Blackett, Christie and our biggest spend in 14 years

846

Tyler Blackett’s arrival, announced moments before halftime on Saturday, was welcome. He’ll immediately push Izzie, who has had no real competition for the left back berth since arriving at Celtic five years ago – an incredible situation.

The Ryan Christie situation surprised me. Ryan performed well against a Celtic defence in a state of flux earlier this month, as he has done previously against us, but it will certainly a curious signing (this morning Inverness Caledonian Thistle announced they have accepted a bid from Celtic).  More on these two later.

As for rumours that we’re about to spend more money on a player than we have since John Hartson arrived 14 years ago……. Well, that is a change of pace. On top of this business, I’m sure there will be more comings and goings in defence, and elsewhere.  Stay tuned……..

Thanks to everyone who entered the raffle for the Golf Day for four at Aberdour.  Taggsy informed the winner (Gerry) by email this morning.

  1. “He is something special. At training we see he is different class. I do believe there are some similarities with Gareth Bale when he was at Southampton and then he pushed on at Spurs. Who knows what will happen to Ryan Christie? Hopefully he will stay because he is a pleasure to play with and a pleasure to work with.”

Ahh, I get it now, spending the millions that Sky gives you counts as spending, but spending the money you make from selling other players doesn’t count.

Until we remove the current, post sell by dated, Stokes, Mulgrew and Commons, who occupy senior status in the squad, we will remain a backward looking team.

I presume that these players have an influence in the dressing room, due to their seniority, but they are the last remnants of Neil Lennon’s outmoded football model.

They have nothing left to offer a free flowing, athletic team.

Thank you for your services, lads, but tempes has fugited.

  5. So now that BRTH has spoken sense, and maybe left us all with the stark realism of European football, I introduce a wee bit of levity. Well it made me laugh….again.

A slight distraction from the morbid fantasy of the ins and outs at CP.

Replaced by the morbid fantasy of Rangers dying?

Oh, and by the way, in the future you will see a TV sponsored competition between the leading clubs of the MLS and the top flight clubs in Europe as determined by the current system.

Celtic will be allowed nowhere near such a competition no matter who their managers is, who their players are, who the major shareholder is and who sits in the Chief Executives chair.

  7. Statement on Dinamo Zagreb web site (

GNK Dinamo and FC Celtic agreed all the details of the movement of 21-year-old Jozo Simunovic to the ranks of the Scottish giant. There is still a medical examination after which they will, if it goes all right, the young defender will become a member of the Celtic.

Jozo is currently in Scotland. The contract was signed between the clubs and of course it still remains a medical examination before the contract will become valid. As for the details of transfers, we can say that there is a fixed compensation, bonuses and a record percentage in the history of Celtic for any future transfer. We believe in Jozo and Celtic, For us it is impossible that at this point to get an enormous amount of money because the percentage of a next transfer to the English market is important – said executive Dinamo president Zdravko Mamic.

Cooperation between Dinamo and Celtic will not finish on this transfer: Their coaches will come to our football school to educate our young team. Celtic will come to Mladen Ramljak

(This is their youth academy named in memorial to a player who died in an accident many years ago (..https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mladen_Ramljak ).

It will be a close cooperation and it is a lot of elements that influenced to this transfer occurs – said Zdravko Mamic.

Jozo Simunovic came to the first team of Dinamo from our football school, four years ago made his debut for the first team and the favorite club won four league titles, two Cups and one Super Cup. During the last years with the Blue has enrolled 76 matches and scored three goals.

Dinamo him to thank for everything he has done for our club and wish him good luck in his future career.

    ——————————————————–

There have been many calls on here for Celtic to establish a scouting network in the Balkans. This deal looks like we have agreed a feeder system with Dinamo to provide their players with access to England with a high %age of the fee going back to DZ.

On the positive, we will get good talent but only for a while as there will be an understanding that they will move on if they attract an English team.

Although there is some merit in maybe on player like this each season, we could be in a VVD situation every year when the best talent of the previous season is moving on and we have an unsettled team each CL qualifying campaign.

It looks to me that we are now on a 2 prong strategy:

1 Become a Value Added stepping stone to England

2 Build up our own squad of Scottish players as the core of our team.

Will this work or will it cause friction in the long term?

(need to go off now – will look in later)

I freely admit to being a prophet of gloom and doom.

  15. The madness of the EPL Transfer Market:

Monaco paid 3M Euros for Anthony Martial 2 years ago…………

Spurs balked at paying 20M Euros for him 7 weeks ago………….

Monaco gave the player a new contract and Man Utd are paying 50M Euros!

Pity we aren’t down in England – PL would probably have got £20-30M for Pukki and Balde.

  16. BSR – £15m refers to squandered CL opportunity…

For the record Any money above £5m for VVD is a bonus IMO.

The Nantes player, sorry I can’t spell his name, is in the process of signing for Chelsea for an alleged 2.7 million pounds. He’s a centre back.

    Nor would I.

Disillusionment amongst Celtic support might be running deeper than some would care to admit.

  19. Several media outlets are running with a story that Celtic have ‘even’ applied for a work permit for the Croatian defender. Given that he is a citizen of a Member State of the European Union, I did not think a work permit was necessary in this case.

  20. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

I missed out the Nantes player we were meant to be interested in is in the process of signing for Chelsea.

  22. Top class intervention from BRTH – it’s stuff like this and intelligent insght by the likes of Auldheid, Italiabhoy, Ernie and Mr Pastry that keeps the blog relevant, together of course with Paul Brennan’s balanced and thoughtful set-pieces.

Some of the self-indulgent running commentary ‘what kind of washing-up liquid are you buying this week’ drivel and the bile of ‘head in the sand’ Lawwell-haters,and name-callers is better suited to the steamie, or perhaps the Bingo halls of Clydebank.
