a salmon head in his bed. Grant told The Independent that item in his bed was in fact a “shark’s head” and “to say I got a fright when I put my feet between the sheets is an understatement

It doesn’t matter what you do; whether it’s a footballer or a musician or a dustman; the biggest sin you can commit is to sin against your God given talent.

Peter Grant made 360+ league appearances for Celtic, Tony Watt [so far]only a handful. Most of us would hold the opinion that young Tony is more ‘talented ‘as a footballer than Peter was; but for all his flaws no one can argue that Peter didn’t squeeze every last drop out of the ability he had been given.
