Bayo: opponents will hate him and his goal stats will impress. The Run

202

I lost count on how many times Bayo was written off by people who had seen less than 10 minutes of him.  Even after the Cluj defeat, when he appeared as an 88th minute substitute, he was described to me as a ‘lamppost’.  Similar things could be said about the Tom Rogic, Ryan Christie, Callum McGregor, Odsonne Edouard and even Moussa Dembele.  It is almost as though players do not get better after they settle in the club/country and grow into the Celtic shirt.

For the best part of 30 years, Celtic failed to improve players compared to the average domestic or European competitor.  We also failed to convert often prodigious young talent into accomplished first team members.  Now there is a steady stream of youth players making the grade, Mikey Johnston being the most recent and players arrive at Celtic with a much better than average chance of improving.

I don’t know what Bayo is going to achieve, but his first start compares to any from a Celtic striker in recent memory.  He is quick, has good upper-body strength, and throws himself around in the air to great effect, something that neither Odsonne or Leigh Griffiths are suited for.  My guess is, opponents will hate playing against him and his goals stats will be better than anyone expects.

The Great Scottish Run is five weeks away.  If you are booked in and not yet linked with a beneficiary, or fancy a crack at the 10k or Half Marathon, there is still time to enter and run for the Celtic FC Foundation.

Running through Glasgow in a Celtic Foundation T-shirt is a life affirming experience.  You get to represent something special, something you believe in.  This is different from any other Celtic experience I’ve had.

If you are a runner, I can recommend it, details here.  I’m going to enter but I’ve hardly put my trainers on this year.  There’s a lot of work to do between now and then….

The Bolton and Bury situation, is there an opportunity there?

    Not sure there is.

England has a pyramidical system so any claim to a space falls to those who are immediately below the clubs that die e.g. those who just missed out on promotion from League Two last Year.

There may be an argument made for offering to provide a team, like our reserves, to fulfil the fixtures since the other possible replacement clubs have begun this year’s league campaign in their respective divisions but I doubt any other English based club would see it that way.

In the final analysis, the leverage is with the English league and not ourselves. It would cause less hassle for them if one or both clubs just dropped out, unreplaced, and all their scores so far were just scrubbed than to invite one or two new teams to leapfrog the pyramid system straight into League One.

Also you have to consider what the local population would feel about a replacement team fulfilling their fixtures, especially if they were told to do so out of a stadium in the same town. Would you support a team sent in to replace the original Celtic, even if it added your name and became Celtic Bury or Celtic Bolton? You would more likely get resentment and hostility than any thanks and support.

So, all in all, I cannot see it. Too many factors going against it; not enough votes in favour of it. The only political support I could foresee would be from the Boris wing trying to tie Scotland into the economic advantages of the English league system as a way to embarrass the SNP. Then we would have a support which might suddenly lose its enthusiasm for an English move and convince itself that we have to stay and see out 9 and 10iar.

Most likely outcome is Bury and Bolton are both gone and will have to return as a new amateur or semi-pro team from League 14 level or so.

  4. It makes you wonder if these clowns that keep posting (Lawell out) were Celtic supporters when the Kellys, and Whites, were in control of Celtic, surely they couldn’t be Supporters back then when Celtic ran into Finaciial difficulties. If it hadn’t been for Fergus Peter Lawwell wouldn’t have been anywhere ,We would have been closed by the Bank of Scotland.

Arsenal in 2008 tried to take PL when he was Celtic’s director of Finance, to be their CEO, but PL rejected the move,as he was happy to stay at Celtic, I believe that PL in 2010 took Celtic out of debt, and got the CEO job when Cassidy resigned.

And as far as the heated driveway goes, it was in the Mansion when he bought it.

By the way to get PL out you would have to have enough shares to vote him out, and that is virtually impossible, The three top shareholders have more than fifty per cent of the shares, and they will not sack the money maker for them.

i think you kind of answered your own argument

your last paragraph explains why people want him out

he is simply running the plc to make himself and his fellow cronies as much cash as possible

and it is being done so to the detriment of the football team

this is our football club which we spend a lot on, both financially and emotionally

it is not a bank or a supermarket

but more than ever it is now being controlled by folk whose overbearing interest is to make themselves collossal amounts of cash

  6. Hopefully Lenny doesn’t doesn’t pull his usual joker from the pack in a big game. Keep it simple and stick to what we know works, Neil.

I noticed they’re favourites for the game on Sunday which in itself shows how we’ve let this game get away from us. While we remain big favourites for the league, on the back of Cluj, I don’t think Lenny can afford to get beat in Sunday. He must get at least a point.

    Forster -Elhamed- Ajer-Julien- Boli-Brown-McGregor-Christie-Forrest-Édouard-Griffiths.

  7. Thursday is a perfect opportunity to put in place a counter attacking game style for Sunday. A solid defensive game on Thursday will go a long way toward winning on Sunday.

  8. Sipsini, it made me wonder.

SFTB’s, I understand the arguments, and reasons against this, but one thing did make me think.

    Money.

It depends on how much we can add financially, if it can be shown we can help open up additional markets, or just show we can expand existing, there may be an economic argument to be made.

    Simply exploring possibilities.

To be totally honest I haven’t decided if it’s something I’d want.

  9. I would guess that any one of us who had PLs job and was offered multi millions per annum to run the team to Desmonds idea of a successful team but not the fans idea of a successful team would do exactly what PL is doing……..or are we saying we would give up the personal bonus for an extended run in Europe?……Really?

Just as it should be . No leapfrogging legitimate clubs on the waiting list . No corrupt systems like we have in Scottish fitba.

  11. I’m thinking Desmonds idea of succes is money in the bank and large “directors” dividends…..now that’s what a multi billionaire calls success

  12. LETS ALL DO THE HUDDLE ? on 26TH AUGUST 2019 7:42 PM.

You should have invested in some shares when they were worth 20p a share, I ivested some money, not to make money but help Celtic when they were having Finacial problems,I have a 4 figure amount of shares, but I’d never sell them, they will be handed down to someone who supports Celtic, when I pop my clogs..

    How much is colossal ?

PL’s renumeration package for success in trying to win the scottish league and cups counts as colossal to me considering the relative financial strength of the opposition

because lets be honest, we arent trying to do anything in europe from a transfer budget perspective

yet we pay fortunes to watch our euro games many of which we are completely ill-equiped to compete in

and i dont just mean games against barca etc

we look out our depth against even mediocre euro teams

  16. Good evening CQN not been on for a wee bit. Want to share with you one of the best days I have had a Celtic Park in a long while.

Took my Mum, 78 years young to her first game in 59 years. We did the Kerrydale experiment, accompanied by my wee Bros. and a wee Sister. Started off by me introducing myself to NL as Lennybhoy, told him we met before, quick photo opportunity, he shook my hand and said it was good to meet me again. Alas Mum was not quick enough before he disappeared. Still a few drinks in the Kerrydale, Mum on the water, a wee sing song, a few pics, video of Mum singing along to Grace with a wee shout out from Liam to her, thanks Liam. And thanks to John from Springburn who gave my Mum his Grace scarf.

I spoke to my Mum tonight, asked how she enjoyed her day, fantastic she said, thank you, I’ll live on my day for years.

She shed a tear yesterday, a tear of joy because she was there. I shed a tear too, grateful I could take my Mum.

A great day with a great woman, with my Bros. and one of my sister.

Thank you Mum for yesterday and for all the memories, love you.

    Until we meet again…

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!
