Bigger questions loom than reconstruction

1092

We now know that Craig Whyte met Neil Doncaster and Ralph Topping, directors of the SPL, in London in October 2011 and informed them of the likelihood that Rangers would go into liquidation.  Whyte’s plan, to start a Newco and have it parachuted into top flight football was only taken seriously as a result of these three having a head start on everyone else and doing some preparatory work.

Charles Green has no such plans.  If he loses Ibrox, becomes embroiled in IPO-related troubles or fails to bridge the gap between money-in and money-out, an unplanned liquidation could follow with a potentially protracted period where physical assets are moribund and playing assets and other staff are released.

The SPL and SFL would do well to consider ‘what next?’ when they hold separate meetings next week.  The century-old ways are gone, things will never be the same again.

I’m really pleased the aforementioned Charlie issued an apology for his offending comments, even if he did so under duress from the SFA.  This kind of rhetoric has taken control within football in some European countries.  Once the door is open it is hard to close it again.

  1. Doc.

    Yes.

In Scotland they were used twice as often against the huns as against Celtic supporters.

This imbalance is now being redressed.

On banning orders in England the huns are on a different planet from us.

There is a myth they peddle about banning orders against Celtic fans after the Blackburn game. However, the number they use is applications rather than orders granted.

Please don’t ask me back the above. I just remember it. Honest.

    ……….

Maybe so for some. The avoidable loss of life of the hunger strikers is what my post refers to, I’m glad our friends across Europe have tasted freedom in our time thanks to the courage and bravery of their people’s, I doubt Maggie had much of a say in it.

As you could guess no defence of the Butcher’s Apron from me for security reasons they dont want the northern part of the island exposed to drug or terrorist activity and having a Union of 4 countries gives the UK much bigger clout and a seat at the G8 table and the UN security council, it is a trade off.

When small countries all over Europe going to the wall because they are too small to withstand major economic shocks, why would we take a chance with independence we will have to re-apply to the Euro Union and sign up to the Euro a discredited currency their is no economic argument for an independent Scotland

On the fascist debate I worry that the Orange Klan, the SDL and Bnp will start a Party of the right and they will win seats in urban areas and Lanarkshire and Ayrshire lists even if they get even 4 seats they could be the minority party that holds the balance of power do you think a desperate SNP would not do a deal with an outright fascist party, I think they would.

The orange Klan are preparing for this just now as they think their “culture” is under threat

    Thanks again.

So the legislation already existed, and was in use.

The amount of times it was used on Oldcos supporters was far more, and the new Act is being used to even things up.

Just trying to get the point clear, Christine Graham seems to be getting her way, at least to some extent. A law made to “even things up” so to speak.

Shameful, the law to deal with actual crime already existed but those committed the crimes didn’t suit the powers that be, so a new law skews the figures to she’d a different light on Scotland to those outside.

    Is that a fair summation?

Hopefully the Judiciary will keep getting verdicts correct and the “mince” legislation will be repealed.

Police arrested four people at Dundee’s Boxing Day match against Celtic

Prosecutors are considering appealing the not guilty verdict in the trial of a Celtic fan caught singing a pro-terrorist song at Dundee’s Dens Park.

Dion McLeish was cleared at Dundee Sheriff Court of inciting public disorder during Dundee’s Boxing Day match against Celtic.

Sheriff Richard Davidson said the legislation under which he was being tried was “horribly drafted”.

The Crown Office is considering an appeal over the verdict.

Mr McLeish, 20, from Clydebank, was filmed by police officers at Dundee’s Dens Park ground on Boxing Day singing the song “Roll of Honour”, which celebrates IRA and INLA hunger strikers during the Troubles.

But Sheriff Richard Davidson ruled during the trial last week that police officers could not give “opinion” evidence that the song was linked to proscribed terrorist organisations, and then described the new anti-sectarianism legislation McLeish was tried under as “horribly drafted”.

The Crown Office and Scottish government have insisted the laws were “working well” and “taking a hard line on sectarianism”.

    Denominational schools

The Scottish government said the legislation would be reviewed at the end of the coming football season, with a report to go before the Scottish Parliament by the following summer.

Prosecutors have asked for reports to be prepared as they consider an appeal against the ruling in Mr McLeish’s case, in which the sheriff stated sectarianism should be tackled by abolishing denominational schools.

A Crown Office spokesman said: “The Crown notes the sheriff’s decision in this case. Crown counsel has asked the procurator fiscal for a report in order to consider an appeal in light of the sheriff’s comments.”

Sheriff Davidson, speaking during a legal debate at Mr McLeish’s trial, criticised the laws.

He said: “In this context I think that potentially those who attend Murrayfield and sing Flower of Scotland – there might be a problem.”

    Not concerned

Referring to the legislation, Sheriff Davidson said: “Somehow the word mince comes to mind.”

Mr McLeish was one of four fans who had been arrested at the match, with a further supporter reported to the procurator fiscal.

Finding the 20-year-old not guilty, Sheriff Davidson added: “I’ve been attending football matches since 1957 and there is nothing I’ve seen in this particular case that would cause me the slightest concern.

“Sectarianism is a blight on Scottish society, but this isn’t the way to tackle it. The way to tackle it is to do away with denominational schools.

“If they can proscribe a list of songs which people are banned from singing, they will find the courts are full and the football grounds are empty.”

Personally I don’t see how losing a population of 6m will make a diff to G8 or UN Security Council. Those positions are secured historically based on our ownership of nukes and special friendship with US.

Also don’t understand why we necessarily will have to join the Euro! Is that a definite? Has there been other options looked at?

After an Independance vote I assume their would be an immediate election to determine who governs an Independant Scotland as the SNP do not have that mandate from the population. Do you not believe Labour could win that election and go on to govern an Independant Scotland learning lessons from the smaller nations who have failed!

Also, it was not that long ago UK banks were in turmoil and one or two still are! We are in a double dip recession and trillions of debt. Hardly a successful model.

I’d also not term either Greece or Spain smaller nations. Both of whom are struggling to cope in this economic climate under pressure from a German oligarch government ruling Euro economics with an iron fist.

  22. Forgive me for butting in with a basic football question but when these thoughts come into my mind I’m better to ask before I forget ;-)

In relation to the reconstruction proposals and the possibility of the top 2 divisions starting as 12-12 but then moving to 8-8-8 after the first 2 rounds of fixtures what’s the situation regarding the points secured up to that point? I assume the top 8 and the (very) bottom 8 simply carry on from where they were. But do the bottom 4 from the top 12 and the top 4 from the bottom 12 (!) all then effectively start again on an even keel? So if there’s no real difference between finishing 9th or 12th in the top division isn’t there a possibility of a lot of meaningless games for the likely bottom teams prior to the split?

An honest question by the way.

  25. John O Neill @ 20.26,

Couldn’t agree with you more in your basic premiss, although I have no time for Salmond and his crew, who have created bad law to try and accomodate a section of society, who will never vote for them. Besides, they claimed to have destroyed material, which shows that that section of society were culpable in attacking the Catholic/Irish minority. That material cannot be utterly destroyed but they choose to ignore that.

  26. Why does a Sheriff bring schools into the equation? He knows the law is wrong, but Timmy is still to blame for Scotland’s ills.
