Background on the SPFL and Sky negotiations

213

I see reports that the SPFL are looking to compensate for the TV contract for this season not being fulfilled by reducing the next five-year deal by £300k per season.  It is worth putting some perspective on where the SPFL finds itself before assessing the merits of their approach.

The SPFL failed to perform to the existing contract, which specified a number of games to be broadcast at set times and dates, with backup dates available where re-arranged fixtures were necessary.  These dates were all to be complete by 31 May, games played after this date would be outside Sky’s agreed (and premium) slots, and, as the Premier League in England have found out, would still constitute a failure to perform the contract.

Sky sold sponsorship and advertising on the back of this contract, which they themselves were unable to perform.  Not only are subsequent payments in these contracts (SPFL with Sky and Sky with their advertisers) no longer due, an earlier payment that was made against a contract that was not performed can be subject to reclaim.

I am sure Sky’s legals were clear, end of season games deciding the title, relegation and European places, generate above average viewership and advertising revenue.  They also provide video for future promotion of their sports product.

If this went to court, Sky would need to demonstrate a loss before forcing a repayment of monies, but their core metrics would support at least some compensation.  These metrics are likely to have featured when Neil Doncaster first discussed the matter with Sky back in March.  Control was always with the broadcaster; finding a solution that did not bankrupt the league was the primary objective.

A £300k rebate for five years represents a 1% discount on the reported figure Sky will pay the SPFL.  In the circumstances, this would be astonishing.  The deal is yet to be concluded, but if and when it is, it will be informative to see how reporting angles split on the story.

Di Celtic think the virtual ST,makes any refund options at the end of the season null and void?

  2. This might be the start of a game changer as far as subscription TV is concerned,

If Sky, BT or Celtic TV or anyone else for that matter could provide me with a channel that would show all Celtic games I wouldn’t be too fussy about the cost, I believe that tens of thousands of other Tims would be of the same mind.

I think the same model would be reciprocated amongst the fans of most Football Clubs to varying degrees,

Give the Punters what they want,

Thanks for that info on the Broonie medals. Don`t know how I didn`t see it. Read the article twice and still missed it !

    Here we go

10IAR * (the next one will only be on the telly)

  5. I remember back in the 50s when the Hungarians visited Hampden SFA had to sell a percentage of the capacity before the game was allowed to be televised. This may have also happened for some cup finals.

So why can’t Celtic TV allow UK subscribers to watch home games live if all STs are sold?

  6. CORKCELT on 3RD JUNE 2020 3:15 PM

    ………..

I agree CORKCELT, as I am lucky enough to be able to afford to pay subscription to whoever just to see Celtic games.

I have thought long and hard enough about trying to get a season ticket for Celtic Park, especially in a disabled section ( IF there is one ?), but I can only imagine there may be a waiting list for that also ?

In practical terms, it would be very difficult for me to attend Celtic Park as a season Ticket holder once again UNLESS I didnt have to climb too many steps and/or the Toilets are very nearby LOL ?

I would be getting taxis to and from Celtic Park, as I couldnt walk some distances to and from a Bus Stop etc.

Sadly, I had to give up my season Book a few years ago due to losing my job cos of a medical condition. I had a terrific seat in the Lower North Stand, right next to an aisle and very close to toilets.

  7. I assume away games would be dependent on the ‘away’ team allowing Celtic / Sky to show the game

Sky show most of Celtic’s away league games anyway

  8. GG I remember Scotland playing a WC qualifier in a Spain which was televised throughout the Uk except Scotland as there was some minor league game on that night. The rule at the time was if any game with an sfa affiliated team playing then nae telly allowed. BTW Spain won 4-1.

I believe we also missed out on an ECWC Final at hampden being shown live tae for the same reason.

  9. I have just spoken on the phone to a Pub owner in Glasgow city centre and it appears that Pubs with Beer Gardens and/or OUTSIDE seating etc are hopeful that those Pubs will re open on 18th June ?

However, the problem may be the Govt ruling that any Pub that does open, will need to ensure that Toilets are cleaned after anyone uses it ?

That would obviously be real headache for most Pub owners I fear…as I can only imagine they could adapt to social distancing inside Pubs in respect of Folk going to and from Toilets….but the real problem would be the constant Cleaning of Toilets ?

For £644,I would be hoping for Celtic to allow free access to all away games via Celtic TV,on top of the virtual season book.

    to damn right!

  11. I thought about asking the Pub owner IF his Pub was allowed to open on 18th June because it had outside facilities etc…”Would you be cashing in by increasing your prices, considering that the vast majority of other Pubs will NOT be allowed to open on 18th June” ?

I refrained from asking that question….ad I didnt wish to be BARRED Before they had even opened up !

    LOL

He also mentioned the possibility of hiring an extra staff member(s)…just to clean/wipe the toilets…but to so would obviously incur more staff wages etc ?

He sounded optimistic about being reopened on 18th June…IF they can get guidance from the Scottish Govt and then weigh up their options about opening ?

Big Jimmy- a pal has a pub in Merchant City, he’s been told the date they are looking at for outside opening is 18th June

  13. More on reconstruction …

The SPFL has asked clubs if they would back a 14-team Scottish Premiership for next season and, if not, how might their objections be overcome.

In a letter to clubs in the top two tiers, chief executive Neil Doncaster queried if enlarging the Premiership for five years would be more palatable.

He also asked clubs what other factors should be taken into account around league reconstruction.

Responses have been requested by 17:00 BST on Friday.

  14. !!Bada Bing!! on

You could go to a home game and miss next home game,

    52k STs

    26k per home game

  15. Corruption and Brown Letters is the Problem with all Sports today,Look at all the major Sports that the BBC have lost over the yrs,yet they continue to pay big wages on Presenters, for highlights, what a joke that is,I have said for years that the Public Broadcaster is a Gravy Train, just look at the ex STV Presenters that have been giving big redundancy payments, that have gained employment with the BBC,it’s needing a complete overhaul it doesn’t need all these employees, make massive cuts, then at least they could compete with the likes off SKY and BT Sports to show live sports, and finally the only ones I see that getting good deals are ex sports people who have already made good salaries, but the ordinary fan gets ripped off.

  16. !!Bada Bing!! on

CELTIC will communicate further details of how their virtual season ticket for season 2020-21 will work in the next few days, according to the club’s supporters liaison officer John Paul Taylor.

The fans’ representative says no additional purchase or Sky Sports subscription will be required for existing season ticket holders to stream matches to which they are unable to attend – but it was less clear for now whether non-season ticket holders will be able to buy the season-long streaming package.

  17. Apparently tickets limited to only those with STs then? According to Ewan Murray…

    Anyone got a sausage ?

  18. !!Bada Bing!! on

Big W- Sky will take as much money as they can get from anyone,a big database of ST Holders in Scotland, to offer discounted packages as well.

  19. Current ST entitles you to attend all 19 home SPFL games over the season

I assume the ‘virtual’ ST entitles you to live coverage of home matches for as long as restrictions are in place.

All SPFL matches have been covered previously for live transmission (either Celtic TV (outside UK/ Ireland) or Sky / BT) and for highlights programs e.g BBC etc.

Who is providing the matches and what platforms other than TV (eg tablet etc) might be available still to be clarified.

Currently La Liga, Man Utd and Liverpool have dedicated TV channels (as Celtic did at one time), all available through subscription, so the virtual ST may operate in a similar fashion or possibly through an internet link or App.

Perhaps the outdated “no live football between 3pm and 5:15pm on a saturday” nonsense might disappear permanently as a consequence.

Whether single match virtual tickets will be available is debatable but money talks when income stream is under threat.

Celtic welcomes return to action for season ticket holders

CELTIC Football Club welcomes the work undertaken by the SPFL and SKY in ensuring a framework for the return of Scottish Premiership matches.

Following an announcement today, new proposals allow clubs to sell a virtual season ticket, where home SPFL league matches which cannot be attended due to social distancing rules, will be available to view on a bespoke club platforms.

Celtic is delighted to announce that this will be available as part of its season ticket offering, meaning Celtic season ticket holders will have exclusive access to every home SPFL league match as we go for 10 in a row.

This online access will be available to season ticket holders while social distancing measures prevent fans from attending matches.

Celtic will be announcing its detailed plans in the next few days in relation to the coming season. Celtic season ticket holders who have already renewed for the season will have access to the virtual season ticket as part of their season ticket.

The only way to guarantee access to every kick of the ball from Celtic Park will be through the Celtic season ticket.

Celtic Chief Executive, Peter Lawwell, said: “The current crisis has had huge implications for the club and our supporters. Once again, I would like to thank our fans for their patience, understanding and support during these unprecedented times.

“I have already said, our priority has been to look at ways in which can resume football and ultimately get our supporters back safely to Celtic Park as soon as possible.

“Until we can welcome our fans back, we want our fans to stay as close to the Club and be part of everything we do. It is imperative we cater for the needs of our supporters. These proposals are great news.

“The access will be available while social distancing measures prevent fans from attending matches and will mean that our season ticket holders, exclusively, will be part of every SPFL home game.

“I would like to thank Neil Doncaster, the SPFL Board and SKY for the work they have done in bringing this arrangement together.

“We have already been liaising closely with football’s joint response group and Scottish Government in striving to ensure that our fans, the lifeblood of the game, can return to matches as quickly as we can. We will continue this work.

“Everyone at Celtic was delighted to deliver 9 in a Row for our fans. It was a season where we produced brilliant, attacking, winning football. Now we focus on the next chapter.

“Clearly we have another exciting season ahead and the chance to make even more history, and we want our fans with us every step of the way. We will need you now, more than ever. Thank you for your continued support”

So if only one member of a household has a ST the rest of the family and friends will be able to watch at no further cost?

  23. The problem with away games is that they are not Celtic’s to sell or to stream in the UK or Ireland, either free or for a subscriptions.

The problem with extending the virtual season ticket beyond the existing Season Ticket Holders, is that you will be competing with Sky,

The only way that might work is if Sky were getting a cut and it was worth their while.

We as a Club are not an island if we were able to sell our games direct to our fans, ever Club in the UK would want to do exactly the same,

  24. What happens to the fans and businesses who have corporate boxes/ seats. Are they getting carry outs and takeaways delivered free.🤭

Full price season tickets x 2 in our house would mean a behind closed doors tv game would cost us around £50 to watch.

Can’t have member of other households in your home – so they’ll have to sit in the garden ( max of 8) 🤭

  27. The Bhoyfromuncle,

Nail on the head. My first thought was why would you have 2 or 3 tickets in a family.

My second thought was Season Book Holders will suddenly find themselves very popular,

  28. Jimmynotpaul on

    BHOYWITHSEETHROUGHEYES

That appears to be an immediate issue.

The more people who have season tickets in the same household, the more expensive it will be to watch, pro rata.

  29. Have I told every ST holder here how much I respect them, love them and cherish their very existence?

    Oh dear

  32. Monaghan1900 on

From the BBC…today, in case you were wondering:

“A woman has lost her quest to have an Irish epitaph engraved without translation on her mother’s tombstone in an English cemetery.

Caroline Newey’s mother, Margaret Keane died two years ago and is buried in grounds owned by St Giles’ Church, Exhall, north of Coventry.

Mrs Newey wanted her mother’s headstone inscription to read: “In ár gcroíthe go deo” (“In our hearts forever”).

But a judge said untranslated, this may “be seen as a political statement”.

“Given the passions and feelings connected with the use of Irish Gaelic, there is a sad risk that the phrase would be regarded as some form of slogan or that its inclusion without translation would, of itself, be seen as a political statement,” said Judge Stephen Eyre, QC, chancellor of the Diocese of Coventry.

Untranslated Irish words would be “unintelligible to all but a small minority of readers”, he ruled in his judgment for the Church of England consistory court on 6 May.

He authorised a memorial which included a translation of the phrase in English.”
