Back to black for Celtic

592

19 years after last having money in the bank, all we needed was ‘Armageddon’ to allow Celtic to return to the black.

Despite a drop in income from domestic football turnover increased an incredible 47.7% to £75.82m thanks to participation in the Champions League, leaving a balance of £3.76m in the bank (after season ticket money arrived in) on 30 June 2013.

The profit for last season of £9.74m more than made up for the loss of £7.37m made when competing with others who were subsequently found to be unwilling (not just unable) to pay their bills.

This summer’s transfers were split between the financial year just reported and the current period, with a £9.66m investment in football personnel and £5.19m recouped from player disposal (clearly the Wanyama sale was post-year-end.

These figures are retrospective and would have read hollow if the club didn’t reach the Champions League again this season.  With that status achieved we are now in a remarkably strong position to continue to scout, recruit, develop talent and improve the playing squad.

More detailed analysis tomorrow.

If I saw a video of Celtic fans misbehaving and it was entitled “sad little Celtic” or somesuch, I’d be pissed off. Celtic is more than a club and if you slag them, you slag me (sort of:-)

Not presuming, but I think that’s what is bugging trophybhoy.

Slag off the dobs, or the police, or the politicians, but put the big brush away. It’s not all Scotia’s fault.

The deal is forever. I have been unable to any answer to why we just can’t pay this off now, while we can. It would be cheaper to accept the Co-op’s loan offer, which we don’t need either.

…….There are players on the periphery who want to prove their worth, among them Tom Rogic and the recent signings Teemu Pukki, Nir Biton and Derk Boerrigter will all feature tonight. “We’ll have to, but it won’t be drastic changes,” said Lennon, who has invited Nicolas Mezquida, a 21-year-old Uruguayan striker, to the club for a trial. “Every tournament you are in you want to win it. I have to be careful, we want to keep the momentum going and Morton will come with nothing to lose. I know they’re in a bit of a bad run at the moment, but the team has been pretty consistent in the past couple of seasons. I don’t want this to be the game when they turn things around.

“It’s not staking a claim, but saying ‘I’m good enough, if you bring me in it will be a seamless transition’. That’s what I’m looking for. They have the desire and have been patient. Their attitude is good and they know what is required.”

Publication of the revenues that Serie A clubs receive from kit manufacturers and sponsors has highlighted the gap between clubs within the Italian top flight and also with their European counterparts.

AC Milan top the list with just under €35 million through their deal with Adidas and Fly Emirates, while city rivals Inter are a close second with their long-standing association with Nike and Pirelli.

However, Sportweek report that after that after you remove the top five clubs from the €159m that Serie A clubs generate in total the remaining 15 sides’ average barely €3m from their current deals.

Capital side Roma this season have no sponsorship deals in place, although they have negotiated a manufacturing deal with Nike that begins at the end of the campaign.

Whilst the gap between some of Italy’s top clubs remains the difference in revenue generation is also notable against European rivals, Manchester United receive around €53m form Chevrolet without them even appearing on the Premier League sides match shirt.

In Spain and Germany Barcelona and Bayern Munich both earn €30m for their deals with Qatar Airways and Deutsche Telekom respectively and Fly Emirates pay Real Madrid €25m, nearly double what the Rossoneri receive from the airline.

    1. AC Milan €33.8m (Adidas €20m and Fly Emirates €13.8m)

    2. Inter €31.4m (Nike €18.2m and Pirelli €13.2m)

    3. Juventus €28m (Nike €16.5m and Jeep €11.5m)

    4. Napoli €17.2m (Macron €7.5 and Lethe/MSc €9.7m)

    5. Sassuolo €11.4m (Sportika €400,000 and Mapei €11m)

Zenit St Petersburg are the latest club to express an interest in free-scoring Heerenveen hitman Alfred Finnbogason. He enjoyed a superb debut season at Heerenveen, netting 24 times in 33 league outings, and he has started this season in blistering form with nine goals in just six Eredivisie appearances. The 24-year-old is attracting interest from all over Europe – he is also wanted by clubs in Germany and Italy – but Zenit are considering a January bid.

The Russian giants are willing to pay £8.5m for Finnbogason, who cost just £420,000 when he moved from Lokeren to Heerenveen last year.

Congrats and good luck to Jackson Irvine………….

Holger Osieck has included Mathew Leckie, Oliver Bozanic and Jackson Irvine in the latest Socceroos squad. Osieck’s position has been the subject of intense scrutiny following the embarrassing 6-0 friendly defeat to Brazil on September 7, with fans and media alike calling for major changes ahead of the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Seeking to combat the criticism, and possibly acting under orders from Football Federation Australia, Osieck has picked a larger group of 24 players with several notable changes, for the matches against France in Paris on October 11 and Canada at Fulham’s Craven Cottage four days later.

Very interesting figures, thanks for that, especially La Signora in 3rd place. Do you think they’re still recovering from their ‘toxic’ state of the scandal?

Also interesting to note the cliff edge drop from the perennial European entrants to the Serie A fodder, whose deals are not as good as Celtic’s. Were we to have an automatic route to the Group stages I reckon we might be able to secure deals nearer Napoli’s.

We’re committed to Magners for 3 years but on completion it might well be worth looking at separate domestic and European sponsors. Spurs have done it. It’s the shirt sponsor rather than the kit sponsor where there margins are. Tipperary Water excepted.
