BBC need to fortify or shut the doors

1483

It doesn’t really matter to me how other people write their own history.  If Queens Park claim to be the same Club as the Queen of Clubs, they are welcome to, as long as they respectfully allow me to express scepticism.  Fortunately, Queens Park’s business model is not dependent on making such an outlandish claim.

A whole lot of nonsense has been written on the subject of a recently liquidated football club, “it was the holding company that was liquidated”, when it wasn’t actually a holding company, and then we have claims about advice from a “panel of the London Stock Exchange”, which was quickly withdrawn.

We are asked to believe that a football club cannot go out of business.  It’s an interesting thought, not one I subscribe to, but interesting nonetheless.  If you are happy with this belief, fair play to you, it doesn’t matter what anyone else believes.

I’ve met Jim Spence.  He’s a guy who emerged from the Dundee Untied fanzine world and established a reputable career in the game.  His affinity for United has never been hidden, nor should it be.  United, as all clubs, have gone through periods of turmoil but Jim has called things as he has seen them, with his own club, and with others.

This week Jim made a comment about a football club which went into liquidation.  It was more tempered than comments made by a former manager and director of the liquidated club, by the chief executive of its successor club, by all the contemporary newspaper coverage, and by the successor club’s current head of PR.  Despite this, Jim has been on the receiving end of a sustained campaign by the thought police.

Jim may privately think what those at the successor club once said, but if he also wants to express those thoughts, the consequences can be acute.

He’s not alone.  I know others in the media who have told me straight that they are not prepared to touch the Newco/Sameco subject, the resultant hassle is not what they got into journalism for.

Charlotte Fakes has given us a glimpse into how powerful people can manipulate and control Scotland.  It has given reason to pause ahead of next year’s big decisions.  The BBC and only the BBC are strong enough to stand up against bullying, you can forget the commercial media for one simple reason, this subject is the equivalent of commercial self-harm.

It wouldn’t seem like the weekend without Rangers International writing about going legal on someone or other, although I suspect they’ll be content having played to the gallery with this one and not trouble the BBC, but questions remain for the BBC, no matter what happens next.

I consume enormous volumes of BBC output every month, it is my first port of call for news, and often my last.  It is one of the best aspects of British life, but if it can be intimidated like the commercial media, there is no point in it existing in the first place.

Fortify your journalists or shut the doors.

Impulsive McCoist compiling portfolio of howlers

Ally McCoist’s claim to have as formidable a squad of players as any club in the country outside champions Celtic would do nothing to dispel the impression that his tongue these days is quicker than his wits.

The words had hardly left the Rangers manager’s lips when his side were beaten 3-1 at home in a closed-doors friendly by Hibernian, who could not reasonably be described as the galacticos of the SPFL’s Premiership.

The former striker’s readiness with the impulsive, unconsidered response may be rooted in his history as a media-friendly figure. He has, after all, been what is known these days as the go-to personality for the telling quote for as long as anyone (including himself) can remember. It is possible that McCoist has become so practised in the art of filling space that he cannot break the habit.

Even so, he has been steadily compiling what might be called a portfolio of outbursts, some of them grossly ill-advised and even dangerous. McCoist’s errant views began at Dunfermline two years ago when, without having seen the incident, he insisted that Steven Naismith could not be guilty of elbowing Austin McCann because “he’s not that type of lad”. Naismith, of course, was caught on camera and suspended.

There followed the infamous “we want to know who these people are” demand in the wake of the review panel who sat to consider Rangers’ rules breaches in the wake of their entering administration.

A similar noise was made over the question of Rangers being fined for their indiscretions while Hearts and Dunfermline were not. On both occasions, the SFA revealed that McCoist (and, in the latter case, his chief executive, Craig Mather) already knew the answers.

Perhaps most seriously of all, McCoist declared himself “appalled” by the arson attack on the bus depot which housed Rangers’ new luxury coach, clearly implying that it had been carried out by rival football fans. The subsequent police investigation disclosed that the crime was not related to football.

If these previous retorts are a measure of his judgment, there is unlikely to be a stampede of punters desperate to plunge on Rangers for the only “major” left to them, the Scottish Cup.

  10. Just had a cursory look on Companies House web check. 1964 is furthest anything with a Govan address goes back…….surely indicative that oldco are no more?

They are certainly not an active and trading company which explains why they have been removed.

When you are removed from the register the law treats you as if you are dead, just as it treats a PLC or LTD company as a legal entity.

Oldco never went into administration for being in debt, they went into administration at the instigation of HMRC because of unpaid tax and NI contributions.

I believe they are still in administration until HMRC nails the lid down for the last time (may be wrong here)

As HMRC is not finished with them they are allowed to wear the same jerseys for the moment but when its all over they need to change their jerseys so that the public is not confused with the oldco and any newco providing the same services.

The myth of continuity is being kept alive by SMSM because:

    1. The 80% of the Scottish population that comprises orcdom in its many guises needs the contiguous history to underpin and reinforce their cultural brand otherwise they disintegrate culturally and socially. A rootless mass disconnected from the country with neither focus nor perceived moral compass.

People may not be aware but oldco was formed as a reaction and bulwark to the Catholic, Irish, Fenian success of Celtic FC…….nothing else.

We were trying to feed people while oldco were trying to be superior…..kind of says it all really.

    2. A business needs its branding. Its what sets it apart from its competitors and adds perceived value. You build brand by consistently delivering a needed and reliable product over time at a competitive price……its the reason Heinz and Coca-Cola are still in business a 100 years+ later.

You can argue Celtic without 1888 after its name is still Celtic but it is not and by deduction if oldco are a 2012 entity they are no different to Livingstone, Meadowbank Thistle, Third Lanark et al.

Its interesting to watch orcdom in general from this perspective. The newco and other squabblers remind me of big cats feeding on a dead carcass with the hyenas lying in wait for the scraps and the vultures circling for whats left.

They are definitely dying and as each season passes more of them will come to realise it and the process will accelerate itself.

They have no wish to be the same level as mid table SPL teams fighting for second place. Its supremacy or nothing with them.

To the person who first penned the “your Grandchildren will be Celtic supporters”…….we all should salute you.

I had a few conversations with him on the blog when he announced initially that he had COPD as this what took my late father (RIP) in the end.

Unfortunately Miki67 then confirmed his illness was much more serious but he bore it with great dignity and was a tremendous contributor to the site.

Thanks for the text. As I replied, have been really busy this week and my ole mum is still recovering. How the heck she does it, I will never know. Was up today and the nursing staff reckon it was a miracle she survived. I, of course, put them straight and told them she was being prayed for worldwide through a Celtic blog. The look on their face was priceless. Anyhoo, brilliant idea on the Miki67 tribute. Hope that comes off. How are you at the end of the day? Hope you are well.

  17. Wonderful tributes today for the inspirational Miki67.

Since I came onto this hallowed site I have been impressed with many , many posters and Miki67 absolutely stood amongst the best of them.

I remember when he came on with his terrible news and the wealth of responses he got from just regular Celtic ghuys .

I am sure he must have taken some comfort from the words that were offerred and the prayers that were said.

Miki has lost the final battle but he was delighted that we won the war against the baddies.

If someone told me 2 years ago that I would be so deeply affected by the death of someone I never met I would have thought them mad !

I hope Larrybhoy, Viv & Miki’ s family can find some peace and happiness in his memory.

Yeah the BBC is big enough to take on the bully boys but it simply must be BBC UK and not Scotland. We all know their agenda, don’t we, or put another way they do like their trousers legs rolled up. Smoke and mirrors and I will be surprised if they don’t get away with it and get compensated for all the wrong doing which they suffered. Mind you, at least they still have 5 stars on their shirts the wee souls. What a joke they are.

Hop for a great day for the love-in tomorrow, wish I could be there but alas, no can do.
