Blackett, Christie and our biggest spend in 14 years

846

Tyler Blackett’s arrival, announced moments before halftime on Saturday, was welcome. He’ll immediately push Izzie, who has had no real competition for the left back berth since arriving at Celtic five years ago – an incredible situation.

The Ryan Christie situation surprised me. Ryan performed well against a Celtic defence in a state of flux earlier this month, as he has done previously against us, but it will certainly a curious signing (this morning Inverness Caledonian Thistle announced they have accepted a bid from Celtic).  More on these two later.

As for rumours that we’re about to spend more money on a player than we have since John Hartson arrived 14 years ago……. Well, that is a change of pace. On top of this business, I’m sure there will be more comings and goings in defence, and elsewhere.  Stay tuned……..

Thanks to everyone who entered the raffle for the Golf Day for four at Aberdour.  Taggsy informed the winner (Gerry) by email this morning.

Aye onything 5 million for DVD is a bonus..

    Nonsense.

By definition the rest of our squad is virtually worthless as he is our most saleable asset by a country mile.

Virgil covers the rest of our defences backside virtually every week. He will be a big loss. 5 million doesn’t even get you a reserve player in England these days.

The article talks about ‘more money on A PLAYER’ than we spent on John Hartson. I believe we spent c. £6m (fee only, not including wages) on big John. Is the implication here that we will spend a fee (not including wages) in excess of £6m on a single player?

Feels like one of those ‘we tried really hard but just missed out’ stories to me.

    Time will tell.

I am not party to all the insights from the CQN corner clique who all met on Saturday.

A quick run down of rumours would also help.

    What squandered opportunity?

We got beaten very marginally ( and controversially) if truth be told, and the law of averages dictated we’d fail.

How would you have prevented a 4-3? if you were Peter Lawell? What would you have said if Stefan Johansen made it 3-0 when he should have? What if the referee had given the hand ball? And sending off? What if we man marked at corners instead of being obstructed playing zonal marking?

The striker vacancy myth doesn’t cut it either, and they don’t exist at £10m never mind double or treble what we’ve been paying since we moved into the slow lane. You only need to look at our attempts, to back that up.

For the reasons why we can’t buy stikers at 5 and 6 million see the direct link to wages. It’s been explained time, and time again on CQN by Celtic fans that know that are not fantasists, and financially astute.

We need to get lucky on a punt in the attacking department, for sure, but in Europe it’s about how you defend especially away from home, as predictably Malmo just about proved, in line with their superior coefficient.

Your squandered opportunity is nearly as poor as your undervaluation of Centre backs, or is it just Celtic and VVD that’s always poor when you post.

I read it the opposite way. “As for rumours that we are about to spend more money on a player than we have since John Hartson arrived 14 years ago.”

The fee for every player we’ve signed since has been less than big John’s fee. Scott Brown is probably the closest?

The implication in this sentence is that there are rumours we will spend more on one player than on big John’s fee.

I retain my right to be highly skeptical.

In my opinion there needs to be reformation of the current board, but my vision for it may well disappoint some.

Peter Lawwell is a very good CEO but he is a certain type of CEO and there are other well known Celtic Fans who would argue that Lawwell does nothing other than carry out the board’s strategy or policy and that he himself is not solely responsible for that policy.

The board has vitually the same make up to it each and every year and that is not right. There should be rotating non executive directors and there should be younger and more entrepreneurial board members who specialise in things such as marketing, e-commerce, property, broadcasting and other specialisms.

At the current time Celtic places an accountant at the head of each and every department more or less, with the mantra being that every department must make a profit.

On the face of it that is sound advice because it is safe, leads to financial stability, fiscal clarity and responsibility and so on.

However, it also means conservative thinking, little risk taking, and very little thinking outside the box as you put it.

If there were a more radical board, then Peter Lawwell may not be the ideal CEO, or alternatively he may be the absolutely perfect CEO because he may well implement any radical plan to the letter but always with an eye on safety, statutory compliance and fiscal prudence.

Equally, it can be argued that no CEO or senior management figure should remain in situ for too long as that leads to stagnant thinking and stiffles a progressive attitude.

A company like Celtic ( customer base, turnover, potential customer base and turnover, potential for market expansion, diversification and so on ) should be rewriting its business plan and vision for the future every three to five years and ,in my opinion, the company will not be best served if successive business plans are drawn up by exactly the same authors time after time.

Celtic PLC is successfully run, year in and year out, in terms of P&L’s, balance sheets and so on but there are areas in which it could and should do better in my opinion.

Over the last couple of years it has improved substantially in the PR and client relations stakes. The general level of pubic communication is far better and enagement with many fans has improved substantially.

However, there are other areas where the club could improve (IMO) and where there are fiscal, social and footballing opportunities which they have not seized.

I am the first to admit that running a football club is a very difficult task and no club will ever please all of the fans all of the time – that is for sure.

Celtic, in the main, is well run in difficult circumstances which are often outwith the boards control – especially where you are part of a common league or association where there are clear conflicts of interest and restrictions on trade activity by agreement.

However, there should be progressive and cyclical change within the PLC structure and possibly a more radical approach in certain business matters whilst always looking after your core function – namely the football on the pitch.

For the avoidance of doubt, I have never agreed with Fergus’ vision of a PLC structure without some form of membership scheme which brings all of the fans into the mix in relation to certain aspects of club management. Shares can be bought, sold, diluted, leveraged, made up of different classes and so on all of which provide a perfectly legal mechanism capable of relegating the ordinary shareholding fan to no more than a bystander or – dare I say it – a spectator.

Regreattably this is what happened when Celtic incorporated into a ltd company and very quickly left Walfrid’s vision of charity and community behind, leaving a limited company being run by a few families for their own gain and financial wellbeing for over 100 years.
