Bitton deal, here’s an idea, just repay Mikes’ loan

475

Very pleased to hear Nir Bitton has signed a contract until 2020. Five years is an astonishing extension for a player who is clearly heading in the right direction. It gives Celtic assurance that they don’t need to worry about a key player’s contract running down for the foreseeable future.

Nir was the first manifestation of Ronny Deila’s player-improvement work. At the start of last year he was little more than a squad addition, a bit like Leigh Griffiths, but he’s since excelled in domestic and European football, as well as for Israel in the Euro qualifiers.

Let’s see if he can continue to improve.

I note the media going ‘a bit Tonto’ over Sports Direct’s insistence that the Rangers Former Players Benevolent Fund stop using trademarks they own. I know this will make many people swallow hard, but’s be clear, if the Celtic Former Players Association were selling merchandise bearing the Celtic crest the club would be saying “Cease and Desist that right now, Joe”. Same is true if you are a fan selling T-shirts or street vendor selling scarves.

Without making moral judgements, football clubs earn money from licensing their logos, you want to use it, you pay. You don’t pay, the club cannot discriminate between who they pursue and who they don’t, as such discriminatory behaviour would be a legitimate defence in law by a transgressor.

Sports Direct own thousands of logos and brands. They will have a department sweeping for infringements and they don’t strike me as the kind of company who let any slip through without action. I’d be amazed if Mike Ashley, or any senior SD staff, were even aware of the action.  Cease instructions will come out from the legal team without a second thought.

What remains galling to some is the fact that Newco have to take instructions from Sports Direct on use of logos and other IP. This, on top of the whole Fifa 2016 indignity, could be ended by repaying the Sports Direct £5m loan.

Why wouldn’t they stop the embarrassment and just pay Mike his money? He’s not going to cut a new deal, no positive accommodation is ever going to happen, all that lies ahead is more embarrassment, and the risk of Ashley taking genuinely draconic action to recover his loan.  I’m sure they money’s there to repay, right?

  1. You beat me to it Tone.

    Well done Ronny.

You deserve it for managing the club in crisis.

  2. RD is right, all these extra games that other teams don’t have to deal with are mostly forgotten and taken for granted, I honestly can not prais the man high enough, and of course the vision of the board for picking him as our leader, I’v a feeling he will be here for a while, and wish him and the players nothing but the best of luck.

  4. A couple of quick points.

As far as I’m aware there is no petition planned by anyone outside Parkhead on the day of the Green Brigad’s food drive.

At the previous food drive, which took place on the same day as the Celtic Trust were collecting signatures for the Living Wage petition, some of those asking for signatures positioned themselves next to the drop off points for the food drive. This wasn’t pre planned but was done for two simple reasons.

    1) It would be easier for supporters as those who wished to donate food as well as sign the petition could do both without having to stop twice.

    2) It was hoped the petition would receive more signatures as it’s easier to speak with someone when they’ve already stopped.

No hidden agendas just common sense.

Can I also mention that those Celtic employees who started receiving the LW on July 1st are now being paid 40p an hour below it since the recent increase. It’s for this reason that accreditation and commitment to updating is so vital.

Finally, brilliant Ronny, delighted for you on your award.

  5. Ron D-those clowns Regan & Doncaster will currently be in their default position, hiding under their desks on Hampden’s 6th floor, with pencils up the nostrils and hankies on their heads. After the huns died, they said they would take a closer look at Club governance in all leagues, can Sevco see out the season? Could they prove this before the season started? Are they trading insolvent? Are they bringing in players while they are insolvent? That muppet Regan, had the brassneck, to call out Platini for transparency. HH

  6. Stairheedrammy on

So is the BBC report on Big Nir signing a 5 year deal just highlighting their default position that Celtic must always be in a crisis. Biton wanted out of the crisis side is what they wanted to say.

Shame on the club if it ever dares to do so, and eternal shame on those who promote endorse such wicked deceptions. You do it in the name of your children born and yet to be conceived, and your lies will one day become their lies.

And you are gracious with that lie? You can clos your eyes on your starched pillow and sleep with that lie… and call yourself a Celtic Supporter?

    ………………….

Where lesser novelists deploy broad strokes to separate good guy from bad, Graham Greene was the master of the multiple distinction. His characters exist within a meticulously calibrated moral system. They fail by degrees. There is no real way to be good in a Greene novel, there are simply a million ways to be more or less bad.”

The aforementioned comes from a foreword by Zadie Smith in regard to the Greene masterpiece, The Quiet American.

A debate has been raging in the comments section of my previous article in regard to the relative merits of Mike Ashley and Dave King. The latter deserves broad strokes; but questions have been asked in regard to whether cutting the head of the serpent might lead to a greater malaise.

There are a number of anomalies in the letter that purports to be a requisition for a general meeting. There is a consensus that it is a hoax. There are also compelling suggestions that it is a facsimile of the original. The date of the document, the Monday when King crept surreptitiously into Scotland, and its content, could be the rationale for the emergency board meeting. However we also have October’s payroll to consider and proceedings against King for contempt of court. We additionally should consider the impending release of the audited accounts. Tomorrow might be a good day to ‘bury’ these as we are expecting news on the latest HMRC appeal in regard to the EBT However I doubt whether Monsieur Graham has the PR sophistication of his predecessors

Even if it is a fake, it poses a serious question: “What action, if any, the directors took to ensure that Mr King was a suitable, fit and proper person to retain such a post?”

Are Murray and Gilligan less bad? I’m fond of John Gilligan, but I won’t allow my admiration to cloud my judgement. He and Murray are complicit in an enterprise that delivered a criminal as our chairman. They should be held accountable for this, if nothing else. The question is so pertinent that it adds credibility to this document. It is not too much of a stretch to imagine Ashley asking a question that not only targets King, but also questions the board as a whole. We will know in twenty-one days whether it is a leak or a hoax. In the interim Monsieur Graham will cast doubt on it it as this is what he is paid to do.

If this document is a leak, with company numbers redacted, then who would have access to it? I posit that Level 5 would have received a copy of this letter as soon as it was delivered. The motives for a leak could range from outstanding invoices to having their professional pride being impugned by the decision to replace Traynor and Kerr with Graham. As we know, Traynor set up Level 5 to handle Rangers PR affairs. I’m certain that he even swallowed some costs to entice King to trust his affairs to a new company. Graham’s involvement could well be perceived as an act of betrayal by King. If it is a leak, we have a minimum of one smoking gun.

I posit that we had our chance with Ashley, Llambias and Leach and that this ship has sailed. Ashley will be concerned that there is a widespread boycott in place and by King’s malevolent stupidity. The unprecedented decision to requisition an EGM on June 12 to embarrass the board had no effect.Questions were asked by board plants such as Sandy Chugg. I get the impression that Mr Chugg will be indisposed should a general meeting occur in December or January.

Calling an general meeting would be a brilliant tactical move by Ashley. King plans to dilute Ashley’s holding and to carve up the company with a special resolution. A general meeting requisition would seize the agenda from King and postpone matters until after he faces contempt of court charges. It would be difficult to articulate a cogent case for a 75% majority from a prison cell.

In a previous article, A Perfect Storm, I envisaged a number of scenarios that could derail the current regime. I did not factor in the malevolent stupidity of King.

    Very amusing.

However you forgot to add that you decide to reformat the blog, telling everybody its for diversification and to provide much more news and opinion than is currently available, adopting a structure that fails to operate on most normal platforms thereby implementing a divide and conquer strategy where only users with constantly updated systems and software are able to voice their dissent/opinion with anywhere close to ease.

If voices of dissent are heard, then a technical response is sent telling them that its not the blog thats the problem its their phone / computer / isdn connection / etc that is the problem.

And also dont forget the favourite tactic of changing blog / stream etc just before anything controversial happens or looks like happening.

Ehhhhhhhhhhh, aye right, you honestly think Celtic supporters are that daft?

The point was and still is, it’s high jacking a food drive, people went there in good faith to give, not to have a petition stuck in there face and have debate about politics given to them by some left wing crackerjack who won’t take no for an answer, and has an attitude when you say no to them, as is what happened to me on my last donation., I wouldent allow you in the footprint at Celtic Park, stay in Georges Square, wave a flag, and get your face painted, let us support our club and stop annoying us, we’ll me anyway.
